Another Widworthy Classic! Badger Goss Trophy – Race Report & Results

Back on Easter Sunday, the Devon Classic Motorcycle Club hosted their first Scramble of 2022 which was the Badger Goss Trophy meeting and was held at their Widworthy 2 track just outside of Honiton in Devon and had attracted a bumper entry not just in Twinshocks but also Classic bikes with many different classes.

Report and Images by Dave Rich

The track had been watered prior to the meeting and had been shortened a bit from previous years and was to produce some good racing which was fast, especially in the Twinshock A class which was to thrill the many spectators in attendance.

With so many different classes for the Classic races, they were combined into three categories which were Classic A, Classic B & Pre 77, and Classic Clubman.

Classic A Start with Matt Fry getting the jump

The Classic A class saw a hattrick of wins for Adam Butt on his 350 BSA in the Over 250cc Pre 74 class with Martin Stevens claiming a clean sweep also in the Under 250cc Pre 74 class whereas in the Pre 65 under 350cc class it was Colin Hickie on his 350 Hickie BSA who was unstoppable, but in the over 350cc Pre 65 class it was Peter Hollinshead who won the first two races on his 650 A10 BSA only to be denied a clean sweep by Matt Fry on his 600 Jawa Cheney who pipped Hollinshead in the last race. In the Pre 68 class we saw Luke Hickie on his 500 Hickie BSA win all three races with Martin Kemp on the 500 BSA Faber second to Hickie in all three races.

No 846 Andy Davey & No 557 Jules Curnow giving there all in the combined Classic B class

The Classic B class saw Garry Martin on his 250 Honda win the opening Pre 74 Under 250cc race, but it was Jamie Evans who took the honours in the other two races and with it took the overall whereas in the Over 250cc Pre 74 class there was a fine performance from Neil Williams winning all three races with Ian Grout on his 520 CCM second to Williams in all three races. Terence Fox on his 199 Triumph Tiger Cub took all three race wins in the Pre 65 Under 350cc class with Dan Field powering his 500 Norton Metisse to victory in all three Over 350cc Pre 65 races.

The Pre 68 class saw Steven Thorne on his 475 BSA MRD Victor win the opening two races but was beaten to the chequered flag in the last race by James Tupman, but it was Thorne who took the overall. In the Pre 77 class which was open to all capacity machines, there was no stopping Ed Spears on his 580 Yamaha who took three convincing wins from John Young on his 350 RM Suzuki who finished second to Spears in all three races.

Philip Nicholls No 78 holding off Neil Hammersley in the combined Classic A class

The Clubman class was close and at the end of the day had produced three different winners with Paul Shillingford winning the opening race and Nic Ingram race two, but it was Phil Baker who won the last race and with it was tied on points for the overall with Shillingford, but by virtue of Baker with the better result in the last race he was to take the overall.

No 46 Wayne Butt being pressured by No 66 Terry House in the Twinshock A Class

The Twinshock A class saw the pits empty as everyone was looking forward to the battle between what could only be described as some of the fastest Twinshock riders in the Southwest which included three of the winning VetsMXDN winning team at Farleigh Castle back in 2021. The opening race saw Luke Hill have a flyer out of the gate on the CR500 Honda and had a early lead but it was short lived as the race was stopped and had to be restarted and this time it was the 490 Maico of Wayne Butt who hit the front from Kristian Marshall who was back riding after injury just a head of the Fasthouse Butler Racing Maico of Terry House, but not such a good start for Hill who went into neutral up the start straight and was mid pack. House was all over Marshall on the opening lap desperate to get pass as not to let Butt get away at the front and eventually, he managed to pass on lap 3 and was soon closing in on Butt for the lead breathing and on the last lap he managed to pass Butt and took over and took the win with Marshall holding off Hill in the closing stages taking third. In the second moto it was Hill who made no mistakes this time with the early lead from House, but House was to go wide on the third corner and into the ropes which dropped him down the field abit. Tim Dallaway was in second on his Hickie Racing 500 BSA but had Butt to hold off on the opening lap before losing out to Butt on the second lap, But Butts race was soon over as his bike throttle stuck open and went away from him and down, he went and by the time he caught up with it to switch it off it had seized. House was now back up into third and was soon to pass Dallaway and did close on Hill but to no avail and had to settle for second with Dallaway taking third.

No 123 Roy Richards & No 46 Chris Stone in action in the Twinshock B class

In the last moto again, it was Hill who was triumphant into the first corner from Dallaway and Butt who was out on his spare bike with House back in 4th. Hill was soon to ease away at the front and House was to pass Butt and was now on the tail of Dallaway on the second lap who was giving his all to hold House off which he did for another lap, but then Dalloway’s race was to end as he pulled off the track with a mechanical problem. House was absolutely flying and was to close right up with Hill as they entered the last lap and backmarkers were to come in to play and it was all House needed as Hill got held up and House shot through to take over and went on to take the win and the overall to much applause with Hill taking second and Marcus Clare coming home in third.

In the Twinshock B class it was Mark Dean who took the chequered flag in the opening race ahead of Steve Gray, but Gray was to win the other two races and with it took the overall.

Mike El-ayouby missed the opening Twinshock C race but won the other two races

The Twinshock C class there was a big hiccup from Mike El-ayouby who was to miss the opening race as he went out in the wrong class in the opening block, and it was Kevin Spiller who took the win but El-ayouby was to win the other two races ahead of Daniel Morley with Spiller taking two thirds which was to give him the overall.

Jon Dinner was to win the opening Twinshock D class race, but it was Ashley Bray who won the other two races to give him the overall with Jeremy Lile putting together three good results to give him second overall by one point ahead of Dinner.

Ed Spear was dominant in the Pre 77 class
