Jubilant Jayden wins big at Drayton! 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship Round 4 - Race Report & Results

With the weather forecast being wildly incorrect and no expected rain falling during the race weekend of the 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship round 4 held at Lower Drayton, the organising Cannock MXC certainly had to be flexible and very proactive in their track preparation! And, they certainly got it right with the soft, loamy soil which prevails at Lower Drayton being in prime condition before, as expected, becoming brutal and rough! Despite the eventual tough going, though, the action was again highly competitive as the finish line in the title hunt is now appearing just over the horizon!

Race Report and Images by Mike Wood

The combined Open/MX2 class has already produced plenty of thrilling racing this season, and the first moto of round 4 certainly lived up to its billing! Will Hughes, Jayden Ashwell and finally James Dodd all led it. As Dodd added another 25 points to his Open Championship tally with Ashwell in 2nd, those very fast MX2 pilots Henry Williams and Josh Waterman both eventually overhauled Hughes as Luke Dean, Luke Meredith, Ed Briscoe, Jayden Jones, and Yarin Evans rounded off the top ten. As Doddy then took Moto Two from gate to flag ahead of Ashwell, the battle for 3rd was simply red-hot as Waterman saw off the hard-riding Jayden Jones and Hughes. With the very consistent Meredith 6th, this moto did not go to plan for MX2 series leader Williams. Catching his Honda’s footpeg in some rogue chestnut paling fencing, Henry crashed and remounted in 12th, he recovered to 8th, just failing to pull off a late pass on Dean.

Bouncing back in style, Henry won moto three on Sunday, narrowly ahead of his title rival Waterman, with Ashwell 3rd from Dodd, Hughes, Dean and Jones. In the last clash of the weekend, Ashwell scored a big victory, and that meant that the AJP rider, after being on the podium in the opening three rounds, now earned his first overall verdict of the series after finishing level on 94 points with Dodd. Williams was the leading MX2 rider home in the final clash with that man Waterman again on his tail. This result proved equally crucial for Henry as it meant that he had claimed the MX2 overall verdict after the FUS Marsh Honda rider had finished the meeting level on 91 points with Waterman. After feeling unwell in the days before the event, this was a very big performance by the CPMX Racing KTM pilot!

Doing it in style and making it a memorable weekend for the AJP team, Jimmy Margetson, series leader in the AMCA 125cc class, won all four motos at Lower Drayton. In the opener, the classy Margetson was followed home by Aaron Colley, Luke Newman and Wyatt McGregor, with Woz Boyce being the first AMCA 125cc Youth class rider home in a great 5th. For 125cc Youth series leader Ollie Jewitt, the weekend did not start too well, struggling with mechanical issues, he did, though, still get home in 8th during the opening moto. Also starting well and putting some useful points on the board were Mason Care, Linc Hasted, Ted Bullen and Daniel Sheppard.

125cc moto two saw series contender McGregor right down in a lowly 23rd place early on as he also became a victim of that rogue chestnut paling that had impeded MX2 ace Henry Williams! Brilliantly, though, the Midwest Racing youngster stormed back to earn 11th as Colley again chased Margetson home at the front of proceedings. In this one, Luke Phillips, Bobby Watson and Oliver Bebb bagged top ten placings.

Wyatt McGregor leading a 125cc battle

Day two and the 125cc contest followed very much the same pattern, with Margetson in complete control ahead of Colley and all of the above names. On the podiums, it was Margetson, Colley and birthday boy Newman in the main class, whilst over in the 125cc Youth, Woz Boyce took a well-deserved top spot from Hasted and Jewitt. That win for Boyce has also seen him dramatically close the gap on series leader Jewitt.

Warming up for the EMX Youth Championship in the Czech Republic this week, fast J.L Cox Crane hire 85cc pilot Olly Waters took out a wildcard at Lower Drayton. Racing on day one only, he blasted to a brace of wins with fellow wildcard Elvis Totney in 2nd. The first moto of the weekend saw Junior Carroll, Stanley Siebert, Tyler Shaw, Oaklan Winnall, Archie Humphrey, Finn Fitzgerald and SW85cc series leader Freddie Smith all posting top ten placings.

On day two, Totney and Siebert both scored moto wins with all of the above-mentioned lads right in the thick of the action. In the overall standings, Totney took top spot in the BW85cc class from Siebert the series leader, Carroll, Shaw, Winnall and Smout. Over in the SW85cc series, leader Freddie Smith further stretched his advantage at the top with another overall victory, joined on the podium by Connor Johnston and Sebastian Perrins-Talbot.

Wildcard rider Libby Chatburn was in simply irresistible form in the Lower Drayton Women’s Championship class. The only occasion anyone got their wheels ahead of Libby came in the final moto when Caitlin Newman led the way for a couple of laps. With Libby taking all of the wins, eventual runner-up Holly Williams had to certainly work harder for her points, producing some very gutsy performances typified by her moto two ride! In that one, after colliding with Hannah Jones on the opening lap, Holly then stormed back from a distant last place right back to 4th and just behind Amber McGregor and Erin Howes. For series leader McGregor, it was another strong, productive weekend picking up a 3/2/4/6 scorecard enough to also get on the podium in 3rd overall as Howes, Hannah Jones, Newman, Jaymee Garrood and Sophie Jones were next up. Lexi Emery, the sole Women’s Youth rider, also gave a great account of herself, continually mixing it with the big girls!

Holly Williams(98) the Women’s runner up

Taking out a wildcard, Phil Mercer on his FUS Marsh Honda was in brilliant form in the Lower Drayton Vets racing. Winning all four motos, Phil though, did not have it totally all his own way as Jamie Dobson, in particular, certainly had his gating gloves on! Dobson led all three of the opening motos, whilst Simon Lane was the holeshot king in the last one. Phil Mercer is still a class act and showed great composure in calculating the correct point in each moto to pass his rivals and hit the front!

Libby Chatburn the Women’s winner at Lower Drayton

Just like the previous round at Brookthorpe, the Vets action all weekend was very interesting with James Lane, Sam Callow, Rich Meakin, Dain Traylor and Matthew Chaplin all playing their part and always being at the business end of proceedings! In the Over 40’s series, leader James Lane was to take another big overall verdict, thus further increasing his advantage over Dobson. Although Mercer was the Over 50’s winner, Simon Lane took 2nd and just like his brother, he too has increased his own title chasing lead. In the Over 60’s, pacesetter in the title race, Brian Staples, was away racing in the ACU Vets Championship, but his closest rival in the AMCA series, Paul Blick, only competed on day one, so there’s no change at the top in that one!

The Clubman’s combined Seniors/Juniors contest was all about a couple of wildcards at Lower Drayton. The very fast Ashton Phillips stormed to victory in the opening two moto’s with Jack Waterman chasing. On day two, with Phillips deciding to contest the big Open/MX2 class motos instead, Waterman took over to bag a brace of race wins and thus also the overall Seniors victory ahead of Daniel Jones and Kurt Burton. Series leader of the Clubman Seniors, Michael Harbage, enjoyed another very solid scoring weekend in 4th overall with Ricky Ryder, Louis Tilley and Billy McGillivary next up.

Leighton Price the Clubmans Juniors winner

Clubman’s Juniors Championship leader Leighton Price also had a very productive weekend at Lower Drayton, taking the overall win and dramatically increasing his advantage at the top. Starting with a very strong 3rd placing, Leighton was always right in the mix at the top end of the action and looks odds-on to go on to be crowned Champion in this class. At Lower Drayton, Matthew Limer and Kyle Bowden joined him on the Clubman’s Juniors podium.
