With 2027 shaping up to be a huge year for British and Welsh Enduro, with the ISDE coming back to the UK on 13 and 18 September, Gary Jones looks back to when the ISDE was last held in Wales, way back in 1983…

Here’s a flashback with a few images from the 1983 ISDE held in and around Builth Wells. All images were shot at the Cwmowen special test just outside Builth Wells and bordering the Epynt military ranges.
September next year looks like a joint running of day five between the Welsh Trail Riders Association (WTRA) and the Dyfed Dirt Bike Club (DDBC) using the same area as where the images from 83 were taken, with a planned two special tests around the area on the Friday of the event before heading over the Epynt ranges and into the Crychan forest for a possible 50 miles of going in the woods followed by another test just above Cynghordy in Carmarthenshire if plans all work out.

With personnel from both WTRA and DDBC clubs adamant on making the Friday a tough one for the riders to remember heading home from Wales next year, the ISDE is certainly building some momentum as riders from all over the world make their way to Wales when the event runs from the 13th – 18th September.
