Masterful return to Racing! 2021 Bridgestone British Masters – Race Report and Results

The 2021 British National Motocross season fired back into life with a tremendous opening round of the Bridgestone British Masters championship at Hawkstone Park at the weekend.

For the first time this year, the Pro racer lined up behind a start gate and with a good entry already committed to the series alongside some high profile wildcards anticipation was high for some great action.  The sun was out the track was prime and qualifying threw up some shocks with Moto-Cycle Yamaha’s Brad Todd claiming the prize money in MX1 and Rob Hooper Racing Yamaha’s Lewis Hall in MX2.

Brad Todd – The Fastest Qualifier

In Moto 1 Liam Knight’s Gabriel Insulation KTM rocketed from the start and he set about gapping the field with a blistering pace followed by GP regular Ashton Dickinson who was heading the MX2 class and also looking superfast.  Pre Race favourite Crendon Fastrack Honda’s Tommy Searle, who would come off spectacularly in qualifying, picked off his rivals after starting fourth but he couldn’t catch Knight and he had to settle for second. Dan Thornhill on his Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha looked great and finished a solid third in MX1 ahead of the PGVM Honda of Josh Spinks, Chambers Racing Glen McCormick, and Gav Stevenson.

While Dickinson cleared off into the distance his MX2 counterparts fought it out for a second, and it was another Crendon Fastrack Honda rider Jay Hague who would take that honour after scrapping it out with the Verde Substance KTM 2 smoker of Brad Anderson who was third, Gabriel Insulation KTM’s John Adamson was fourth, Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki’s Carlton Husband fifth and Apico Husqvarna’s Jamie Law in sixth.

Jay Hague

Knight was again the early leader in moto 2 but a fall would see him relinquish the lead to Searle who never looked back as he took the win and overall. Knight would remount and finish second. Spinks was also battling at the sharp end, but a collision with Knight saw him drop down the order and having to fight back through the field which he did to fifth.  Todd, who would suffer a DNF in race one due to a burst fuel pipe, avenged this result with third in moto 2 ahead of Thornhill in fourth, Spinks was fifth and Stevenson would continue his good day for sixth.  The MX1 standings at the end of the day would be Searle, Knight, Thornhill, Spinks, McCormick and Stevenson.

Dickinson was once again the lead MX2 racer and was keeping his heels clean at the front of the pack with the 450’s but behind him Adamson was in an epic fight through the pack and would finish 12 seconds shy of Dickinson when the chequered flag was dropped with Bike It MTX Kawasaki’s Taylor Hammal just a second behind him. Making up for a crash in race one, fastest qualifier Hall would finish fourth ahead of Hague, and the Crescent Yamaha of Jamie Carpenter.   When the points were tallied up the overall standings were Dickinson, Adamson, Hague, Hammal, Carpenter and Law.

Keirren Genge

Alfie Geddes-Green showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in the first three motos of the 65’s but Robbie Daly never looked back in the final moto to finish the weekend with a race victory with Geddes having to fight through the pack to second. On the box though it was Geddes-Green flanked by Daly and Olly Walters who put in four consistent motos for third.

In the Small Wheel 85’s, Reece Jones on his SJP Moto Husqvarna was unstoppable, topping qualifying before winning all four motos by a comfortable margin. Behind Jones, Drew Stock put in a solid weekends racing going 2-3-2-2 for an excellent second overall with Jamie Keith fending off Harlow Green for the final space on the podium.

Casey Lister

Billy Askew and Wal Beaney went at it hammer and tongs throughout the weekend but it was Askew who had the upper hand and he would go unbeaten in the four races.  Joining the party was Tyla Hooley who got himself well and truly in the mix finishing off the weekend with a second, nudging out Beaney in moto four.  So the podium was Askew, Beaney and Hooley and we reckon the racing in this class is going to be epic this season if it continues in this vein.

Harlow Green

On this Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki, Sam Atkinson is looking pretty darn special this year, as shown by mixing it last weekend with some of the Pro racers at 90 Racing’s season opener.  This weekend however it was in the MXY2 class where he plied his trade, doing so with aplomb claiming each and every moto victory over a chasing Bailey Johnston who had great speed but had to settle for second each time. Rounding out the podium was Kayde Rayns.

125’s

The 125cc class is going to make for awesome viewing in 2021 with a combination and youth and experience making this a feast for both eyes and ears.  On Saturday James Barker was the guy to beat taking both moto wins, but Ollie Colmer had the bit between his teeth on Sunday and rattled off two race wins to edge Barker out for the overall after they had tied on points. Matt Bayliss onboard a bog standard CR125 was the best of the battling rest and nailed down the third and final podium spot.

Oli Benton

There were three different race winners in the ultra-competitive Amateur MX1 group, and with one moto victory to his name, it was Adam Wells who notched up the highest tally of points to gain the overall ahead of race 1 winner Ed Briscoe and Sunday’s double moto victor Aaron Patstone.

Joshua Dodwell Scott

Denny Rapson drew first blood in the Amateur MX2 class but from there on in the chequers for the remaining races went the way of Alfie Jones who would claim the overall courtesy of beating Rapson in the final moto after they were level on points. Patrick Jackson had a solid day and finished the weekend in third.

Adam Wells

Mark Kinsley rode like a demon in the Clubman going through the card with a 1-1-1-1 weekend. Max Wood was never out of the top three and took second over the weekend with Karl Jenkinson in third.

Congratulations to the team at the Bridgestone British Masters and everyone who attended for abiding by the rules and showing the sport in such a great light. It was great to be back at the races.
