Double top for Ogden! Toughsheet National Twinshock Championships Round 3 – Race Report & Results

What a weekend the Nottingham Twinshock Club gave us at Bevercotes on Sunday for the third round of the Toughsheet National
Twinshock Championships, supported by Julian Dobb from Dobshox. The hillside track had been watered for two days before the event, and needed more after the first block, but from riders comments it was then the ‘best they had ever seen it’ and produced some of the fastest racing the series had ever witnessed. The full track was in use and included the long sweeping loop which the entry of well over 200 seemed to love.

The Vets Modern Over 40’s were first to the line, and a good start meant all the difference, and it was Julian Freeberne who took the bull by the horns winning two from three to take overall victory. Simon Bonser won race two, which helped give him second overall, then only one point separated the next three riders, with Adam Wilkinson third, Chris Hind was fourth on a tie break with John Butler, who had a couple of second places.

The Vets Modern Over 50’s saw some of the best racing with the top five riders battling closely in each race. Ewan Johnston took two
holeshots but was gobbled up by the speed of Danny Blakeley and Jonno White. Danny took the overall courtesy of two wins ahead of
Jonno in races one and two. Then in the third race Paul Coward got to the front and stayed there for the duration to take a well-deserved win from Steve Ward in second, after both Jonno and Danny had falls.

The Wulfsport Experts Twinshocks ran together with the Inters and 250’s and there was disappointment for series leader Brad O’Leary at thestart of race one as he got to the line and had a rear wheel puncture. Michael Ogden took full advantage as he scorched to victory after a good battle with Ryan Ireland. Brad made no mistake in the next two races though as he reeled off two fine wins. Ogden eventually took the overall, by just four points from Ireland, with Michael Smith just a further two points behind in third and Sam Vickers fourth.

Chris Rogerson continued his fine form in the Intermediates Twinshock class, and his race one win helped him to the top step of the podium. Second place went to Ian Pycock, who was back after seven years away from the sport, and Mark Brockhurst took third with two wins and an unlucky DNF in race one which dashed his hopes of victory. Chris Anderton just got the better of his teammate Steve Morgan for fourth.

Oliver Dodders leads the way in the 250 Twinshock class winning two races and took the overall from Jack Mason who won race one. Matt Bennett with three thirds completed the podium.

Jamie Mason had a clean sweep of wins in the Clubman Twinshock class, with series leader Craig Ruck in second, and the two riders are only now separated by a single point in the series. Dave Lightbown had some great rides to take third from Andy Wimpenny and James Fugett.

Kris Winder and Matt Rudd had some tremendous battles in the 125 Twinshock class, swapping places throughout each race, but it was Winder who continued to dominate the class, eventually taking all three wins from Rudd in second. Mark Burrows took third, just in front of Robin Cowgill. The Pre 83 winner was Brandon Brockley.

Andy Lawton and Damo Strydom gave the crowd some fantastic racing in the Super Evo 125 class, and it was probably Lawtons extremely fast starts which gave him the advantage. After two races they had both gone 1-2, so it was all on the final race to see who took the victory, and it was Lawton who won after Damo hit problems and could only manage fifth in the final showdown. Lee Holland tried to hang on to the leaders, and took third from Charlie Silvester, who had his best result to date.

John Butler came out in the Evo 125 class, and looked to really enjoy the experience, taking two wins and a second for the top step of the Podium. Richard Mason pushed hard and took second, with Corey Nemeth the third race winner in third, and Jim Scrafton in fourth.

Michael Ogden was also racing the Evo Open class and took three wins from Joe Harper and Sam Pocock. Michael was awarded the Martindales Rider of the Meeting award for his efforts.

In the Super Evo Open class Lewis Parkinson had to work hard, but got his Honda singing and managed all three wins, and now leads the
Series. Callum Bircher had a great day and holeshot the races but had to settle for second behind Lewis. Lee Larkin was third on a tie break from Frazer Hatch.

Willie Burgess continued his dominance of the Over 50 Twinshock class with three flawless victories, but Jim Shand is getting closer and again, took second overall. David Hopkins has also got the bit between his teeth and was third in each moto. Sean Dodders took his Suzuki to fourth in front of Pete Williamson.

Evergreen Pete Mathia took another overall win in the Over 60’s to add to his tally, but a fall in race three just blemished his run of wins.

It was nice to see Alan Bott back on track after his operation, and he rode well for second, with race three winner Chris Rogerson in third and Andy Holland fourth.

The next round is at Pontrilas on July16/17, and round five is to be at a new venue as Bassenthwaite may be unavailable this year.
