Teenage Kicks! 2026 AMCA British Motocross Championship Round 1 - Race Report & Results

The new teenage kids on the block have certainly laid down a marker in the 2026 AMCA British Motocross Championship supported by Rokit Tyres, proving that they are both very capable and willing to take the challenge to the more established AMCA aces. During round one at Bevercotes last weekend, both Tyla Hooley (18) and Jayden Jones (16) produced simply stunning performances to thus score overall wins in the respective Open and MX2 classes.

Race Report, Interview and Images by Mike Wood

The first round of the series, hosted by Ollerton MXC, produced a perfect stage for the action to commence, with the club pulling out all the stops and much more. So many congratulations to them! The only downside in what was an otherwise memorable event came with the intervention of wet weather during the final block of racing. That rain turned near-perfect conditions into a treacherous skidpan, so a massive well done to all the competitors, especially the young Youth class riders, for quickly transferring over to their mud racing techniques to bring it home!

Frantic MX2 action from the opening moto

So, let’s start with that win for young Tyla Hooley in the Open class. Initially registered to compete in the MX2 title chase, major clutch issues with his KTM machine following the recent ACU British Championship round at Preston Docks and insufficient time to repair the damage and retest meant a last-minute decision to switch over to the 450F bike and contest the Open class instead. Jumping onto a bike he had only raced once previously, and which he generally uses for practice only, he gated 9th in the opening moto, eventually climbing up to 2nd behind current Champion James Dodd, who had led all the way. Also, inside the top ten in the opening race at Bevercotes were McKenzie Marshall, Will Hughes, Jayden Ashwell, Josh Waterman, Jaydon Murphy, new CPMX Racing signing Corey Hockey, Ryan Crowder making a very impressive return to Championship action and Tyron Cleaver.

Moto two and Hooley looking already dialled into his big KTM gated first, only for the race to be red flagged when Ashwell crashed very heavily on a downhill section. For the AJP rider it signalled the end of his racing weekend, battered and very bruised it meant a trip off to hospital for further examination, let’s hope Jayden is back in action soon! In the rerun, young Hooley quickly passed Dodd before racing to his maiden AMCA Championship win. Again, the rapid Marshall was right in the mix, scoring a very strong 3rd as Hughes passed Crowder on the final lap to earn 4th. Joining the top ten party on this occasion were Liam Gale, Callum Green and Ben White.

Jimmy Margetson leading a MX2 battle

After starting with those two strong 3rd placings, Marshall crashed on the opening lap of moto three, bending the handlebars of his Triumph in the process and being forced out of action. At the front, it was another win for Hooley, who, along with Dodd, simply cleared off, leaving Gale to bag a lonely 3rd spot. As Murphy took 4th, Crowder and Hockey battled it out for 5th. On the final lap, Hockey then slipped back to 7th when falling after trying a big inside pass on Crowder when entering a downhill corner, which meant that Hughes was also able to move up one place.

With conditions at their worst, FUS Marsh MX riders Dodd and Hughes both fell on the opening turn of the final moto as Mark Roberts made a dream start to lead the way. Quickly, though, that lad Hooley took control before racing onto victory and the overall verdict. Having a super ride , Roberts still got home in 2nd place with Gale again very impressive in 3rd. Despite that first turn off, Dodd then made a big recovery, eventually earning 4th with Jacob Bowden, Murphy, Crowder, Marshall, Waterman and Hughes rounding off the top ten.

MX2 winner Jayden Jones

There was plenty of drama at the start of the opening MX2 moto as defending Champion Henry Williams’ Honda ground to a halt early in the contest, and although he managed to briefly restart the bike, he then stopped for a second time. With the issues threatening to dent Henry’s early defence of his title, he was then handed a lifeline when the race had to be halted due to a red flag incident. In the restart, Harrison McCann was quickest away before Jayden Jones came through to take control. Being one of the most in-form, winning riders at present, there was only one outcome from here onwards as super Jayden controlled the contest all the way to the chequered flag. As early leader McCann dropped down to 11th, battles were simply raging everywhere inside the top ten. Riding on day one only, Howard Wainwright eventually took 2nd as Williams on his spare bike got home in 3rd, much to the relief of rider and team! Jimmy Margetson, Ray Rowson, Lee Truman, Luke Dean, Rory Jones and Domonic Newbury were next up. In the original running, Newbury, making his Holab Overflow Yamaha debut, was brought down and restarted a distant last, so 9th in the rerun was to be a very solid result!

Rory Jones chasing Lee Truman in a MX2 battle

Jake Parker was quickest away in the second MX2 clash before another very talented youngster, Finley Evans, then hit the front. For the next five circuits, Evans was in control, but all eyes were focused on the hard-charging Jayden Jones, who had moved from an early 6th up to 2nd. On lap seven, the very talented Wulfsport Meredith MX Rock Oil Suzuki rider became the leader of the pack before going on to score another win ahead of Evans, Williams, Dean, Margetson, Rory Jones and Rowson.

Despite still suffering from a shoulder ligament injury, Margetson, the double AMCA 125cc Champion, led moto three in MX2, but what a contest this was to be! Early on, Finley Evans crashed in the wave section and was forced out as a train consisting of Dean, Rowson, Jayden Jones, McCann, Williams, Newbury and Yarin Evans was really going for it in a no-holds-barred battle. Winning that fight was Jones cementing 2nd before he then found another turn of speed to catch and pass Margetson with just two laps remaining. At the flag, Williams was 3rd whilst Rory Jones had produced an eye-catching ride to come from 17th up to 8th.

Although the weekend had not started too well, reigning Champion Williams finished it in style, quickly moving past Yarin Evans to lead the final MX2 clash just about all the way. Once again, though, the MX2 action was epic, and despite the tricky going behind Williams, it was really going on as Evans, Rowson, Margetson, Dean, Jayden Jones, Dean, Rory Jones and Newbury had the throttle pinned in the search for a final moto big points haul. Having his best finish of the weekend, it was Rory Jones taking a richly deserved 2nd spot in this one from Jayden Jones, the eventual overall victor. On the evidence of the Bevercotes action, this class will simply thrill throughout the 2026 series!

125cc winner Lee Sealey leading runner-up Jordan Wright

Lee Sealey grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc moto of the series, only for the red flag to be raised due to a sticking start gate. In the rerun, Patrick Gilligan was fastest away, only for Sealey to come through. Five laps in, and there was to be another leader of the moto as this time, Ashley Harland hit the front. Remaining in control of proceedings, Harland then raced onto the win with LRT Racing Yamaha rider Jordan Wright taking 2nd with early leader Sealey having to settle for 3rd as Aaron Colley, Linc Hasted, Harvey Collins, Conner Challinor, Gilligan, Oakley Kettle and Luke Newman completed the top ten.

Colley then Harland led the second 125cc moto of the weekend, but any hopes that Harland held of recording another victory disappeared on the final lap of the contest when his machine seized. So, it was Colley on the Holab Overflow Yamaha taking the win whilst his teammate Charlie Palmer got in the points with a 9th place finish after suffering a turn one fall in the opening clash. Showing the importance of consistency in the early exchanges of a Championship campaign, most of the riders already mentioned were again right in the top end mix in moto two, along with Luke Phillips (4th) and Oakley Skinner (8th).

Close Vets action from Sean Smith (121) and Matt Ryder (91)

Working frantically and with generous help from fellow 125cc racer Patrick Gilligan, Harland worked overtime to fit a new cylinder head and piston and was ready to go racing again on day two. In Sunday’s first race, though, it was Sealey all the way, but Harland did grab 2nd from Wright, Colley, Skinner and Challinor. In the last clash of the weekend, Sealey was again the fastest away before being passed by Harland. Despite rain now falling and changing grip levels, Sealey fought back, but in a very tight finish, Harland just held on for a very narrow victory. With this class incorporating the 125cc Youth and scoring separately, it was a podium for Sealey, Wright and Harland in the main class as Skinner, Kettle, and Bobby Watson took home the Youth laurels. In all four motos at Bevercotes, the Youth top two of Skinner and Kettle were towards the top of the lap scoring charts, which bodes very well for the rest of the season.

Phil Mercer the Vets Over 50’s winner

Not to be outdone, the combined Vet’s and Women’s Championship motos produced plenty of stunning action also. Phil Mercer won three out of four of the clashes but was certainly made to work very hard! In both motos three and four, he had chased the fast Jamie Dobson all the way before making his move on the final lap of the contests. Phil’s only defeat of the weekend came in moto two when Dobson again grabbed the holeshot and this time led all the way, followed by Matt Ryder and James Lane with Mercer in 4th. Arguably, the most exciting contest, though, came in the third clash of the weekend when James Lane, Sam Callow, Lee Martin, Ryder, Aaron Crowder and John Butler were locked into a terrific battle just behind the front two of Dobson and Mercer.

Ria Truman the Women’s class winner

In the Women’s contest, Wildcard entry Ria Truman was super smooth and the leading lady home in the first three encounters before the form book changed in a wet, very tricky last moto. In that one, Holly Williams took the Ladies win from Caitlin Newman and Amber McGregor, the defending AMCA Women’s Champion, with Truman 4th. So, with four classes to be rewarded, it was a top three overall of Dobson, Lane and Martin (Vet’s O40’s), Mercer, Ryder and Crowder (Vet’s O50’s), Brian Staples, Daran Williams and Andrew Prosser (Vets O60’s) and Truman, Williams and Hannah Jones (Women).

Seniors Clubman winner George Clarke

In the combined Clubman Juniors/Seniors moto one, George Clarke was to lead all the way ahead of Max Monk, Charlie Ludwell, Callum Radford, Ricky Ryder and Leighton Price, the 2025 Clubman Juniors Champion. With Radford’s bike stopping in the early stages of moto two, Clarke was to score another big win ahead of Monk and Ludwell as Ryder got home 4th with Cameron Doleman 5th and Mackenzie Tranter 6th. Back under power, Radford briefly led moto three before that man Clarke came through. Initially hard-charging Monk had moved through to challenge the leader Clarke, only to fall on the final lap, dropping back to 4th as Ludwell took 2nd with Radford following his fast start, having to settle for 3rd. In the last moto, Radford fell on three occasions as Clarke finally tasted defeat. Leading all the way was Price with Monk 3rd, Ludwell 4th, Matthew Tranter 5th and Charlie Osborne 6th. In the overall stakes, it was a Seniors podium of Clarke, Monk and Ludwell with Bobby Turner, Matthew Tranter and Osborne on the Juniors box.

65cc Youth class winner Cohen Llewellyn

The final class for BW85cc, SW85cc and 65cc Youth riders saw appearances from Aaron Mercer, son of Phil Mercer and LJ Burton, son of former multi–Champion Luke Burton. For both lads, it was to be podium pie scoring great 2nd overall placings in their respective SW85cc and 65cc classes. In the BW85cc, Teddy Merriman took top slot with maximum points from Mason Brown and Will Kremer. In SW85cc, Logan Baker was also unbeaten as Reggie Cornell took 3rd. Completing the maximum theme, 65cc winner Cohen Llewellyn went through the card as Harlee Duffy finished 3rd overall to complete the podium.

Following this super opening round, it’s just two weeks until the Championship resumes at Bromsberrow.
