Heyman, Watson & Stock on top at Lyng! 2026 MXGB Round 3 – Race Report

On Sunday, the 3rd of May, Norwich Viking MCC hosted round 3 of the Motul ACU British Motocross Championship at Cadders Hill. The 2026 season marks the 100th anniversary of the Norwich Viking MCC, and they were determined to start this landmark year with a bang as the nation’s top domestic championship rolled into Norfolk.

The Morning qualification sessions kicked off proceedings as the 3 championship classes got to grips with the historic Lyng circuit. In the RFX 125cc class it was Thailand born rider Bryan Gyles who took a surprise pole position ahead of championship leader Drew Stock in second. In MX2 it was current points leader Charlie Heyman who took top spot in qualifying group 1, and in group 2 it was Spanish wildcard David Braceras who put his Triumph machine on top of the table. The final qualifying session was the Apico MX1 class, which Conrad Mewse topped ahead of championship rivals Oriol Oliver and Ben Watson.

The 125 class race 1 would see Drew Stock take a start-to-finish race win in dominant fashion ahead of Harley Marczak in second and Bryan Gyles in third. Christopher Brindley came across the line in fourth, and Archie Stapley in fifth.

In Race 2, it was looking like Stock was going to carry on his unbeaten start to the class in 2026 right up until the last corner on the final lap, where Stock came charging up to the finish, being pressured from second-placed Bryan Gyles. The race leader would then fold the front and go down, in turn collecting Gyles as he followed in his wheeltracks. It was then a frantic race for both to get going as they attempted to get back on the machine and across the line. Incredibly, it was Bryan Gyles who managed to cross the line in first ahead of Drew Stock in second after that costly mistake. Archie Stapley finished in third and local star Alfie Geddes-Green in fourth. Harley Marczak came home in fifth.

The overall in the RFX 125 class would go to Drew Stock on 47 points, in second was Bryan Gyles on 45 points and in third was Harley Marczak with 38 points.

The first MX2 race would see Charlie Heyman take the holeshot and lead the race until it was stopped prematurely as the red flag came out with 5 minutes left on the clock. He would take the race victory and certify his championship credentials. In second place was proven Grand Prix rider David Braceras, and in third was Ben Mustoe. Fourth place went to Charlie Richmond after a race-long battle with Billy Askew, who finished in fifth.

In MX2 race 2, it was once again Heyman who exploded out of the gate and set out to complete a perfect afternoon, but he had two teammates charging hard behind him, as Tommy Searle and Billy Askew went bar-to-bar. Heyman, however, was in a class of his own as he controlled the race, and while the gap did close at the end to just 0.442 seconds, he took his second race win of the day ahead of Searle in second and Askew in third. In fourth was Joe Brookes, ahead of Ben Mustoe in fifth.

The MX2 overall would go to Charlie Heyman as he extended his points lead with a full 50 point return. There was a 3 way tie for second spot, but with a better final race score, it was Billy Askew who took the second step of the podium ahead of Ben Mustoe in third.

In the Apico MX1 class, the first race would see all the championship contenders up in the top 5 early on, but it was Conrad Mewse who would dominate the race from start to finish and take the victory. Around halfway through the race, Oriol Oliver fell and would lose second place to Ben Watson as the Brit finished ahead of the Spaniard in the top 3. In fourth was Taylor Hammal and in fifth was Tom Grimshaw.

Race 2 would see an interesting dynamic unfold as Watson and Oliver set off for battle at the sharp end. Mewse was buried outside of the top 10 on the opening lap and left with a lot of work to do. By the end of lap 2 he was already up to fourth place and set into an incredibly smooth rhythm. Watson looked in fine form, however, at the front, and he would take race 2 honours ahead of the consistent Oriol Oliver in second. Although setting the fastest lap of the race, Mewse would have to settle for third place ahead of Hammal again in fourth and Tristan Purdon in fifth.

The MX1 overall went to Ben Watson with 47 points, Mewse in second with 35 points, and Oliver in third with 42 points.

The Norwich Viking MCC would like to thank all club officials, marshals, medics and of course the fantastic support of the spectators, which made the day a successful start in celebrating the club’s 100th year.

A huge thank you to Stebbings Car Superstore, SAGA Truck & VAN, Roger Warnes Transport and MPH Plant Hire for all their support at the NVMCC.

The Next Meeting at Lyng will be on Sunday 7th of June.
