Smout wins the bout! Apico BSMA Nationals Finale – Race Report and Results

The final round of the Apico BSMA national round incorporating the Georgie Evans memorial trophy scheduled to be at Wroxton had to be moved to Brookthorpe due to planning issues.

Report and Images by Ady Cowshall – Images of Speed

With the prospect of some fierce racing ahead and a beautifully prepped track under blue skies, all looked good. With Cohen Jagielski having already wrapped up one national championship the autopilot was in no mood to lose the BSMA crown as he set about continuing his domination of the miniature marvels. For the most part he was, like all season, unchallenged, but for the wildcard ride from Jett Gardiner. Jett was the only rider all weekend to get in front of Jagielski but such is the dominance of the #75 he had soon displaced the spirited challenge of the younger rider. Gardner followed him home in 3 out of the 4 races falling whilst leading the second moto on the first lap and only managing to climb back to 7th. Jamie Currie took second spot in this one with a great battle with Oaklan Winnall, Freddie Gurney, Seth Nichlinson, Tate Vincent, Gardner and Jimmy Whiston all in close combat a mere 12 seconds splitting all seven riders! Winnall had the better of Currie in the first outing but Currie had the upper hand in the remaining races giving him third overall on the day behind Gardiner. Winnall tied on points but was given third due to the scoring system.

The Junior 65cc riders came into the final round with a very small 8 point differential between Ifan Wyn Rees and Sean Smout. Rees went out to increase that points advantage in the first and lead from start to finish but couldn’t shake Smout off as he hounded the championship leader all race long. Smout needed to be in front of Rees and have a rider or two between them to take the championship. He went out and did his part by winning the next three motos but Rees rode way above his years and the pair gapped the rest of the field in the next two heats. Rees then rode a controlled final race to follow wildcard rider Ollie Truman home in third for the final race to clinch the crown. Behind the title chase, William Dennis was sitting pretty in the bronze position only needing a safe weekend to remain on the box. His main competition, Terry Challinor unable to muster enough pace to be a threat. With several wildcard riders in the action pushing both riders down the order. Truman gaining third for the day and Arthur King splitting Dennis and Challinor. A big failure stopped Meghan Williams from a chance of the top six after riding fantastically in her other races.

With numbers down in both the 85 classes, they were run together and with some upsets, at the previous round at Foxhills the championship table had shifted from a three-way title battle to Ben Sullivan’s championship to lose. Both William Murphy and Alfie Crealock-Lovell had received penalties at Foxhills giving Sullivan a huge advantage going into the final few moto’s. Sullivan only needed to score sensible points to bring it home on the top step.

The star of the class went to wildcard rider just back from injury, Freddie Gardiner. Not the quickest out of the blocks but on each occasion, he sliced through the pack to get clean air and take a maximum for the weekend. Equally, Shane Jones, who although registered had only competed in selected rounds went out and destroyed the small wheel field and actually beat all the big wheels apart from Gardiner in the final race. Had he competed in all the rounds he could of taken the SW crown. So with Gardiner taking the glory in the BW the eyes were on Murphy and Crealock-Lovell being able to reel in the points gap on Sullivan. Sullivan went out in the first moto and rode like a champion beating his rivals, Murphy was on his pipe the whole time but couldn’t put a pass on him. Moto two and Sullivan cemented the fact he was the one with the points lead again beating his rivals. This time it was Crealock-Lovell giving chase which in turn kept the battle for silver extremely tight as the pair playing catch up entered the round only 4 points apart. Sullivan continued his championship winning ride by again following Gardiner home in the third and only Crealock-Lovell and Riley Small got in front of him in the class for the final heat. Crealock-Lovell taking second away from Murphy after Murphy DNS the final moto. Reegan Rogers had a healthy points buffer over rival Harry Woodland as they came into Brookthorpe and Rogers was in fine form as he followed Jones home for second in both the first two heats. Woodland was there in third each time but needed roles to be reversed to stand any chance of overhauling Rogers. Gethin Morgan had an outside shot at moving up the championship table but that went out of the window with a DNF in the second race then giving Cameron Meades a shot at Morgan but Meades suffered a similar fate. While Jayci Dix got in on the action and stole points from those fighting for podium pie.

Some of the hardest racing came out of the senior open class between Leon Williams and Harvey James. James didn’t need to beat Williams as he hadn’t competed in all the rounds but pride was on the line and James left nothing in the locker taking an excellent race win in the first. Williams had the machine advantage on the long uphill runs but James had the lighter bike and was able to throw it into the corners, the pair went at it in the next three races with James doing everything he could to get another victory. Williams somehow maintained his composure to take the next three victories with the commentary from Phil Gee really keeping everyone focused on the action on track. Ben Zeale was the best of the rest in the open but he had his hands full at times with wildcard Billy Duke on his Trurace GasGas. Duke was sporting a hand injury but apart from not jumping to his usual height seemed to cope well and took 3 out of the 4 races wins in the 125 class only beaten by Henry Life. Jack Peacey held it all together to maintain his advantage at the top of the championship table with 4 solid rides. Luke Woolgrove had Phill Gee checking his notes when he holeshotted the Apico price race and streaked away out front for 2 laps before Williams and James finally wore him down in lap 3. Had it not been for Jake O’Gorman’s horrific starts on his new Fantic he may well have been further forward than his 4th overall.

The B group adults were missing championship leader Martin Luckwell on Saturday due to family commitments leaving the door wide open for Thor Tucker to close down the points lead. Luckwell was back on Sunday to try to regain lost points and scorched off to a lead Sunday morning with Jamie Hibbard on his rear fender. A few laps in and Luckwell got it all wrong taking himself and Hibbard out handing Tucker the championship. Wildcard Thomas Casbeard took a maximum Tucker doing enough with a 2-4-2-2 to take the title. Dan Crocker battled intensely all weekend on his 250 2 stroke to be in the mix but lost the advantage to the 4 stroke machines on some of the slick surfaces. Ryan Davies got his red rocket out of the gate well on most moto’s and initially battled for podium places before fading down the order.

The A group adults saw Tyrone Cleaver hit the front in the first moto and as they got to the top of the track second-placed Mark Young snapped a chain, rolled all the way to the pits and replaced it going back out a lap down to finish 14th. Cleaver put on an ariel display to come home 30 seconds clear of the pack. The next 2 went Young’s way as he powered his JSR Hondato a convincing second heat win, the third moto was a lot tighter as he only just edged out Adam Collins after both took Cleaver in the last few laps. Cleaver took full advantage of Young’s DNF in the final race as he took another win with Collins closing in fast Josh Greedy had a bike issue in the final race putting him out of a potential third overall giving an easier run for Tommi Davies to take the final podium behind Collins and Cleaver. With injuries hitting several championship leaders this class had been hard to predict an overall winner but keeping the rubber side down was key to success as Nathan Frayne had battled all year with those at the top riding well all season and it paid dividends come crunch time.

The Vets class saw the two class leaders going at it in their usual style, fair but firm racing between the Kawasaki of Darren King and KTM of Jamie Dobson. Each taking class maximums and 2 wins apiece. Behind King in the old-timers class came Bryan Tucker on each occasion moving him up a place in the championship. Steve Hall took advantage of the missing Wildman Willis to move up a place in the table with 4 solid rides but wildcard Russell Groves claimed third on the day ahead of Rob Gittoes. The nippers lead home by Dobson, had Sam Callow making it an easy second place overall despite having to come through the pack on occasion. The battle for third in the championship was fought all the way to the final flag with Ian James riding like he was driving Miss Daisey to be sure of no mistakes holding a 40+ point advantage over Phil Jones, but Jones was all out to try to cut those points down. Alas to no avail as somehow James was never more than 2 places down on him!

The BSMA would like to thank all riders, marshalls, committee members, medical staff and parents for their help and participation in the championship and welcome you to join them at the championship presentation at Worcester rugby club, further details are available from the BSMA office. Championship positions will be posted up very soon.
