Peacey rules at Wroxton! BSMA Champion of Champions – Race Report and Results

What a way to kick off the 2020 season, with nearly 300 riders chomping at the bit to see who had stayed in shape over the lockdown; the super popular Wroxton circuit hosted the BSMA Champion of Champions event.

Report and Images by Ady Cowshall – Images of Speed

Strong fields in all the classes despite numerous other events taking place on the same weekend must have shocked those thinking they were going to be able to ease back into racing. Saturday saw some strong winds affecting a few of the jumps with Sunday getting a freak 5 min deluge during one of the latter races putting a whole new spin (literally) on the last few races.

Mx1 kicked it all off with an instant three-rider breakaway, with Seb Berthialime getting the better of the rest. Jack Timms and Tyrone Cleaver went with him, and both soon overhauled him eventually finishing 3rd with Timms looking very smooth he pulled a safe 3-second cushion to hold off Cleaver. Bradley Flagg held a solid 4th being closed down by a charging Harry Linton with enduro specialist Carl Jones  having a good run in 6th

Race 2 saw Timms hit the front early and hold off the charging Linton who set the fastest lap in his efforts to catch Timms. Cleaver fought for a while but lost the tow and came in a comfortable 3rd some distance ahead of 4th placed Flagg. Behind him, David Kip Herring was followed by a trio of hard pushing riders, including Joe Seedhouse just ahead of an epic dice between Jones and the dogged Glen Phillips returning to action. The battle was only decided by a lunge down the inside, nearly taking both riders through the fence as Jones got the better of his fellow Welshman.

The final race on Saturday saw Timms claim a hat-trick, followed home by the same pair. Herring managed 4th this time with Nathan Frayin making his first top 5 appearance of the weekend and Harry Bradley, whose shocking starts had held him back, but this time managed to climb up to 7th in front of Seedhouse and then young Jason Down breaking into the top 10 just up from the youth class.
Sunday saw Timms start where he’d left off taking his 4th win, but Cleaver scorched away with a flag to flag victory in the final race, but with Timms, in second he had the overall from Cleaver and Linton’s first race had demoted him to the 3rd step.

MX2 was again a three-rider breakaway with Adam Harris on the 250 2 stroke pulling the holeshot and pulling away slightly to about a 5-second advantage. By the time Rob Yates had managed to deal with Aiden Williams on the two-stroke, these three had pulled out a huge gap on the rest of the field. Yates set about clawing back the gap on Harris, and within a few laps, his pace had carried him onto the rear wheel. Harris was pushing hard and had to let up somewhat after damaging a radiator on the top of an inside rut letting Yates off the hook and onto a comfortable win.

The second encounter saw Harris out on the unfamiliar 250f and asked which was quicker he surprisingly replied the four-stroke as it was quicker in the new tighter loopbacks of the lower part of the track. Yates was pushing hard to put his mark on the race and dumped it allowing Harris and Williams breathing space, but he remounted and pushing hard he then stalled giving Harris the win from an impressive ride from Williams. Further back the race was alive with Josh Broadway, Lewis Osullivan, Archie Hicks and Ryan Mundell all giving their all.

Yates really put the hammer down to smash the field in the 3rd race. Harris and Williams battled all race long with Harris taking the advantage and some 30 seconds adrift came the rest with Broadway again in 4th, Mundell and Jake Ford not too distant behind.
Yates made no more mistakes for the weekend and came out all guns blazing on Sunday to sweep both races, Williams demoted Harris for one of the final races, but that wasn’t enough to oust the Ferris and  Culverwell rider from 2nd overall. Osullivan’s 3rd race incident dropped him outside the top 5 overall with 4th and 5th going to Broadway and Mundell.

Auto domination was achieved by Casey Lister, who was hard pushed at times by Riley Ray Barrow but a perfect score sheet was recorded. Barrow bridesmaid each time out was always close enough to capitalise on any mistake that Lister might have made. Behind that pair, Tommy Perfect was looking good for a monopoly of third-placed finishes, but he got out of bed the wrong side on Sunday allowing Cohan Jagielski to take Sundays two 3rd places and although 10 points behind in 4th overall had his 3rd race gone to plan it would have been very tight for that final podium spot. Consistency was the name of the game for these little racers on such a demanding track, with ruts up to their helmets in places meant keeping it upright was so important. The track was so fast for these little guys, who were absolutely on the stop down the straights. The same could have been said for 5th placed Jamie Currie, and had it not been for one poor result he too could have been fighting for that final podium step. William Dennis secured 6th overall with a great 2nd outing being the difference over Max Beard.

All these little pilots did an amazing job getting round the full circuit and a shout out to the three young mums out on the furthest part of the course in the final auto race picking up stricken riders no matter whose child it was.

The Junior 65 riders put on a great show of talent with some great battles along the way. Race 1 saw a Mike Alessi style dash to the front by the #800 of Robbie Daley. Jenson Severn went with him, and the pair pulled out a good gap. Daley smashed out his quickest lap on the 4th lap giving him a comfortable lead at the flag over Severn. Behind them, Ollie Waters was dicing with Joe Winstanley-Dawson the pair crossing the line separated by a knobbly going in Waters favour. As the next race unfolded, it was again Daley who was to take another comfortable win from this time Winstanley and a very distance Severn in 3rd with Bailey Williams pushing Waters back to 5th. Daley lost an otherwise polished performance to Winstanley in the 3rd block by the narrowest of margins. Come Sunday the scene was set. All Daley needed was to finish both races inside the top 3, but he went for the jugular and took both race wins, leaving the rest to pick up the pieces. Winstanley had now established a hold over the second step, and it was down to the battling pair of Waters and Severn to see who could do enough to secure the final step. Both riders took a 3rd from those last two outings, but it was the backing up with a 4th over a 6th for Severn that got him the nod. Some consistent riding from Chase Penter put him in 6th behind Bailey Williams.

Small wheel 85 saw a maximum for Kevin Kelly. Kelly was quick out of the gate and with fast lap times, it all added up to domination. However, Chester Hyde did, at times, get close and pushed him hard. Still, Sunday despite going down while in front coming out of the 4th corner on lap one he remounted to charge back up to 2nd within a few laps somewhat a distance behind Hyde, then Hyde succumbed to the pressure and himself went down gifting the maximum to Kelly. Apart from the first race where Riley Ingram stayed in touch, those pair were in a class of their own. Ingram got the better of Hyde’s final race mishap to score a 2nd with Danny Webster also pushing him down to 4th, Webster getting beat by Riley Small first time out made amends from there on out to finish in front of Small giving him 4th overall over Small in 5th.

The Big-wheeled 85 class was intense to watch, although on paper it was a big point advantage for the overall winner with 4 out of 5 race wins it was at times the best racing to watch. Jack Peacey took the well deserved overall top step with a fine display of riding, but the points gap was only as big as it was due to Luke Richards and Ben Casey both scoring a 7th place apiece. Peacey was only beaten in the final race in the slippery conditions by Casey who got out front early and put the hammer down never to be caught. Richards followed him home less than 6 seconds down at the flag but Peacey’s safe ride for third over a minute in front of 4th place was more than enough to lay claim to the title. Casey’s last race win was what was needed to secure the second step, 2 points in front of Richards with progressively better results throughout the weekend over Connor Howells, giving him a 3 point advantage over the GasGas mounted (ok it was only graphics) Seth Manners.

The Senior’s as usual split was by engine size and saw the 125’s putting in the fastest lap times overall until the rain in the final block when Dan Maule set the quickest time on the 250f. It was all about Ben Zeale and Bayliss Utting on the pre-mix machines each taking a win followed by a second going into the final race with two wins apiece and tied on points. It could have gone either way in the slippery conditions, but it went to Zeale with an 8-second margin of victory, with Utting disappointed to finish runner up.  Maule got gifted the overall after a first race DNF by Jamie Wilson left him high and dry, and despite winning the next four races in class, he couldn’t claw back the deficit. Maule took the overall but only by 1 point over Connor Jago after Maule’s 7th placed second race. The final 250f podium went to Charlie Sellick on his immaculate machine with the remaining top 5 places tightly contested between the Jacks, Loveridge and Milstead. The 125 top two only split by 2 points had a large gap back to Dylan Williams on the last step with Josh Young and William Hyett rounding out the top 5.

Another split class which had some exciting battles between the classes was the older competitors, who tried to keep pace with their younger counterparts, and was the vets split between 35 and 45 plus. Youngster Jamie Dobson battled with old-timer Darren King for much of the weekend with nothing but pride to win, due to them being in separate classes but it was pure entertainment for the spectators to watch. Age, as in most cases, won the bragging rights, as to be expected when its to do with fitness. With Dobson pretty much unchallenged by any of the other over 35’s it was inevitable the top step was his. Sam Callow put in an unchallenged ride to take the runner up spot with Chris Seldon enjoying the two-stroke machine while struggling to hold on at times for third. The over 45’s saw another 5 out of 5 for King, with Paul Wildman Willis and Chris Brown scrapping it out for the other steps.
