Grimshaw & Kullas on top at Landrake! 2022 MX Nationals Championship Round 2 – Race Report & Results

Two very different weather days tested the Michelin MX Nationals, powered by Milwaukee, team to the maximum last weekend at round two of the series. But once again, hard work and good organisation produced another great meeting with larger crowds of spectators that have never been seen at this venue before.

On Saturday, the sun shone on and off all day, making the hilly Landrake track just over the Devon border in Cornwall hard and dusty in places. Unfortunately, overnight it started to rain, which then turned to drizzle by morning, and that carried on all Sunday till just after racing had finished for the day.

There was a few fallers on the first corner which included John Adamson, Jake Millward and Jamie Carpenter

The smooth-riding Harri Kullas and his Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha were in their element on Sunday as he won the first muddy and slippery Leatt Pro MX1 race with ease and then backed that up with a comfortable and safe second place in race two.

But, while Kullas was winning the Leatt Pro MX1 part of the combined pro MX1 and MX2 race, we had a new winner in the Apico Pro-MX2s as Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Gas Gas) with a win, and a second-place scored his first-ever national overall win.

Kullas got the holeshot at the start of the first combined pro race from Tommy Searle (Crendon Fastrack Honda), Gosh Gilbert (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Glenn McCormick (Chambers Husqvarna) and Dan Thornhill (Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha). Thornhill was making a return to racing from a shoulder injury.

With Landrake’s uphill start and with the slippery conditions, the MX2 riders were at a disadvantage at the start as the bigger bike powered away.

Josh Gilbert on home soil won the second Pro MX1 race

Carlton Husband (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki) was the first of the MX2s in ninth place, with Rossi Beard (Lexa MX KTM), Steve Clarke (Crendon Fastrack Honda) and Grimshaw all in his wheel tracks. But as the riders disappeared around the opening lap Jake Millward (Verde Shiloh KTM), Jason Meara (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki) and Jamie Carpenter (GRT KTM) were in a bit heap in turn one. All riders got up and continued with the race, but later, when Carpenter finished the race, his injuries were more severe than he first thought, and he was rushed to hospital and will be out of racing for a time.

Tommy Searle pressured Gilbert in the closing stages until on the last lap when Gilbert left the door open entering one of the table tops and Searle pounced on the chance and went through

Meanwhile, back at the front, as Kullas stretched out a lead Gilbert passed Searle for second place at the end of lap one and started to open up a bit of gap.

Stuart Edmonds (Apico Husqvarna) must have found the conditions to his liking as he gated eighth but soon passed his teammate Martin Barr, Brad Todd (Gabriel KTM), Thornhill and McCormick and then slotted into fourth place, which is where he finished the race.

On the MX2 side of things, the fast-starting Husband was slipping back into the pack as first Steven Clarke, and then Grimshaw passed him. Jay Hague (Crendon Fastrack Honda) had started his race in sixteenth but made his way to tenth before slipping back to fourteenth place in the trying conditions.

As the race came to a close, and while Kullas stretched his lead, Searle upped his pace and closed in on second place man Gilbert and, in a last-lap do or die move, snatched second away from him on the last lap.

Overall, in the MX1s, it was Kullas by over twelve seconds from Searle and Gilbert who crossed the finish line side by side. Edmonds was on his own in fourth with his teammate Barr fifth.

On the MX2 side of things, Grimshaw finished eleventh on the track but first of the MX2 riders and was over ten seconds clear of second-place man Hague. Florien Miot (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) was a distant third from Husband, the last rider on the lead lap. The injured Carpenter was fifth.

Gilbert got the holeshot at the start of race two from Edmunds, Kullas, Law, Barr and McCormick, with Searle in seventh place and Clarke, the first of the MX2s, one place behind Searle. Kullas had passed Edmunds for second place by the end of the first lap, and Law slipped down to eighth place. Clarke crashed down to thirteenth place and pulled out of the race three laps later.

Harri Kullas was in top form in the tricky conditions

Searle was on the move, and as the race was four laps old, he was in fourth place, which was where he finished as the top three of Gilbert Kullas, and Edmunds remained in the order.

No 301 Shaun Southgate and No 57 Richard Bird battling it out in the Expert MX1 Championship

Miot crossed the finish line in sixth from ninth at the start but was the first MX2 rider home. Grimshaw was within two seconds of him as he held off repeated challenges for his second MX2 rider from a charging Hague. Law ended his race in fourth place, with Calum Mitchell (Fabrican KTM) fifth.

Overall, in the MX1s, it was Kullas from Gilbert, Searle, and Edmunds, while in the MX2s, it was Grimshaw from Miot and Hague with Husband just missing out on a podium position.

Charlie Putnam gave his all on both days and was rewarded with the overall in the Expert MX1 class

With a win and three strong finishes, Charlie Putnam (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) won the expert RFX MX1s with Jaydon Ashwell (AJP Gas Gas), who seemed to like the trying conditions of day two as he won both races, giving him second overall. James Dodd was third, with race two winner Shaun Southgate (Herts MX Honda) missing out on a podium finish.

Louie Kessell was consistant on both days and took the Expert MX2 class overall

Louie Kessell (Honda) won the first three of his four races over the weekend, but a not so good start in his last race meant he had to settle for second in the race but still gave him the overall expert RFX MX2 win. Josh Coleman (Holeshot KTM) didn’t finish out of the top four all weekend for second overall, with Jack Lindsay (Apico Husqvarna) third and race four winner Aaron Ongley (723 Racebike KTM) missing out on a top three.

Expert start

With a win, two second places and a third, Billy Wynn won the Motoverde Amateur MX1 overall as three-race winner Harry Bradley crashed out a fourth place in his third race and finished thirty third. Ross Millard was third overall.

Harry Bradley won three of the four Amateur MX1 races but went down in the third race

Dan Brough (Rutzz.co.uk Husqvarna) finished second to Luca Pegg (Yamaha) in the first of the Motoverde Amateur MX2 races but then went on to win the next three races for the overall. Pegg backed up his win by finishing in the top five for second overall, with Lewis King-London (Streamteck Honda) third.

Mitch Best (Blackphone Honda) was unbeaten in the Worx Financial Clubman MX1, taking four wins from four starts. Conner Baldry (KTM) chassed him over the finish line on three out of the four occasions for second overall, with Billy Saunders (WMS Honda) third.
Richy Roberts (Rutzz Racing Husqvarna) didn’t finish out of the top three on his way to winning the Moto Connection Clubman MX2 overall from Charlie West (Gas Gas) and Matthew Pocock (Yamaha).

With three wins and a second-place wildcard, Tyler Westcott won the 250F side of the combined Seven MXY2 and MXY125 overall from race three winner Jak Taylor (Team Green Kawasaki), with another wildcard rider, Ben Zeale, third.

Charlie Heyman was in command in the MXY1 class

There was no stopping Charlie Heyman (SJP Moto KTM) in the Seven MXY125 side of the race as he won all four of his races. Joe Brooks (GRT KTM) followed Hayman over the finish line in every race, with Ollie Colmer (GRT KTM) third in each race.

It was tight at the top of the Syntol big wheel side of the combined 85cc races as only two points separated the overall winner Jake Walker (Gas Gas) from runner up Billy Askew (GRT KTM). Josh Vail (SJP Husqvarna) was third overall, just one point behind Askew for the closest finish of the weekend.

Billy Askew won both Big Wheel 85 races on the Saturday

Archie-Jay Girdham (SJP Husqvarna) dominated the Syntol small wheel side of the races with four wins from four starts. Hayden Statt (Manchester MC KTM) was second, with Blake Ward-Clarke (JMR KTM) third.

Round three will be the weekend of the 29th and 30th of May at Lyng in Norfolk, which is a sandy natural track with an extensive history.
