This year’s UK Evo motocross series eventually got underway with round 1 at Wickwar in Gloucestershire at the weekend with some 200 plus riders in attendance.
Report and Images by Dave Rich
The event was under strict restrictions due to Covid-19, which unfortunately included no spectators. Water had been put down the day before, and with rain falling overnight and early morning this was to contain the dust early on, but as the track was to dry it was not long before dust appeared.
In the 125 Evo’s it was Ben Milward who took the honours in the opening race with a start to finish win, but there was a real ding dong for second between John May who had returned to racing after an ACL operation last year and Shane Holmes, with Holmes eventually getting pass May mid-race to take second with May a close 3rd. In the second race, there was no stopping Holmes in this one, but again the battle was on for second between May and Milward with Milward eventually taking 2nd from a tired May at the end who was a distant third. In the last race, Holmes took the win again which was to give him the overall with May finishing in 2nd with John Butler taking 3rd in this one with Milward eventually finishing mid-pack after a first lap spill.
In the Evo 250 class, there was no stopping Jamie Skuse who showed his authority in all three races with a dominant display of riding. Former South West Junior Motocross Champion Kurt Brain looked good in the opening race taking second behind Skuse with Brett Hillman clawing his way up through after not the best of starts taking 3rd. Hillman again was to take 2nd in race 2 with Brain who was well down the field after a mistake on the opening lap coming through to take an excellent 3rd. In the last race, Brain was lying in 2nd after the start, but he went down and through came Hillman and James Kensington with Hillman going on to take 2nd behind Skuse, but Kensington was soon put under pressure from Brain who was flying after his earlier mistake and eventually got the better of Kensington with two laps remaining to take 3rd.
The Evo 500 class was to produce some good racing with James Price winning two of the three races with the other win going to Nicky Jones who was to take the overall with Price not having the best of results in race 2 taking 2nd overall and Alex Wallis 3rd overall.
The Super Evo under 45 class saw Welshman Ashley Greedy dominate the proceedings with three convincing wins with Joe Dark making a return to racing taking 2nd Overall with Jordan Carter who worked hard in all three races taking that 3rd overall for his efforts.
The Super Evo over 45 class saw Laurence Wiltshire winning all three races, but there was some close racing behind him between Steve Wells, Shaun Copeman, Simon Dearing, and Max Hendy.
The Vets Over 45’s saw local rider to the track Brian Wheeler show all his experience on his CR500 with his fast gating and style to notch up a hat-trick of wins with Danny Blakeley and Dean Warren having a real scrap in all three races for 2nd and 3rd, but at the end of the day, it was Blakeley who pipped Warren for 2nd Overall.
The under 50 Twinshock 4-Stroke class it was quick with Brad Perrett winning the opening race and James Humphrey winning the second encounter both with a win and a 3rd tied on points, but just two points adrift was George Wolff after taking two second place finishes so it was all on the last race. Humphrey led early on, but a problem saw him pull out and up into the lead went Perrett who went on untroubled to take the win and the overall whereas in the over 50 Twinshock 4-Stroke category it was the 510 Husky of Martin Coleman who took two wins and a second for the overall with Paul Bennett taking the other win and two 2nds for second overall and 3rd Overall went to Roger Brain who was consistent in all three races finishing in 3rd.
In the Twinshock under 50 class, there was a real surprise entry from Lewis Trickett who had been offered to ride a BNH triumph, and he was to get to grips with it pretty well in the opening race winning by over a minute from Richard Benham and James Reeves who were having their own battle behind Trickett. In the second moto, Trickett was leading again until lap 4 when he pulled up with some mechanical problem and his race was over and up into the lead came Ryan Baker who went on to take the win from reeves with Carl Benham taking 3rd. In the last race, Trickett returned, and once he was into a rhythm there was no looking back and just as he did in the opening race won by over a minute from Chris Taylor with Richard Benham 3rd, but it was reeves who finished in 4th and was the most consistent rider in all three races who was to take the overall.
The Twinshock over 50 class saw the 490 Maico of Terry House take a fine hat-trick of wins and the overall with Jim Shand ending the day 2nd overall and Chris Taylor taking 3rd overall.
In the WME Pre 85 Class, there was no stopping Matthew Hitchman who won both races from start to finish, but he was pushed all the way to the Chequered flag in the second race by Sam Russell who took 2nd overall with Jack Chamberlain 3rd overall.
In the Modern 2-Stroke under 50’s class, it was local Gloucestershire rider Luke Dean who was out having a bit of fun on a 250 KTM who was to dominate all three races, and it was much the same in the Over 50’s class with Chris Pritchett taking the overall with three wins.
The next UK EVO race event is on the 29th and 30th August at Ford. For more info go to https://www.facebook.com/ukevomx
