Corey’s Cumbrian Haul! 2022 Acerbis Amateur Nationals Round 3 – Race Report & Results

It was a trip up north to sunny Cumbria and the sandy track of Haverigg which played host to round 3 of the Acerbis Amateur Nationals series where the track crew did an amazing job at prepping the track which got really rough making it a tough weekend on the riders.

The first guys to hit the track were the Roberts Plant Engineers Vets Over 50 class and it was business as usual for Brian Wheeler as he put on a masterclass making it look so easy and staying smooth he took 5 more wins and another maximum points haul extending his series lead further. Local lad Richard Miller tried his utmost to overhaul the dominant Wheeler but however, like he did at Hawkstone, had to settle for the runner up spot. James Whitelaw stood on the third step of the podium just ahead of defending champ Chris Brown and Cumbrian Paul Coward.

Vets 50 holeshot carnage

In the LS2 Helmets Vets Over 40 category it was 2021 champion, Kawasaki man Ryan Voase who took home a full sweep as he stormed to all 5 race wins over the weekend convincingly. Lee Martin consolidated his series lead with runner up on the weekend with a mixed bag of results inside the top 5 fending off Danny Tollett who took third. Barry Gray led laps early on in moto three but in the end fourth overall was where he was credited with just one point ahead of Simon Bonsor.

Ryan Voase #2 – Vets 40 winner

In the Motoverde Ladies category it was battle royale at the front as Grace Richards and Kathryn Booth diced it out at the front. The pair couldn’t leave each other alone all weekend which even involved a moto three collision and it looked tight at the top of the results going into the final race of the weekend. Booth however ran into issues and a DNF put her right outside the top 5 overall and gifting the series lead to rival Richards as she went on to claim the win and the overall. Nadiya Jones picked up the pieces for runner up on the weekend and Amie Goodlad lost a few points but is definitely still in the fight for the championship with third overall.

The Manchester Xtreme supported Junior Open class were last to hit the track over the weekend so got the worst of the conditions but it was Liam Somerville who made it three overall victories from three rounds and extended his already big lead even further but he didn’t have it all his own way this time around. Kerr Thomson took three of the five race wins over the weekend and if it wasn’t for his first race ninth, would have been in for a shout at the top spot. Richard Evans came back from a moto four spill to recover to third overall on the day while Aidee Smith had to work hard coming through the pack in a few races to claim a seasons best fourth overall.

Close racing as always greeted us in the Moto Connection 125 2 stroke class and it was all about 2 guys that separated themselves from the rest. Damon Strydom and Rob Holyoake continued their season-long scrap for the title on the Cumbrian coast and they each shared the wins and runner ups alternatively and went into the final race tied on points in a winner takes all dual. Strydom was the man to claim that final race victory and with it the overall honours pulling back a mere 2 points on Holyoake in the championship. Charlie Hamlet could do nothing about the front pair and had to settle for third on the podium ahead of former champ Ash Harland, who normally prefers the hard-pack tracks, had a good weekend in the soft stuff and took fourth.

It was a dominating weekend for the leader of the California MX Dreams Open 2 stroke category as Corey Hockey claimed his first maximum of the year with five wins leaving all the action to happen behind him. There was a 3-way scrap on for the runner up on the day between James Dent, Adam Harris and Stephen Wade with the trio sharing the second, thirds and fourths between them all weekend. It was local man Dent that ended up coming out on top of this little fight though taking the runner up spot while Harris just scraped onto the lower step of the rostrum by a couple of points over Wade who had to settle for fourth this time around.

In the Craigs Motorcycles MX2 class former Buildbase Honda rider Callum Green made a wildcard appearance at Haverigg and claimed the overall honours with a 4-1-1-2-1 scorecard giving him a slender 6 point cushion over Rob Clitheroe. Clitheroe enjoyed Hawkstone so much that he decided to jump back on the 250 and throw another wildcard ride in this weekend claiming a moto win and second overall for his efforts. CPS Husqvarna rider Dylan Spencer claimed the moto four victory on his way to third overall and consolidated his championship lead in the process while Harry Linton recovered from his 8th and 11th results in the first two races to work his way to fourth overall.

Everything got turned upside down and back to front in the Paradise MX Holidays MX1 class as Andy Wilson went out with an injury and James Hutchinson had 2 mechanical issues after 3 race wins meaning they lost a lot of points. Jack Beniston put in a consistent weekend and even bagged a race victory to become the sole leader of the championship after coming in tied with Wilson before the weekend’s action. Luke Meredith also claimed a race win but wasn’t quite as consistent as Beniston so had to settle for runner up this time around while Ed Briscoe quietly went about his business and landed on the podium just ahead of Daniel Parry.

With round 3 wrapped up and in the history books it’s onto round 4 in 4 weeks at the end of June.
