The 125cc class of the 2025 Motul British Motocross Championship at Round 1 at Hawkstone Park served up some epic racing with a stacked and talented field throwing their 2-stroke machines around the famous sand-based circuit in Shropshire.

The second instalment of the series takes place at Canada Heights in Kent, this Sunday, 18th May, where Championship leader Ryan Waggott will be looking to extend his lead and take off into the distance.
Waggott put in a sublime performance to lead moto one from start to finish at Hawkstone ahead of Freddie Gardiner and Hayden Statt, before pulling some great passing moves in the second race to pull sixteen seconds clear of Statt and Charlie Richmond.
Ryan, who is 18 and comes from Cumbria, says of his win, “I had a great off-season with Dan from Moto Coach, and I felt good on the bike. I have managed to put a bit of weight on, which has taken my suspension to a whole other level, so I was hoping to be at the top.”

With a long seven weeks between British Rounds, Ryan has been keeping busy, saying, “The break hasn’t really bothered me. I have been out in my bike at the weekends and keeping my self keen”.
In fact, in between times, the Scottish MX Championship has been a good hunting ground for the Radgie RY KTM rider, who ploughed through a three-ride maximum in the 2 Stroke 150 class at Round 3 in Elgin a couple of weeks back and stormed to an unbeaten five-ride clean sheet at the Acerbis Amateur Nationals 125cc class at Drumclog.
“I had a good weekend at Drumclog, which is a fairly local track for me. I spend a bit of time there, and my expectations were high.”
Training in Scotland is one of the main factors Ryan puts behind his stamina, which saw him remain a great pace right until the end of the motos at Hawkstone Park, “Yeah, I put in a lot of motos in the deep sand up at Tain and worked hard on my fitness in the gym.”
With Two Rounds coming up on fairly local terrain in Scotland at Duns in August, how does Ryan feel about racing there? “Duns is a local track to me. Despite it being in Scotland, it isn’t sand, but I am excited to get behind the gate there.”

Before then, though, he has to make the long trip down to Canada Heights in Kent, which he is looking forward to, “I raced Canada Heights a couple of years ago on my 85 and had a couple of podiums. I liked the track then and hopefully still do now.” continued Ryan.
Ryan, who will be moving up to a 250 next year, says his goals this weekend are “To get the Holeshot and go from there, I am hoping for a clean sweep again like Hawkstone.”
As always it will be tough though and Ryan knows this with the pre-season favourite Jamie Keith returning from injury and the likes of Hayden Statt, Drew Stock, Charlie Richmond, Lucas Moncrieff, Harry Lee, Kameron Greenhaigh, Zane Stephens and Lewis Spratt all looking to make their mark on the series and get a good result, “There’s a good handful of riders in the class that are fast and Jamie did well last year just missing out on the title. I hope his injury hadn’t affected his speed, so we can have some good battles.”

One rider missing will be Freddie Gardiner, who is out injured, so we wish him a speedy recovery.
So what would it mean to Ryan to win the title? “It would mean a lot to me, and to show a full-time grafter can get it done, after all the effort I put into it.”

The Championship picture
Waggott holds a 8 point lead over Statt going into the weekend and with Gardiner out Richmond will be looking to shuffle up into the top three. Everyone though will have their eyes on Jamie Keith who has 50 points to make up on Waggott. Jamie said to MXGB about his return, “I cannot wait. This year hasn’t been my year but I’ve put in the work and I’m ready to turn this ship around.”
