Sacha Coenen produced a sensational display to claim his first overall Pro Motocross victory at the Southwick National, but the Belgian’s celebrations were tempered after suffering a shoulder injury in the closing stages of the second moto.
The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider dominated both motos at the iconic sand circuit to secure a flawless 1-1 scorecard at Round 23 of the Monster Energy SuperMotocross World Championship. Despite crashing heavily late in Moto 2, Coenen remounted to complete the race without goggles and seal victory in just his second appearance in the American outdoor series.

Behind the MX2 World Championship leader, Levi Kitchen returned to the overall podium with second, while New Zealand’s Cole Davies overcame a Moto 1 crash to finish third overall and, with Jo Shimoda sidelined through injury, leave Southwick with the championship red plate.
Australian youngster Kayden Minear continued his impressive rookie campaign by finishing fourth overall after claiming a career-best third in the second moto, while Julien Beaumer completed the top five. Chance Hymas finished sixth overall after running inside the top three for much of the opening moto before slipping back, with Nate Thrasher, Francisco Garcia, Carson Mumford and Michael Mosiman rounding out the top ten.

The championship picture also changed dramatically before the racing had even begun. Qualifying saw red plate holder Jo Shimoda suffer a fractured collarbone and mild concussion in a crash, forcing the Honda rider to withdraw from the event and surrender the championship lead.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager Ian Harrison confirmed after the race that Coenen would undergo further medical checks after battling through injury to complete the event.
“It’s an unfortunate end to an incredible performance from Sacha today. He banged up his shoulder and will seek medical attention to determine the extent of the injury. We’re proud of his effort today and wish him the best as they return overseas.”
Coenen was unavailable for media duties following the race.
Levi Kitchen was pleased to return to the podium after missing out over the previous two rounds.
“I needed a day like today, but it kicked my ass. I need to go back to work and keep trying to get better. I’m looking forward to next weekend and will try to keep it going.”

Cole Davies admitted it had been an eventful afternoon but was delighted to leave Southwick leading the championship for the first time.
“Up and down day but I’m looking at the positives. My starts are unreal right now and I’m riding good. We’ve got the points lead so I’m stoked. Like I said, up and down day, but I’m happy where I’m at.”
The Pro Motocross Championship now heads to the FXR Spring Creek National on Saturday, 18th July.
