Bonser weekend for Simon! 2023 Acerbis Amateur Nationals Round 3 – Race Report & Results

Hawkstone Park in Shropshire was the place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend as the sun was shining for the Acerbis Amateur National series rolling into town for round 3 of the season.

The MX Dreams California Open 2 stroke category was first up to hit the perfectly prepared circuit and fresh after his top 10 at the British Championship a few weeks ago Josh Spinks continued his run of winning 100% of the overalls this season as he took 4 wins and a second for the top step at Hawkstone ahead of former Weston Beach Race winner Ashley Greedy, who tied on points for the runner up with Rory Jones but Greedy got the nod by way of the final race result. Jones had to settle for third while Lewis Hall took home fourth.

In the Moto Connection 125 2 stroke class former series champion Jimmy Margetson had a ride out as a wildcard and dominated the weekend taking all five race victories on his GasGas. Damon Strydom was runner up on the day but will have taken the points lead as Chris Povey one of his closest competitors finished third overall but 25 points further back. Ash Harland recovered from a big get off in moto 2 to take home fourth and Nev Bradshaw rounded out the top five even after a DNF in race 3.

Lee Sealey is starting to prove himself as one of the top men in the Craigs Motorcycles sponsored MX2 class as he continued on his run of form taking the top step of the podium with a 1-1-5-1-2 scorecard aboard his Kawasaki from runner up Alfie Calvert who is coming closer and closer to grabbing his first MX2 victory. Jake Winnard came into the weekend as series leader and took home third overall from Hawkstone ahead of Myles Reid and first round winner Mitchell Meadows.

Reigning Acerbis MX1 champion Jack Beniston was the eventual overall winner taking three wins,a second and a third doing his championship campaign no harm whilst also capitalising on points leader James Hutchinson’s fourth race problems. Jayden Ashwell was a wildcard and took a moto win on his way to finishing second overall just 2 points ahead of AMCA MX1 regular and final race winner Luke Burton. Andy Wilson and Luke Meredith rounded out the top 5.

In the Manchester Xtreme Junior Open category points leader Riley Voase claimed his third overall win of the season taking three wins backed up by a second and a third to extend his lead at the top of the championship. Wildcard rider Lewis Griffin claimed a moto win on his way to runner up overall just two points behind young Voase while James Newby picked up his first race victory of the season aboard his Kawasaki which helped him to third overall when all was said and done. Ben Hughes and Stefan Robson finished in fourth and fifth places respectively.

In the Motoverde Ladies class the wins and second places were shared between defending champ Grace Richards and young Scottish pilot Elaine MacEachern. The verdict was decided on a final moto result as the pair both had two wins and two seconds apiece meaning it was a winner takes all brawl in the final encounter. Richards came out on top of that dual and stood on the top step from MacEachern who had to ultimately settle for the runner up spot. Rebecca Newham had a consistent weekend and took third overall ahead of Grace Packman who fended off former champion Nadiya Jones to fourth overall by just two points.

Ryan Voase continued on with his 100% win record in the LS2 Helmets Vets Over 40 category as he proved once again nobody could stop him on his way to another overall victory. Danny Tollett was best of the rest and stood on the second step of the rostrum beating Adam Wilkinson by a mere 2 points after the pair went into the final race tied. 2022 champion Lee Martin took home fourth just a further couple of points back while Paul Johnston pulled back some points after a race two DNF cost him an almost certain second overall in the end having to settle for fifth.

In the Roberts Plant Engineers Vets Over 50 class it was Simon Bonsor, who after some tough fights through the pack, managed to go ahead and claim a maximum points haul and add to his series lead. A pair of cumbrians followed the GasGas man home as fast starting Richard Miller put up a solid effort and made it hard work for Bonsor but had to settle for a bag full of runner up spots in the end and Ewan Johnston recovered from a big crash over the bars in the third encounter to salvage third overall. Chris Elcock was just a couple of points behind in fourth and Geoffrey Wharton took home fifth.

The next round of the series heads up north for a seaside trip to Haverigg in Cumbria.
