On the gas at Oxford! 2022 MX Nationals Round 6 – Race Report, Results & Final Standings

The Michelin MX Nationals, powered by Milwaukee, don’t do things by halves. They couldn’t find a suitable track for this sixth and final round of the championship, so they built their own. It was months in the planning, but only ten days in the making, and that’s the track, jumps, whoops, rollers, start, and start-straight. The officials, riders, and spectators all loved it, and all predict a bright future for the venue.

Harri Kullas and his Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha had already clinched the Leatt Pro MX1 title. But that didn’t stop a significant number of the top riders from turning up to sample the new Oxford Moto Parc track, and there was still the matter of the Apico Pro MX2 championship to decide between Jamie Carpenter (GRT KTM) and Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Gas Gas). Nevertheless, the weekend was full of action, and all the championships were decided.

The nature of the new track was always going to favour the larger MX1s over the smaller MX2s, and that was proved at the start of the first combined Pro race with Kullas getting the holeshot from Conrad Mewse (Stebbings KTM), Martin Barr (Apico Husqvarna), Tommy Searle (Crendon Fastrack Honda), Josh Gilbert (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) and Brad Todd (Gabriel KTM). In fact, the first MX2 rider was Elliott Banks-Browne (Husqvarna), and he was in eighth place.

For the first five laps, Mewse followed the leader Kullas as the pair slowly opened up a bigger and bigger lead over the new third-place man Searle, who had found a way past Barr on lap two. Mewse took the lead on lap six and went on to win by just five seconds from Kullas. Searle was third, just over fifty seconds behind the winning pair with Barr in his wheel tracks. Gilbert and Todd spent all race in fifth and sixth, with the first MX2 rider, Jogren Talvuki (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), seventh. Impressively Banks-Browne, considering his lack of riding over the last two years, was the second MX2 rider home, with Carpenter and Grimshaw third and fourth MX2.

The poor new track was suffering from its newness, and come the second and last combined Pro race of the year as, once again, Kullas got the holeshot from Mewse, Searle, Gilbert and Talvuki, and that was the order they finished. Kullas had an eleven-second lead over Mewse, who had a thirty-nine-second advantage over Searle. Teammates Gilbert and Talvuki were separated by just four seconds as they crossed the finish line, but they were racing in different classes.

Grimshaw and Carpenter were suffering from nerves before the start, but with a twelve points advantage, Carpenter was in the driving seat. The nerves were showing as they gated in twentieth and twenty-first and buried in mid-pack with a lot of work to do. Grimshaw did all he could fighting his way forward amongst the big MX1 machines and ended the race in fourteenth but fifth MX2 home. Carpenter did what he needed to do, crossing the finish line in seventeenth but sixth MX2 to become this year’s Pro MX2 champion.

Overall, it was Kullas from Mewse, Searle, Gilbert and Barr in the Pro MX1s and Talvuki from Walsh, Carpenter, Grimshaw and Banks-Browne in the Pro MX2s.

Jamie Carpenter Pro MX2 Champion

“That seemed a very long race to me,” said new Pro MX2 champion Carpenter, “I had a DNF early on in the year, which made it harder for myself, so I have been playing catch up ever since. It all turned around at Hawkstone as we were again on a level playing field. I made sure I had a good start and a good race in the first race to make it easier for myself in race two. It freed me up a bit in race two, which seemed to go on forever, but we finally got it done.”

When asked about the cut on his nose, Carpenter said, “Early last Thursday, I had a big crash in training when the bike cut out on the take-off on a big jump, and I landed on my head. Hence the nose. I am lucky to be here at all, putting in two good races and the championship”.

Shaun Southgate Expert MX1 Champion

With yet another three wins and a second place, Shaun Southgate was the overall winner of the RFX Expert MX1s and, with that overall win, becomes this year’s champion and will have to move up to the pros for next year. Race one winner Jaydon Ashwell (AJP Racing Gas Gas) didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend and was second overall, with Nathan Green (George Russell MC Yamaha) third.

Louie Kessell 2022 Expert MX2 British Champion!

Charlie Heyman (SJP Moto KTM) was crowned the Seven MXY125 class winner at the previous round, and his team thought, why not go out and race the big boys in RFX Expert MX2? So, he did and won all four races with ease. Sam Atkinson (Phoenix Tools Kawasaki) chassed him over the finish line three out of the four races for second overall, with Josh Coleman (Holeshot KTM) third.

A single point separated the top two riders in the Motoverde Amateur MX1s as with a win, two-second places and a third place Callum Gordon (MX Revive KTM) took the overall win from wildcard rider Josh Greedy (Kawasaki). John Kirk (Honda) was a distant third, with Joshua McCorkell (Husqvarna) just missing out on a podium place.

It was tight at the top of the Motoverde Amateur MX2s as Cullum Murfitt (KTM), and Luca Pegg (Yamaha) finished on equal points. Murfitt was the winner as he won the last race. Ben Clark (Yamaha) was third, with race two winner Logan Wilcox (KTM) fourth.

Luca Pegg 2022 Amateur MX2 Champion!

Four wins from four starts gave Adam Reeve (Kawasaki) in the Worx Financial Clubman MX1s, with Grant Martin (Yamaha) chasing him over the finish line three out of four times for second. Four consistent rides earnt James Thompson (Kawasaki) third overall, with Billy Saunders (WMS Honda) fourth.

One point separated George Boyce (Design Scaffolding Gas Gas) and Ben Wainwright (Wainwright Plant Honda) at the top of the Moto Connection Clubman MX2s. However, the positions were reversed in the final championship positions. Jasper Gibson (Moto-Connection KTM) was third overall, with wildcard rider Jamie Collins (KTM) fourth.

With two wins and two second places, Bayliss Utting (Husqvarna) won the Seven MXY2 class from race three winner Mckenzie Marshall (DK Offroad Kawasaki). Harvey Cashmore (Team Chamber Husqvarna) and Jak Taylor (Team Green Kawasaki) filled the following two places overall, separated by just two points.

Tyla Hooley (ASA United Gas Gas) was on form this weekend as with a couple of wins and a couple of second places; he took the overall in the Seven MXY125 class. Wildcard rider Wal Beaney (Store 114 KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend, was second, with Ben Mustoe (Matt Gardiner MX KTM) third.

Blake Ward-Clarke the 2022 SW85 Champion

With two wins and two second places, Josh Vail (SJP Moto Husqvarna) won the Syntol big wheel 85s beating Billy Askew (GRT KTM) into second place, for a change, but Askew did enough to clinch the class championship for this year. Charlie Richmond (Matt Gardiner KTM) was a distant third, with Jamie Keith (KTM) just missing out on a podium position.

Hayden Statt (Manchester MC KTM) won the Syntol small wheel 85s, but he couldn’t stop Blake Ward-Clarke (JMR KTM) with his second overall taking the championship. With a last race win, Alfie Geddes-Green (Matt Pope Gas Gas) was third overall, with Finlay Pickering (MrT’s KTM) fourth.

And that’s a wrap for another year. See you in 2023.
