Autumn in the hills was mint! 2026 Devon Classic Scramble Club Championship Finale - Race Report

Back on Sunday 11th October, the Devon Classic Scramble Club hosted its final Scramble of 2026 at their Widdy Hills track, Widworthy, Nr Honiton in Devon.

This event incorporated the penultimate round of the 2026 AMCA South West Classic Championship as well as being the final round of the Devon Club’s own Classic Championship. For a change, the weather was on the club’s side, and a lot of effort had gone into the layout of the track, which produced some excellent racing in all classes and was described as very flowing and mint to ride by the riders, with many positive comments at the end of the day.

There was a fair entry of classic competitors who were to attract many enthusiasts, and they were to produce some good classic racing. In the combined Pre 60, Pre 65 and Pre 68 class there was no stopping the 441 BSA Cheney of Nathan Jones in the opening two races, but he was a non-starter in the last race, which was won by Luke Hickie on the 500 Hickie Racing BSA, which gave Luke the Overall.

No 873 NATHAN JONES BATTLING WITH No 16 BOB ROLPH IN THE COMBINED CLASSIC CLASS

In the Pre 74 combined class, which was Under 250 and Over 250cc bikes, it was Martin Farwell on his Cz 380 who took the overall with two wins and a second, only to be denied a clear sweep of wins in the last race by the 360 Yamaha MX of Martin Stephens, whereas in the Pre 78 class there was a hat-trick of wins for the 250 Maico MC of Ian Thomas.

The Twinshock A class was a bit low on entries and, believe it or not, the top six in the Championship were all missing, but there was still some fast and close racing to be seen, especially from the 510 Husqvarna of Marcus Clare, who was in top form and was to take all three race wins by some margin.

ADRIAN DARK TOOK THE OVERALL IN THE TWINSHOCK C CLASS

Twinshock B class saw a fine performance from Steve Folland on his 490 Maico Mega, who dominated all three races with comfortable wins.

In the Twinshock C class, it was the 465 YZ Yamaha of Craig Osmond who led the opening race from the start and raced away and held his nerve at the front to take the chequered flag, much to his enjoyment, to claim his first-ever Twinshock C race win, but it was Adrian Dark on his 490 YZ Yamaha who was triumphant in the other two races to claim the overall.

No 38 CHRIS BROWN DOMINATED ALL THREE TWINSHOCK D RACES

The Twinshock D class was to be dominated by the 250 YZ Yamaha of Chris Brown with a hat-trick of wins, but it was tight for second overall as both Neville Calby and Toby Davies went into the last race tied on points and it went right down to the line, with Davies finishing in fifth with Calby in sixth, which gave Davies second overall by one point.

In the Twinshock E class, it was the KX 250 Kawasaki of Sean Cook who was to take a clean sweep of wins to take the overall and is looking good to take the Championship with one round remaining.

NICK PHILLIPS WAS IN FINE FORM IN THE EVO A CLASS AND TOOK A HATTRICK OF WINS

For the first time in several years, there was Evo racing at this venue, where there was a combined class of Evo A & B, and it was fast and furious straight from the off and in the mix in the A class was one of, if not the top, female Evo riders in the country, Tanisha Thomas. The opening race saw a battle at the front for the holeshot between the big 500 Cr Honda of James Teenan and Thomas on her Cr 250 Honda, but within half a lap it was Nick Phillips also on a Cr 250 Honda who led and was soon to ease away at the front to take the win and Phillips was also triumphant in the other two races to take the overall in the A class and after some really close racing between Teenan and Carl Luke on his 125 Cr Honda it was Teenan who took second overall by two points from Luke.

In the Evo B class, it was the Cr 250 Honda of Marcus McDine who was victorious in the opening two races and looked set to make it a hat-trick of wins, but fellow Cr 250 rider Richard Tapscott put an end to that and took the win in the last race, but McDine took a well-deserved overall.
