With the track build complete thanks to the generosity and skill of BNH Plant hire along with the required preparation and organisation done that meant it was now time to go racing at the 2026 Weymouth Beach motocross promoted by the Purbeck MXC in conjunction with the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club.
Race Report and Images by Mike Wood
But wait, there was a late announcement of a real sand stormer arriving from France and gracing this beautiful Dorset resort; yes, it was none other than Todd Kellett, three-time World sand racing champion and seven-time Weston Beach race winner. Travelling over with Todd was also his Motoblouz Honda Motul SR teammate Adrien Petit. Naturally, following this surprise appearance of Kellett, most people at the Weymouth bash expected the star rider would now go on to bag the Weymouth win in what was shaping up to be a quality Experts class. However, it didn’t run quite to plan for Kellett, and so it was instead 21-year-old Petit who would take the top slot at Weymouth, with other victors on the day being Connor Williams (Juniors), Brett Rowland (Seniors) and Jim Davies (Vets Over 40s).

Sponsored by Dirt Worx, let’s start with that stacked, high-quality Experts and almost on script it was Todd Kellett who led the moto one charge, followed by the 2025 Weymouth winner Shane Carless, Dan Thornhill, James Bates, Leon Williams and Petit. However, before the completion of two laps, there was to be a result-defining moment as leader Kellett came to a halt after his Honda machine had snapped a chain. As Todd frantically pushed his bike back to the start area, Carless took over the leadership for a couple of circuits before that fast, talented French lad Petit, on his Weymouth debut, soared to the front.

From here onwards the classy youngster controlled all the way to the chequered flag as Dan Thornhill edged out FUS Marsh ace Carless for 2nd following a super tussle. Finding himself right down in 18th place early on, Charlie Putman produced a great ride to get home in 4th ahead of Brad Thornhill, Lewis Pyne, Lee Truman, Jacob Bowden, Syd Putman and Leon Williams. Earlier in the moto, ACU Motul 125cc British Champion Drew Stock aboard a 250F JK Yamaha had been simply storming up through the pack in style, getting right up to 10th before unfortunately disappearing from proceedings with four laps remaining. After his earlier chain break, Kellett did manage to rejoin proceedings and putting in some quick determined laps he still got home in 29th place all be it four laps behind his teammate Petit.

Following that massive opening moto disappointment, Kellett did make amends in the second Experts clash with a performance of pure sand racing masterclass. Leading it all the way, he got home a truly incredible 42 seconds ahead of his rivals! In that one, Charlie Putman, Carless and finally Petit all took turns to hold 2nd spot. Starting down in 10th, Chambers Racing KTM pilot Dan Thornhill had another super ride to get home in 3rd with Carless 4th. Once again, the Putman brothers were great entertainment and also right in the mix, with Charlie taking 5th and Syd 6th. Backing up their impressive performances in moto one, this time around Pyne was 7th, Truman 8th, Bowden 9th, Jordan Wright 10th, Williams 12th and Brad Thornhill 13th.

Weymouth 2026 certainly proved to be an intriguing affair and a worthwhile warm-up for Kellett, Petit and Thornhill contesting this coming weekend’s opening round of the French National Sand Racing series, whilst Carless will be going for glory at the big Weston Beach Blast.

In the Seniors class sponsored by Wright Racing, Finn Eady led the opening seven laps of moto one before Brett Rowland came through to snatch the win. Holding 5th early on, Rowland passed Jamie Maller, Craig Roper and Ted Thompson before getting the better of Eady. In the final top ten of this opening bash, Roper was 3rd, Thompson 4th, Jack Hooper 5th, Jason Williams 6th, Joshua Kirby 7th, Harvey Sambridge 8th, Maller 9th and Bradley Hicks 10th.

Seniors moto two and all of the above-named riders were right in the mix again, as this time Rowland led it all the way from start to finish and in some style! At the chequered flag he was 26 seconds clear of Eady, with Roper 3rd and Thompson 4th, thus repeating their moto one positions.

The Weymouth Juniors class again attracted a massive entry of over 100 riders, but in a contest sponsored by Caroline Racing it was to be Connor Williams making his beach racing debut who took the opening moto win. Unfortunately, this moto was red-flagged early on and not rerun due to an injured rider requiring medical attention. In this short moto, Harry Titcombe, Jason Breckon, Flyn George, Arron Saunders, Jamie Wray, Lee Veale, Tyler Lane, Matthew Triggs and Hayden Hamlin were next up.

In the second Juniors moto, which did run its full course, Williams was at it again, leading from start to finish and completing seven laps, a total matched by Titcombe, Jamie Goddard and Flyn George. This Juniors class also included young British speedway star Anders Rowe, who was born and bred in Weymouth. Making his beach race debut, Anders posted 30th and 13th positions for 17th overall.

Having won at Weymouth in 2024 and finished runner-up in 2025, Jim Davies returned to winning ways in the 2026 Vet’s Over 40’s class. In a class sponsored by Andy Hobbs, the Beach race Gorilla, Simon Lane led early on in what was incredibly his Weymouth debut despite having enjoyed a long and illustrious AMCA racing career! Simon’s lead was, though, to be short-lived as first his brother James Lane, then Jim Davies, passed him. Three laps in and Davies was now at the front, but with rain falling, he was made to work very hard for his eventual victory after a super moto long tussle with James Lane. Getting home 4th in this one was Richard Collins, with Chris Toulson 5th and James Holt 6th. In the second Vet’s moto, which was combined into the Experts class, Davies was the leading Vet all the way from James Lane, Simon Lane, Collins, Holt and Toulson.

So that’s Weymouth 2026 done, following another great promotion by the Purbeck MXC, who would like to say a massive thank you to all of their sponsors and supporters. Although not yet confirmed, early figures suggest that Purbeck will be presenting a cheque for £1,800 to the Weymouth and Portland Lions club, whilst £1,200 goes to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance with proceeds from the event. The date for 2027 has also been set, and it’s the weekend of October 16th/17th.
