Back in the saddle! Former AMCA Champion Jack Cox made his racing return at Hawkstone!

It was great to see three times AMCA Champion Jack Cox back on a bike and racing on Sunday during round 5 of the AMCA British Motocross Championship at a very wet Hawkstone Park.

Interview, words and Images by Mike Wood

Despite the very challenging conditions, Jack showed that he’s certainly still got plenty of the old style and speed! Here’s what he had to say on his comeback performance.

“I had rode 3 times before the event, deciding on Thursday afternoon to enter the Championship round at Hawkstone. I turned up on Sunday morning in a small van on my own, just using it as another day of practice, walking the track on the morning I thought it was going to be a good day as conditions appeared perfect.

“Getting ready for qualifying the rain started and didn’t really hold off. I was p1 for the first couple of laps of the session and dropped to p3. The rain just poured and poured the track was getting deeper.

“Race 1 I had a bad start, but made some good passes on the first two turns and made the right decisions on line choice, with people getting stuck everywhere. I was sitting in 5th until I hit a swamp and got stuck. I managed to get going again chasing down Jordan Wright and hit another soft patch going straight out the front door heavy nursing it home for 14th!

“Race two was a bit better start in about 8th making some good passes again. Sitting in 5th for a good while, the arm pump brick wall set in, dropping back to 8th for 10th overall .

“After having over 4 years off and 3 to 4 times on the bike leading up to Hawkstone, I was happy with a top ten overall finish. The track conditions were very difficult and hard going, the club and the whole of the AMCA crew did a really good job to keep it all going. Alot of people were moaning about how bad the conditions were and yes the track was very deep and hard, but it’s motocross and once that gate drops it’s the same for everybody. Racing is racing and you have just got to give 100% and do the best you can on the day!”
