Searle & Adamson on a high! 2021 Michelin MX Nationals Round 3 – Race Report & Results

The Michelin MX Nationals set their round three stall out at a hot, humid and muggy Canada Heights in Kent at the weekend.

A few showers on Sunday made things tricky on a super tough track with quite a few red flags and injuries causing stoppages throughout the weekend. We wish all of the injured riders a speedy recovery.

Gathering to remember Steven Lenoir #685

A sickness bug was the biggest talking point in the Pro MX1 class, claiming both series leader Todd Kellett, who only finished only one moto on Saturday and the Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha Harri Kullas who dragged himself out of bed to tough it out for two fourths on Sunday which now gives him the championship lead, four points over Kellett.

The round honours though went the way of the Crendon Fastrack Honda rider Tommy Searle who took the chequers in the second and third motos. Moto won was won by the Verde Substance KTM of Jake Millward with Searle being held back after crashing with his returning team mate Jake Nicholls who himself had a solid weekend.  The Par Homes Husqvarna duo of Josh Gilbert and Evgeny Bobrychev were also in the mix going one-two in the final moto of the weekend.  When the points were counted though it was Searle on the top step of the podium flanked by Nicholls and Gilbert.

Asa United Gas Gas’s Steven Clarke pulled the pin in the opening MX2 moto pulling off a great victory followed home by the Gabriel Insulations KTM of John Adamson and the Par Homes Husqvarna of Florian Miot.  The aforementioned Adamson and Miot would claim the rest of the moto victories with Adamson notching the overall with 2 race wins to Miot’s two with the Frenchman nailing second overall.

Barring a first race crash which dented his scoring, Crendon Fastrack Honda’s Jay Hague had an excellent weekend to finish on the box in third. Jamie Carpenter on the Crescent Yamaha suffered from poor starts but would work his way through the field in each moto for fourth overall.  Michael Ellis continues to build up his speed and strength after his layoff and finished fifth ahead of the Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki of Carlton Husband who is riding through the pain barrier with an injured shoulder.

Adamson now tops the standings 15 points ahead of Husband with Carpenter three points further back in third.

Cole McCullough added another four points onto his series lead with another dominant performance with three race wins and the overall in the Small Wheel 85’s. His main rival Chester Hyde took advantage of a crash by Cole in moto one to take the chequers finishing second overall and keeping it tight at the top just 12 off of the leader. Gus Mustoe pitched in with four solid motos for third overall.

In the Big Wheel 85’s Billy Askew was on a mission and his fightback after a fall in moto one was a sight to behold, just managing to grab the win on the last lap.  Just like his brother Gus, Ben Mustoe fired in four great moto finishes for second overall with moto four victor Tyla Hooley third. Askew now holds a 32 point lead over Mustoe in the standings.

Wildcard Jak Taylor came saw and conquered in the MXY2 125’s, taking advantage of a poor third ride for triple moto winner Charlie Heyman.  George Hopkins made his first trip to the MX Nationals box with a superb third overall. Heyman though is still in the driving seat to add the 125 title to last years Big Wheel 85 championship, leading Raife Broadley by 44 points.

Alfie Jones was again in a determined mood in the MXY2 250’s rattling off three moto wins & the overall, though a crash in the final race saw Jude Morris come to the party after an indifferent Saturday and steal the chequers. Sam Atkinson edged out Ben Clark for the number two spot courtesy of beating his rival in the last moto after they tied for points. In the series standings Jones holds the cards with a 12 point gap on Clark.

Matthew Pocock claimed his first-ever MX Nationals win on Saturday in the Clubman MX1 class, backing it up with another straight afterwards make it a memorable Saturday for the youngest member of the Pocock clan. Ivan Kerr came into the round with a 7 point lead on Alex Christopher in the series and he left with that advantage intact as they tied for points with Kerr getting the nod for second.

Another rider to bag his first-ever win in Clubman MX2 was Charlie West who has rode in the series since the early days, so he thoroughly deserved his piece of the glory.  Although Charlie would notch another chequered flag in the final moto it was Jake Taylor who would take the overall with a more consistent set of motos with West second and Guy Prince third.  Prince now heads the championship, ten points to the good on Ben Wainwright who had an indifferent weekend with Elliott Pugh still in the running a further 1o points back.

Harry Bradley made his first 2021 appearance in the Amateur MX1 championship class, gelling with the track and winning three moto’s to notch the overall ahead of series leader Sean Wainwright with Brad Thornhill keeping David Rushton and Callum Gordon at bay for the final podium position. With a 42 point lead over John Kirk, Wainwright needs to keep churning out the points to claim the title.

The Amateur MX2 class was the Shaun Springer and Aaron Ongley show giving their local fans something to shout about as they duked it out for honours.  Springer held the bragging rights on Saturday, but not to be defeated Ongley, came back strong on Sunday and inflicted his first ever defeats over his rival at the Canada Heights circuit by winning both moto’s.  At the end of the weekend though it was Springer, Ongley and Dan Brough on the box with Brough now 18 points behind Springer in the chase for the title.

Scottish racer Ben Edwards onboard his Carnegie Fuels KTM was in superb form in Expert MX1.  Team Green Kawasaki’s Joe Clayton was the only rider to get near him and would bang home a great race two win for second overall behind Edwards with Richard Bird third. Edwards now has a colossal 82 lead over Bird in the standings.

In the Expert MX2 class Bobby Bruce onboard his ASA United Gas Gas 125 fired home three wins to take the honours over Ollie Beamish who was consistent throughout with Tom Murphy third. Series leader Cullen Scott would crash out and will miss the remainder of the championship. We wish Cullen a speedy recovery.

The championship heads down to Cornwall and Landrake for round four of the series on the 14th and 15th August.
