Adamson & Hague on the Gas at Duns! Scot MX SACU Scottish Motocross Championship Round 2 – Race Report and Results

After a damp start on Saturday, the track had dried out overnight and was in prime condition for Sunday. With the increased number of adult races planned for the day, it needed to be as the big 4 strokes would leave their mark.

Report and Images by Raymond Thomson – Madmaxmedia

The riders had travelled from the four corners of the UK to be at Duns Motocross for the 2nd Round of the ScotMX Scottish Championship. The depth of field in the MX1-MX2 class was impressive, to say the least, and in the other races, there were a great number of well-known riders. Bang on time, practice was underway and qualifying was extremely close. There were seconds between the top 10 riders in most classes. There were three blocks of races planned with some support races in the kid’s classes.

Autos
The Auto’s were up again first with just the one sighting lap prior to their race. It was 5/5 race wins for Jay Cooper again and Freddie Box secured an overall 2nd for the weekend with his 2nd place in the race. Lyall Rutherford’s third place was well deserved as he rode consistently throughout the race, “amazing what a good night’s rest will do” according to his dad Dean. Zak Hendry and Ivan Williamson pushed the entire race to ensure it was the same riders in the top 5.

Vets O40/O50
Up next on the race program were the Vets. This was a combined over 40’s/50’s race and as expected it was the younger of the two classes that stole the show. Stephen Kelly showed his race pace ahead of Barry Gray to take all three race wins. Barry pushed hard but Stephen’s lap times were impressive. All three races had a familiar look to them as the running order was identical. Alan Deans was a domineering figure on the big Kawasaki as he settled for the overall third and Alastair McGowan made sure he stayed ahead of Barry Smith all day.

In the O50’s it was Morton Hannah who had the march on Ian Wilson as the Vets World Champion tried his hardest to match the experienced Hannah. Not slip up from Hannah today as he eased home in first in all three races. Stephen Pollock had a welcome return to racing after taking a few years out and rode consistently to bag the final podium place. Andrew Leask was unlucky not to make the top three as he finished on the same points as Pollock but lost out on the race countback. Brian Fraser eased into 5th spot to round off a good weekend for the Vets.

Adult ‘C’ Race
Dylan Grieve wasted no time blasting to the front and staying there. After riding hard for two laps in each race, he looked comfortable for the remainder of the first two races, it wasn’t until the third race that he had a slip in concentration and cross rutted at a downhill right hander and high sided at slow speed but he still had plenty time to dust himself off and gap the field for the overall first. Daniel Cook was the best of the rest with a 3rd and two 2nds for his troubles and pushed hard at times over jumping the big uphill jump and did enough to finish ahead of Ryan Smith who got the overall third. Adam Curran had a steady ride in fourth and Scott Mair did his best to grab fourth with a third spot in race two but missed out by faltering in race 3 to finish off the top 5.

Adult ‘B’ Race
The busiest race of the day so far on Sunday saw Ben Thompson take the honours. With two 1st and a 2nd, he just managed to grab the fastest lap of the first race from the very fast Sean Henderson, but his mistakes cost him dearly and Ben benefited from it. With a strong field and some very close racing, the Adult B did not disappoint. Stuart Mack managed to win the third race and grab second by one point from Steven McCormack who rode consistently but could get a much-needed win. The high flying Ivan Williamson proved he can style more than the jumps by finishing fourth as Steven Lennie’s persistence paid off finishing fifth.

65’s
The young guns picked up where they left off on Saturday. Liam Bell grabbed the honours on the Sunday although he was to finish third overall for the weekend. Hayden Statt secured the overall first on Sunday with his solid second place. The fast-starting Alfie Heron came in third on the day but earned his overall runner up slot. Malachi Allan maintained his fourth place ahead of Jaden Anderson whose final race cost him one place as he slipped down the order.

Rhys Whyment

85’s SW/BW
Rhys Whyment took the race win on Sunday to grab the overall after sitting second on the Saturday. Cole McCulloch had already done enough to secure the second spot without riding on Sunday as Torren Husband ended the race in third to match the overall result. Scott McPhee’s fifth on the day meant that he finished above Robert Wood even though he managed a creditable second place on Sunday.

Reece Dawson

Rookies
It’s hard to tell sometimes how quick the riders are in comparison to the other races, but Ben Kennedy could have raced in the MX1/MX2 race and given a good account of himself. As it was, he dominated the Rookies race and showed he is one to watch. 5/5 wins he rode super smooth over the rough track without faltering. Lewis Glyn had a great race on Sunday grabbing second place, but it was not enough to dislodge current champion Logan Hendry as his fourth place on the day was enough for the overall second. Reece Dawson’s solid weekend and third place meant he was able to stay ahead of Logan Ferguson as the top 5 remained the same all weekend.

Martin Barr

MX1/MX2
The main event had everyone watching in awe as some of the quickest riders in the UK descended upon Duns. Several of the riders benefited from riding the previous day in the Adult support but John Adamson would have his work cut out to maintain his 100% record of race wins. With some very tasty prize money on offer and the acclaim of their peers, the riders prepped their gates for the first race and what a race it was. Martin Barr was first out the gate, but Ryan Maclean looked back to his best as he got a flying start, but it wasn’t long before John Adamson got the better of Maclean and gained the position to track down Barr. As the last lap flag came out, it was the trigger for Adamson to push on and take the lead. He held Barr off who had the better lap times for the race, but John was able to use his race craft and protect his lead winning by 3 seconds. Maclean came home a deserved third and the young gun George Simmutch showed his speed and consistency in this race by pushing for a solid fourth. Brad Todd came in fifth but there was more to come from him as he was followed in by the first of the MX2 riders Jay Hague. It was like a local Elgin race for Ben Edwards and Aaron McCarroll as they had their own tussle.

Jay Hague

The second race was just as thrilling but Barr made a costly mistake as he pushed Adamson late in the race and lost the front end. He did recover to secure another second place as Brad Todd and Jay Hague showed they meant business. Maclean and Simmutch continued their battle slightly down the order.

The final race and it was still in the balance to see who would take home the overall in MX1 and MX2. This time it was a master class from Martin Barr as he gapped the field and ultimately won comfortably. Gary Gibson got a great start but made a mistake which lead to him falling to his best finish of the day in 5th but Ryan Maclean had the biggest misfortune as a snapped rear brake lever forced him backwards and leave the track at one point riding into the fence. Brad Todd, Adamson and Jay Hague swapped places and ran out in that order giving Adamson the overall in the MX1.

Ryan Maclean

Martin Barr missed out by one point as Adamson’s third was just enough to claim the victory. Brad Todd had a deserved third place as Ryan Maclean and George Simmutch made up the top five with their entertaining rides.

The MX2 overall comfortably went to Jay Hague followed by James Hutchinson on the 250 two-stroke KTM. It was a solid day for him and some much-needed race time. The ever-present Ryan Thomson showed he was able to run in a strong field as he got the final podium place. Seth Moir had a steady race and ran home fourth just ahead of Donald Draffan whose very recent return to riding after a few years off proved he still had the passion to race.

Round three of the ScotMX championship will be scheduled soon.
