“The Cwm Lladdfa” Extreme Enduro – Race Report & Results

The Maesteg Motorcycle Club hosted the “The Cwm Lladdfa” Extreme Enduro at the weekend, and what an amazing weekend with completely different ends of the weather scale meaning every rider got an extreme weekend no matter the event. Events were kicked off with the young guns on Saturday in the 65 and 85cc classes within the 8-12 support class.

Report by Mark Hillier-Rees

It was a great show for our sport with the amount of youth riders on the startline in what can be described as biblical rain, no xbox or PlayStation at play here. There were some stand out rides from George Sheldon and Jacob Wislon on the 65cc and 85cc respectively. Second event was the 13-16 year olds on 85cc and 125+cc bikes. Kiean Tatchell stormed to an impressive overall win on the yz 125 machine supplied by Marsh Mx.

The second part of the day was challenged by the big bikes and their lighter enduro counterparts. On what was intentionally marked as an easy flowing course was later turned into a challenge filled with huge water splashes from the morning’s huge downfall. The big bikes saw a top three of twins with Tim Mitchell followed by Ed Harris and Jason Markos. Tim only being 4 minutes off the overall eider on an enduro bike by the name of Alex Dawson in the Clubman. Winner of the sportsman was Jordan Walters and lady Laura Ciotte bagging 8 laps to finish as top female rider finishing around mid pack overall.

Sunday saw better weather yet held a surprise for the riders. Yes this was an extreme however the brutality of the two events was not yet known. The morning racing saw Lee Cornish take the overall of the 50 riders in the over 40 class finishing on 5 laps along with 5 other riders. Lori Waite in the Clubman one of the 5 lap finishers took the top step honours in clubman along with Christian Morse doing so in the Sportsman 1 lap further back. Also on four laps was Cameron Games who took the youth win yet whilst losing her radiator cap and waiting to be lapped before restarting to finish on two laps was Vanessa Ruck winning the ladies. Three laps easily achievable with no hiccups would have put her in 3rd in clubman.

For the grand finale we had a spectacle in store which regrettably was not viewable due to Drakefords crazy rules. No matter how much they never made sense we set our standards to follow guidelines and thank the public for adhering to them. The rock garden the hill climbs and the near vertical descents can only be partially understood by video footage. The course was brutal with the only plus being the weather blessing the riders with a dry day. Charlie Frost took the lead early with the pack using their minds wisely and picking their way through the course. The experts saw Reece Gazzard, Rhys Davies and Harry Hillier-Rees battling it out all coming together on the 4th lap at the insane paddock area hill. Clubman riders, friends and rivals Andrew Botto and Paul Davies battled through the terrain against each other for 3 hours. The championship class saw the front runners battle it out with some tight racing all the way through. Joe Wootton leading on the final lap closely followed by Charlie and Lee saw Joe take a wrong line half a mile from the finish losing around 6 minutes from his previous 5 lap times meaning Charlie was crowned the Cwm Lladdfa Champion putting in a cracking ride followed by Lee Sampson and Joe Wootton. Rhys Davies and Reece Gazzard tied for first after tieing on laps and sportingly agreeing a tie after a rock garden mix up and Jason Hurst coming in 3rd one lap in arrears. Andrew Botto won the Clubman followed by over 50 veteran rider Paul Davies and Ioan Heycock in 3rd.

Overall the weekend created some epic performances, riding and atmosphere even without spectator presence. Sherco-Offroad/Maesteg Motorcycle Club would like to thank all its marshals, sponsors, supporters and riders for making this happen and look forward to 2022 with its new list of events.
