Gajser claims first Yamaha MXGP win at Trentino

Tim Gajser secured his first MXGP race victory on Yamaha machinery with a stunning performance at the MXGP of Trentino, racing to second overall at round five of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Riding in front of a huge Slovenian following at what is widely considered one of his home rounds, Gajser overcame injury and adversity to deliver one of the standout rides of the weekend aboard the Yamaha YZ450FM.

After a strong start in race one, the five-time world champion ran inside the top two for much of the moto before dropping back to fourth in the closing stages. However, the result set him up perfectly for race two.

In the second moto, Gajser quickly worked his way into contention, moving into second after passing Kay de Wolf before setting his sights on race leader Lucas Coenen. Applying constant pressure, he forced the mistake that opened the door, taking over at the front before delivering a faultless ride to the chequered flag.

The victory marked his first race win since joining Yamaha and capped off a gritty performance just a week after a heavy crash in Sardegna. The result moves Gajser up to fourth in the championship standings.

Gajser said:

“I’m almost speechless and I’m super happy with this result. Coming into the weekend I knew it was going to be a difficult one because I was still in a lot of pain after the crash last week in Riola, but I gave everything I had. The fans really helped push me on, especially in the second moto, so a huge thank you to everyone who travelled here and supported me. I also want to thank the whole team and everyone around me, from the physios to the staff, because we worked so hard during the week to get me ready to race. It makes this result even more special. Now we have a break, which gives me time to recover properly, and then we’ll be ready to go again in four weeks.”
