Trickett is crowned! 2020 Wulfsport King of the Castle Motocross – Report and Results

A glorious weekend and the legendary Farleigh Castle circuit was the perfect setting for the 2020 Wulfsport King of the Castle Twinshock Motocross meeting which was held last weekend by the Cumbria Twinshock Club.

The meeting, as always culminates in the King of the Castle race and from the start, it was Lewis Trickett who took control and never looked back on his way to a fantastic victory. Thomas Merton would keep it close though and finished an excellent second. Jake Penny rounded out the podium in third.

Over the two days Brad O’Leary would take the spoils in the Expert class over the soon to be crowned King, Trickett, although he wouldn’t win any of the four motos.  Trickett would take two of the race victories while Alex Rach would fire in with the other two but a DNF in the final race would halt his chances of the win and he would end up in fifth behind Merton in third and Terry House fourth who was close to a podium spot in the main race.

Harvey Cashmore stamped his authority on the 250 Twinshock group with 4 wins from 4. Jim Shand would end the weekend in second with Matt Bennett third.

In the Four Strokes, Joel Hughes pitched in with a 1-1-1-2 scorecard to take the overall ahead of Matt Thomas and Bryan Withers, with the final moto being won by George Fountaine who would only race on Sunday.

Sam Marcom showed his pace with a maximum in the Clubman 1 category from Dan Roberts in second and Richard Benham third, while in Clubman 2 the honours went the way of the unbeaten Tom Salt. Behind Salt, Steve Cadd was second and Matthew Gurke was third.

Apart from a race three blip Dean Warren was on top form in the over 40’s, collecting the victory ahead of Martin Cuddy and Michael McBride who would share the podium in second and third. The only other race winner was Justin Robinson.

The Over 50’s group was split into A and B such was the demand for spaces. William Burgess topped and tailed his weekend with victories in the A Class, but with nothing in between, he was pinned down to ninth position. The title though went the way of Mark Roberts who would win moto two on the way to his victory. Greg Cox was second with Chris Koch third. Moto three winner Steve Wells would end the weekend in fifth with no points scored in his final moto.

In the B group Mike Davis was super focussed and he racked up three moto wins and the overall, fending off Moto two winner Eamonn Cullen. Mark Mumford would stand on the final step of the podium in third.

Andy Hinchcliffe was the top dog in the Classics going through the card with a full quota of race wins. Behind Hinchcliffe, Sam Nicholls edged out Phillip Nicholls for second.

Pat Rowe took first blood in the Over 60’s but Pete Mathia fought back and would win the remaining three moto’s and would stand on the top step of the podium over Rowe and Tom Lowe in third.

In the Twinshock 125’s Stephen McMcormick and John Davis would tie on points but by taking the chequers in the final moto (and in another two) the title would go the way of McMcormick, from Davis, with Chris Lambourn third.

George Gough powered home three race wins in the Pre 83 125’s and even a low scoring final moto couldn’t stop him from nailing the title. In second Lance Marshall held off Nathan Kingcombe in third. Rob Mead would take the chequers on the final moto but with no points in the opening race, fourth was the highest he could finish overall.

In the WME 250 class Elliot Hardman claimed revenge on Sam Russell for inflicting his only defeat in moto one by firing in a triple dose of number one spots to deliver the overall. Russell would finish second with Dave Russell in third.

Zac Hackett was a class act in the WME 125’s and with three wins to his name he would claim the overall ahead of Jacob Griffiths and James Hudson. Nicky Jones didn’t have the consistency to challenge for a podium spot but would be victorious in the third moto.

Another rider to go through the card, and looking unstoppable was Johnathan Tapp in the WME 500 class. Tapp’s win would come at the expense of second-placed Jason Aylett and Ashley Hudson in third.

Well done to everyone involved for making this event happen in tough circumstances, after a date change and with all of the other difficulties Coronavirus threw at them.
