Kellett kills it at Hawkstone! 2021 Michelin MX Nationals Round 2 – Report and Results

Hawkstone Park in Shropshire was the host venue for the second round of the 2021 Michelin MX Nationals at the weekend and as always the historic track served up some great racing throughout the classes.

With the unfortunate date clash situation meaning some racers were missing on Saturday, some new heroes emerged which has seen the championship standings blown wide open in a few classes meaning that everyone will need to bring their A game to the remaining rounds.

Fresh back from injury Martin Barr was lightning-fast from the trap in Saturdays mixed Pro/Expert MX1 moto’s and he couldn’t be caught going 1-1 with veteran Tony Craig second in moto one ahead of Gav Stevenson and Todd Kellett.  Kellett would finish second in Saturdays second moto ahead of Craig and Stevenson but it was Sunday when Kellett really came to life on his Yamaha France Machine, upping his game to beat big guns Shaun Simpson, Harri Kullas, Tommy Searle and Barr in moto one.

Simpson showed his sand prowess in moto two and kept the chasing Kullas at bay with Searle third, Kellet fourth and Jake Millward fifth.

When the points were totalled though it was Kellett who took the overall from Barr and Stevenson with Kellett now leading the Championship with a 12 point advantage over Kullas.

The Pro MX2 class was down to three racers on Saturday and of the three Nathan Dixon had the speed and churned out two race wins from Jamie Wainwright and Carlton Husband who was nursing a nasty shoulder injury.

The racing moved up a notch on Sunday with some great action in MX2 which saw Jamie Carpenter claim his first-ever Pro motocross race victory after fending off the advances of the hard-charging Lewis Hall who finished second. Veteran Jamie Law would finish third with Tom Grimshaw fourth and Brad Anderson fifth.

In an eventful moto two it was Hall who pulled clear early on in the moto with Carpenter pinned to the back, but a mechanical failure for Hall saw the evergreen Anderson claim the moto victory ahead of Carpenter, Law, Grimshaw and John Adamson.

The weekend podium though saw Dixon on the top step over Wainwright and Husband with the latter now topping the standings from Dixon and Carpenter.

Ben Edwards was the master of the Expert MX1’s racking up four moto wins methodically make his way to the front in each race for a well deserved overall victory to back up his round one success.  George Sim-Mutch was the most consistent of the next batch of racers and attacked the track all weekend long earning second on the box with Richard Bird third.

Team Green Kawasaki’s Cullen Scott came of age in the Expert MX2 category going through the card to make it a memorable weekend for the young racer who now tops the championship by 12 points over Jake Preston. Talking of Preston he would end the weekend with second while Ollie Beamish was third. ASA United Gas Gas’s Tom Murphy looked a solid podium contender but a fall and a DNF in the first moto on Sunday pinned him down to fourth.

The racing in the Amateur classes is always eventful and you cannot keep your eyes off it for a second. Sean Wainwright continued his form from Fatcat, taking the chequers three times to steal the honours ahead of John Kirk who got his head down in the final race to win the last moto. The third and final podium spot could have gone to any number of contenders but it was David Rushton who had the strongest set of point-scoring rides and deserved his place on the box.

Dan Brough’s return to the series has been a fruitful one and he maxed out in Amateur MX2, keeping round 1 winner Sean Springer behind him with Charlie Hamlet third. Springer still tops the championship standings but he only has a slender 8 point lead over Brough so round three will be interesting between these two.

The Alex Christopher/Ivan Kerr battled raged on in Clubman MX1 with Charlie Green also throwing himself in the mix but with two moto wins to the others one apiece it was Christopher who would grab the overall from Kerr and Green, with Christopher now seven points up on Kerr in the standings.

Elliot Pugh and Guy Prince went head to head for Clubman MX2 glory with Pugh the king of Saturday with both victories with Prince hammering home the same feat on Sunday with a pair of wins. At the end of the weekend though Pugh would be on top followed by Prince and Jamie Mottram with round one winner Ben Wainwright in fourth.  It’s as tight as you can get it in the standings now with Pugh and Wainwright tied in the lead on 158 points with Prince just one point further back on 157. Roll on round three.

In the MXY2 125’s 2020 Big Wheel 85 champ Charlie Heyman reeled off two victories on Saturday while Bailey Johnson bared his teeth on Sunday taking the chequers in both moto’s. With a solid weekend though it was Heyman who stole the glory ahead of Raife Broadley and George Hopkins, with Heyman now leading the championship charge but with just a 7 point lead over Johnson.

Round 1’s top two MXY2 250′ riders Alfie Jones and Jude Morris were absent on Saturday which paved the way for Ben Clark to up his game and notch up two wins. The aforementioned Jones and Morris shared the race spoils on Sunday, but when it came to the podium Clark would stand on the top step flanked by Luca Pegg in second and Lewis Glynn third.  At the head of the championship chase, Clark is in pole position with Jones seven points further back.

On Saturday Josh Vail and Harrison Greenough went at it for Big Wheel 85 glory with a win each but a big crash on Sunday for Greenough classed him out of contention for the weekend overall that went the way of Vail. The big guns of Wal Beaney, Billy Askew and Tyla Hooley showed up on Sunday and would finish in that order in both moto’s. On the box though Vail was joined by Jack Fletcher and Lennox Dickinson who both had great weekends. Vail now controls the series being five points ahead of Askew.

Chester Hyde came to the podium party armed with a double dose of Saturday moto wins and two solid race results on Sunday to claim a notable victory for the youngster. Hyde was joined on the box by Hayden Statt and Lewis Spratt who kept Sunday chargers Cole McCullough, Drew Stock and Freddie Gardiner off of the podium. McCullough, who took the chequers in both Sunday moto’s sits at the top of the table after two rounds, 8 clear of Hyde.
