Hall has a ball at Landrake as Kullas crowned MX1 champ! Michelin MX Nationals Round 4 – Race Report & Results

The Landrake circuit down in Cornwall threw up plenty of drama at the weekend as the Michelin MX Nationals hosted the fourth and penultimate round of their 2021 Championship.

Local racer Josh Gilbert on his Par Homes Husqvarna went quickest in the Fastest 40 qualifying and this feat was matched in MX2 by his teammate Florian Miot.

In the Fastest 40 moto one Crendon Fastrack Honda’s Tommy Searle, Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha racer Harri Kullas and Apico Husqvarna’s Stu Edmonds surfaced as the lead trio, but Kullas was in a determined mood and with three laps to go he would move to the front to take a fantastic victory over Searle with Edmonds keeping up the pace to round out the race in third. Gilbert would have a race to forget, crashing out early in the moto when on the attack.

The fight for MX2 glory was well and truly on, and emerging with the early lead was Rob Hooper Racing Yamaha’s Lewis Hall, but a slip by him saw his teammate Sam Nunn taste fresh air for the first time and looking comfortable at the front, although the chasing pack of Crendon Fastrack Honda’s Jay Hague, fastest qualifier Miot, Hall and the Chambers Racing Husqvarna of Tom Grimshaw were keeping the pressure on. The pressure took its toll on Nunn who would crash out hard and DNF the moto.  Taking advantage of Nunn’s misfortune was Hague who would take the chequers ahead of Hall and Grimshaw with Miot also having a DNF on the final lap.

With the absence of MX1 title contender Todd Kellett, all eyes on the second Fastest 40 moto would be on Kullas who by finishing ahead of Searle would nail the title with a round to go.  The master of smooth Kullas got his nose in front early ahead of the Par Homes Husqvarna of Evgeny Bobrychev and all looked to be plain sailing but a late surge by Searle kept everyone on their toes but in the end, it was Kullas who took the chequers and with it the 2021 title.  Huge congrats to Harri and the Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha team.  So on the day, it was Kullas with the overall followed by Searle, Bobrychev, Dylan Walsh in fourth, Edmonds fifth and Elliot Banks-Browne with his best result of the year in sixth.

Making up for his first Moto DNF, Miot banged in the moto two win and by Hall following him home, and his teammate Nunn getting the better of Hague it would be an overall victory for the RHR rider with his first-ever Pro Overall.  Behind Hall, it would be Hague and Grimshaw joining him on the box in second and third with Jamie Wainwright fourth, Carlton Husband fifth and Jamie Law sixth. It would be a weekend to forget for series leader John Adamson which means it is all to race for between him and Husband for the title at Cusses this weekend coming.

In the Expert MX1 class, clear series leader Ben Edwards was eclipsed by the locals with Joe Clayton and Josh Taylor fighting it out for South West glory with Clayton taking the spoils by taking the chequers on three occasions to Taylors ones. Edwards kept his title credentials well and truly intact with one round to go by finishing third.

ASA United Gas Gas’s Bobby Bruce railed his 125 to a full set of moto wins which has seen him leapfrog four of his rivals to top the standings with just Cusses Gorse to go.  Gareth Padgett put in a solid shift for second overall edging out Tom Murphy who was third and title contender Jake Preston fourth.  Spare a thought for another local racer Louie Kessell who was looking good for a podium spot, but a mechanical issue in the first moto on Sunday saw him suffer a DNF and out of the running for a place on the box.

It was better late than never for Aidan Mcdonough in Amateur MX1. The Irish racer was due to compete in the full series this year but Covid got in the way of that and at Landrake he showed what we have been missing by racking up three moto victories and a third to take the overall. Behind Mcdonough, Sean Wainwright kept his title fight on course claiming the chequers in the last moto and second overall.  The final podium spot went the way of Round three winner Harry Bradley with Callum Gordon sneaking ahead of his series podium rival Brad Thornhill for fourth.

Aaron Ongley, Dan Brough and Sean Springer put on a great show in Amateur MX2 with these three trading places in each moto, but it was Ongley who took the honours one point clear of Brough with Springer three points further back. Springer heads into this weekends finale with a 15 point lead over Brough, but with 100 points up for grabs over the weekend the title is far from decided.

In Clubman MX1 Alex Christopher upped his game when it was needed and broke the Ivan Kerr stranglehold at the head of the championship standings. Christopher was in a dominant mood and for the first time took maximum points from the weekend and the overall. Kerr was solid again but now needs to pull something special out of the bag at Cusses as he trails Christopher by 25 points. Billy Saunders had a great weekend and kept Sam Morcom at bay for the final space on the box.

The weekend was a complete disaster for Clubman MX2 championship leader Guy Prince who snapped his ACL in the first moto. We wish Guy a speedy recovery. Wildcard George Boyce impressed putting in four consistently strong motos to bag the overall over moto one winner Bradley Taylor who had his season-best result with third.  Ben Wainwright now is in the Championship driving seat going into Cusses.

SJP Moto KTM’s Charlie Heyman showed his talent by reeling off four sensational race victories to notch the number one spot ahead of the hard-charging Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha of Joe Brookes. The winner last time out Jak Taylor backed up that performance with third. If Heyman can keep his cool at Cusses he will be able to make it back to back MX Nationals titles after winning the Big Wheel 85’s last year.

Another of West Country’s finest Tyler Westcott produced a fantastic performance in the MXY2 class and grabbed a well deserved overall victory over series leader Alfie Jones. Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki’s Sam Atkinson edged out Jude Morris for the final podium spot.

The racing in the Big Wheel 85’s was fantastic but coming away with the victory was Ben Mustoe who went 1-3-1-3. GRT Holeshot KTM’s Wildcard Finley Evans finished second but it could have been one step higher, but he went too hard too early on Sunday and crashed out giving himself a mammoth job to do. Tyla Hooley was superfast too but his starts let him down but he certainly knows how to make moves through the pack. Billy Askew was fourth but has now seen his series lead halved by Mustoe to just 16 points and with Hooley also within striking distance, we are set for a fantastic finale between these three.

Cole McCullough continued to be a class act on his GRT Holeshot KTM and maxed out in the Small Wheel 85’s extending his lead by another 35 points which will give him breathing space at Cusses. Drew Stock and Gus Mustoe duked it out for the number two spot with Stock getting the better of his rival with stronger Sunday motos.

So all eyes will be on Cusses Gorse this weekend as the Michelin MX Nationals host both their season finale and their epic Straight Rhythm. Sunday’s action will again be live-streamed for free on the Dirt Hub Facebook page. For ticket, info go to https://www.mxnationals.co.uk/
