Ryan runs riot at Haverigg! 2021 Acerbis Amateur Nationals – Race Report & Results

With the great British summer heating up, a weekend away at the beach sounded like a plan and why not throw a couple of days racing in while we are at it, that’s exactly what Darren and his Acerbis Nationals crew did for round two and did it deliver. Haverigg was the venue and the track provided some excellent nail-biting racing that was hotter than the weather.

First up on the perfectly prepared circuit were the Moto Connection 125 machines with series leader Matt Ridgway a no show it was left to Stu Owen and Liam Gale who were tied on points to take the reins of the class. However, they both had to play second fiddle to wildcard Rob Clitheroe who was the most consistent on his Yamaha and took the overall honours just two points ahead of Gale who bagged himself a pair of wins on day two which will definitely help his championship cause. Stu Owen stood on the lower step of the rostrum just another couple of points back from his championship rival while another wildcard Charlie Irwin was in hot pursuit finishing fourth overall and also stole a win while he was at it. Holeshot awards were dished out for the fifth block of racing and Liam Gale was the man to claim the 125 class prize.

Lewis Petfield

In the California MX Dreams 250 Open 2 stroke category, championship leader James Dent came to Haverigg full of confidence after his Hawkstone win but made things hard work for himself after some start crashes and first lap carnage. It was a last race charge from behind and last corner pass which gave him the overall victory on home turf with a 3-1-2-3-1 scorecard and extended his lead by a couple of points over closest rival Adam Harris, who put his Fantic on the box for the runner up position along with the final moto holeshot award. Drew Roe took a moto win on his way to third overall for the weekend and Chris Nuttall also claimed the moto 4 victory to boost him up in the overall rankings.

Danny Tollet

It was business as usual for Brian Wheeler in the Roberts Plant Engineers Vets Over 50 category as he went on to dominate the weekend with 5 moto wins from 5 starts and the holeshot award to put the icing on the cake. Paul Wildman was best of the rest on his little 125 Yamaha and managed to fend off 2019 champ Chris Brown for the runner up position. Brown managed to claim a couple of runner up places over the weekend but a fifth in the third outing cost him points and so had to settle for the lower step of the rostrum this time around. James Whitlow and Rob Lewis fought hard all weekend to round out the top 5.

Brian Wheeler

Ryan Voase was the man on form in the LS2 helmets Vets Over 40 category as he carried on his winning streak from Hawkstone bagging himself a maximum 200 points haul extending his series lead handsomely over closest challenger Danny Tollett. Tollett had to worry more about fending off the attentions of local man Richard Miller however as the pair battled all weekend long for the runner up spot in each of the motos. Tollett ended up coming out on top by the end of play Sunday as Miller struggled with the rougher conditions on both days meaning he had to settle for third while Lee Martin and Barry Gray rounded off the prize money placings by finishing fourth and fifth respectively with Gray picking up the holeshot prize too for his efforts.

250 & Ladies start

In the Pro Green sponsored Ladies category it was all about who could stay most consistent and keep it on two wheels which Elaine MacEachern proved brilliantly as she only took one moto win all weekend. She backed that up with a pair of seconds and a pair of thirds giving her the overall by just two points over Amie Goodlad who amazingly never took a chequered flag for her efforts over the weekend. Hawkstone winner Kathryn Booth took two wins but first corner crashes put pay to her overall chances and she came up just four points short. Grace Richards was the victor in the other two motos which helped boost her up to fourth position after a tough weekends racing. Kady Moore managed to claim the holeshot prize from race five on her Husqvarna.

Elaine MacEachern

The Manchester Xtreme Junior Open class provided the spectators with some interesting racing as Alfie Calvert paced himself nicely in the rough conditions to come from behind and pick the pace up at the halfway mark taking control of each race for maximum points over the weekend making him the second rider to have a 100% win streak going to round three. Wildcard rider and fast starting Tayla Smith made it hard work for Calvert but had to settle for a stack of runner up positions and second spot on the rostrum along with his holeshot award from the final encounter. Ryan Davis finished the weekend in third even after a disaster in the third race and Lewis Davison took home fourth.

Seb Berthiaume

In the Craigs Motorcycles MX2 category it was all square after round one between Mitchell Meadows and Marshall Smith at the top of the standings and they fought for honours once again at Haverigg. Smith managed to bag the honours for the weekend with a 3-2-1-2-1 result sheet and consolidated himself as sole leader going to Wroxton with Meadows hot on his heels. The 372 KTM man claimed the moto four victory helping himself upto second for the weekends overall result heating up the series and its starting to look like a 2 man show so far. Lee Sealey finished runner up in the last race on Sunday giving him the nod in the tie break over wildcard Braydon Ferguson who looked to be the man to beat after his two wins on Saturday but a couple of crashes meant he had to settle for fourth overall in the end. Marshall Smith came away with the holeshot prize.

Mark Sutherland

The top five at Haverigg were the same as at Hawkstone just mixed up a bit in the Paradise MX Holidays MX1 class but the winner remained the same as James Hutchinson came to his most local round of the series, hailing from the North East, and took a fine overall victory claiming three wins and two second places along with a first turn crash to makes things a bit harder work than they already were proving he has a slight edge so far in 2021. Lee Harrison won the opening race of the weekend and finished runner up after all was said and done while former champ Ed Briscoe took the remaining race victory which helped him to third on the box. Irishman Scott Hamilton salvaged his overall by claiming a tenth in race three after having to pick himself up following a hefty spill on the final lap which helped him to claim fourth overall along with the final race holeshot prize ahead of Andy Wilson.

Lee Harrison

With a bit of time spare on Sunday, it was decided to have a fun race at the end of the day. The riders crazy enough to want another 6 laps of torture in the heat and on a rough Cumbria sand track had another element added to the mix…a le mans start where they would have to run the length of the start straight onto their bikes at the first corner and hammer a track that looked like a bomb had already hit. It was Andy Wilson that was triumphant and took the win from 250 2 stroke leader James Dent in second and Simon Booth picked up third.

With round two comfortably in the books all focus is on round three at the end of the month as the series heads south to the Wroxton circuit.
