Hooley rules at Route 44! Cumbria MX Club Championships Rounds 1 & 2 – Race Report & Results

There is no hiding that this season is going to be a strange one, with so many events and Championship clashes, however not this weekend. Cumbria Mx managed to land a free weekend and booked the weather so all roads (and Boats) lead to Haverigg and an entry of up to 350 arrived at the Seaside.

It always amazes me seeing the distances riders and families travel to these events, there must have been a chartered boat from Northern Ireland, several from the far north of Scotland and it all adds to these events and the atmosphere they bring.

First up following practice was the first Auto race, and a huge gate of them ready to race, these races are always action-packed and some serious talent on show. Despite a moto 3 spill, it was Northern Irelands Ethan Gawley making a flying start to his season going 1-1-2 to pip moto 3 winner Freddie Box to top spot, the podium was completed and 3 solid and consistent motos by Jenson Knowles.

The 65 class went to a final race decider between local lad Finley Pickering and Scotlands Malachi Allen, Pickering took the W and the overall, however, the table was to be turned the following day, both these kids have big futures ahead of them and great style on the bike. As with the Autos, the 3rd place rider had a solid day going 3-4-3 and that was Hayden Gibson.

GRT Holeshot KTM rider Cole McCullough was in dazzling form in the Small Wheel 85 Class taking maximum points ahead of the North East’s Hayden Statt, Lewis Spratt completed the podium. It could have been a bit different for several other riders in the class, last years S/W champion Owen Kenningley had a moto 3 second, and Jamies Keith went 2-3 but no return from moto 3 to rest up a bruised leg for the British Youth at Culham next weekend.

Tyla Hooley took his GAS GAS to the top step of the Big Wheel podium going 3-1-1, there was a great battle in moto 1 between Jake Walker and West Cumbria Liam Johnston that went down to the final lap before Walker pulled away, and that was your top 3 for the day, Hooley Walker, Johnston.

Now there was some serious speed in the Rookies class, these riders do not mess about. Braydon Ferguson has been putting the miles in practising and hit the ground running in race season going 1-1-2 to take the overall ahead of the #54 Drew McCreanor and Ayden Smith in third. Reece Dawson and Brad Knowles had some impressive motos but could not string 3 races together during the day.

A Cumbrian 1-2 in the novice C class with Dylan Telford impressive out front taking the overall ahead of Scott Atkinson, Telford went 2-1-1 after following the #44 Machine with no name home in Moto1. Sam Lyons-Carr made the trip from Newcastle worthwhile completing the podium in third.

A packed gate in the Over 35s class lead to battles all over the track with some great racing, Although James Whitlow took maximum points the battle behind was brilliant with scores all over the place, moto 2-second place Gordan Morrison ended up 16th Overall, moto2 second Ben Southward 12th Overall. The two final podium place were eventually taken by Mathew Ward and Craig Kerfoot respectively.

A very fast B class was next up with Danny Tollet taking the overall with a 2-1-1 race scorecard, Ivan Kerr followed home and moto1 winner Niall Cregan in third. There were 2 ladies who finished in the top 15 as well, Jane Daniels in 12th and it was brilliant to see the returning Elaine McEachern returning to racing in Cumbria following a break from the sport and bring home 14th Overall.

We have been treated to seeing some of the countries best over the past year at Haverigg in the A class and this weekend was no different, the top 12 will all be parked up at Culham next weekend for the British Championship, Local racer Will Miller placed 13th to break that line up although there were several more British competitors behind him. Brad Anderson took maximum points on Saturday but had 2 brilliant battles firstly with Stuart Edmonds in Moto1 and Jason Meara in moto 3. The top 3 was to finish Anderson Meara Edmonson at the end of a brilliant days racing.

Sunday 25th April Round 2 Cumbria Mx

The sun was shining once more and another huge turn out was ready for another day of racing.

Freddie Box went one better from Saturday to take the overall ahead of Ethan Gawley by 2 points only, Jenson Knowles won moto 1 and completed the podium in third, great racing from these little racers.

Malachi Allen as above went one better on Sunday to take the overall with a solid 2-2-1 scorecard, Alfie Lawrie won moto 2 impressively to take second overall and the #296 machine of Kai Westell in third. Saturday winner Finley Pickering won Moto 1 but had a DNF in moto3.

This is a recurring theme, however, another racer went one better in the S/W class, Hayden Statt preparing for a crack at the Nationals this year won on the day, Lewis Spratt’s 3-3-3 was enough for second with Ben McConville completing the top3. Cole McCullaugh had a DNF in moto 3 with prevented him from getting in the podium mix.

Tyla Hooley took maximum points in the Big Wheel Class, to make the trip to Haverigg a worthwhile one, Liam Johnston took a very impressive second overall in a super-fast class, Lancashires Max Harris improved results as the day went on the take the final podium place.

Brad Knowles survived a moto3 battle to take the Rookie overall from moto 3 winner Ayden Smith and second overall who has taken to the bigger bike brilliantly, Reece Dawson #8 took third overall just ahead of Arai Elcock. Braydon Ferguson was lucky after taking a big crash after a moto 1 second.

Three different winners took the flag in the Novice C class on Sunday, Jamie Williamson took moto1 and the overall, Jack Ratcliffe’s moto 3 second was enough for second overall and moto 2 winner Daniel Cook in third. The third of the race winner saw an impressive Samuel Carruthers hold off the chasers to take the win.

The over 30s on Sunday maximum points went to Mr X with no name given. Saturday winner James Whitlow continued his good for to finish second overall and the number #111 Neil Griffiths in third.

Niall Cregan pulled out a final moto win to just beat Danny Tollet to the top spot on the over 30s class with some great racing in the Adult B class, Jack Naylor took the win in Moto 1 and that was enough for third overall.

The A’s we last up, and as last year Brad Anderson sat the day out to concentrate on son Vinnie. Stuart Edmonds took full advantage of this despite a moto 3 6th to take the overall. Callum Mitchell was had a great year at Route44 last year took second overall with Cumbria Jamie Law bringing the 2stroke home in third.
