Westcott runs wild at Whiteway! SWOR Motocross Championship Round 2 – Race Report & Results

Last Sunday, May 9th round two of the South West Off Road (Swor) Championships took place at Whiteway Barton in Devon and as with other meetings across the country restrictions were still in place and no spectators could attend. A lot of rain had fallen overnight which made things a bit sloppy in places in practice and the track became incredibly challenging and a bit one liney as the day progressed but was still to produce some good racing.

Report and Images by Dave Rich

In the Expert class, there was a good line with a few wildcards, and it was wildcard Tyler Westcott who had notched up the fastest time in qualifying, but it was not the best of starts for him nor Rob Cross who was well down the field.

Fellow wildcard George Hopkins was to lead the way early doors from Ross Kersey with Kersey taking the lead midrace, but back came Hopkins to regain the lead until Hopkins made a mistake and dropped down the field. Wayne Shimell had been in third before he was passed by Westcott and then Cross who was on a mission and soon found a way past Westcott and was now closing on Kersey at the front and was to put Kersey under huge pressure on the last lap, but Kersey held his nerve to take the win with Cross just half a second behind taking second and Westcott taking third.

Ross Kersey heads the second expert race

In the second race, it was Kersey with a blistering start from Westcott and these two were soon to ease away at the front before Kersey went down and it was Westcott who took over until the race was stopped and had to be restarted and again it was Kersey with the best start from Westcott and leapey Leigh Williams with Williams soon to be passed by both Cross and Shimell. Westcott managed to pass Kersey on lap 2 and with a clear track soon pulled away at the front, but the real battle was for third between Cross and Shimell with Shimell getting the better of Cross mid-race, but Cross came on strong in the closing stages and took Shimell and was to catch and pass Kersey on the last lap to take second behind Westcott who took a comfortable win.

In the last race, it was Jordan Gosling who headed the pack from Kersey and Westcott with Westcott soon to be leading as both Gosling and Kersey made mistakes on the opening lap. Westcott had a clear track in front of him and was to extend his lead every lap from Shimell and Hopkins, but a mistake dropped Hopkins down the field, and it was Harvey James who moved up in to third but there was only one winner and that was Westcott which also gave him the overall with Shimell a distant second and James third.

In the Junior Open Championship, there was some good racing as in the opening race it was Dan Merrifield who led early on and was chased down by Harry Burton who took over the lead on lap 3 and was easing away but he went down a lap later when his front wheel washed out and it was Zak Moore who took over at the front. Burton had re-joined back in fourth and was soon on it again and was to move up into second on the last lap and was looking to get past Moore with literally a handful of corners remaining to which he did to take his first race win in the Championship, Moore took second with Andy Gibbons a well-deserved third.

Race 2 and it was a disastrous start for race one winner Burton as he got stuck behind his gate and it was Nick Grenney with the holeshot in this one from Gibbons and Scott Taylor, but by the end of the opening lap, it had all changed as it was Tyler Sterry who led from Gibbons and Taylor. Gibbons was all over Sterry and took the lead on lap 3 and from there went on untroubled to take the chequered flag from Sterry with Glen Harding getting the better of Moore on the last lap to take third.

In the last race, it was Merrifield again at the front with the first two race winners Burton and Gibbons there in second and third respectively giving chase. Burton took over the lead on the opening lap and Gibbons also passed Merrifield and was in second. Burton started to get away at the front and Moore was to move up into third after passing Merrifield. Gibbons was too close on Burton towards the end of the race, but it was to no avail as Burton took his second race win with Moore coming through to take third, but with Gibbons finishing in second he was to take the overall.

Harry Burton notched up two race wins in the Junior Open Championship

The Junior Elite Championship Class it was Paul Ford who led the opening race, but only for the first lap as a mistake cost him and it was Will Matthews who took over at the front and never looked back and took the chequered flag with Gavin Lindsey taking second and Sam Napier after a disastrous start back in twenty third coming through to get the better of Richard Holmes on the last lap.

In race 2 it was Chris Jerwood from Lindsey with Matthews in third, but a mistake on the opening lap saw Matthews drop out of the top twenty. Jerwood and Lindsey were soon put under pressure from Holmes who took the lead on lap 2 with Moss Macriner also moving up into second with Paul Rowe a lap later now in third who was soon closing in on Macriner which turned in to a real battle in the closing stages, Holmes took the win with Macriner just holding off Rowe for second.

In the last race, it was Ford who headed the pack for the first lap before being passed by Holmes on lap 2 and once he hit the front, he went on to take the win from Ford with Rowe again taking third.

Ben Mustoe won all three inter 85 youth races

The Inter 85 Youth Class saw a dominant display of riding from Ben Mustoe. Ben led the opening race from the off and stormed away to take a comfortable win from Freddie Gardiner and Gus Mustoe with all three riders lapping the rest of the field.

The second moto saw Gus lead from the off and was pressured by Gardiner straight away on the opening lap and did touch going into a lefthander with Gardiner going off track which dropped him down the field a bit, but up into second was now Ben who was all over Gus and was to pass Gus before the end of the opening lap and just as he did in the opening race gradually eased away and took another win from Gus with Gardiner this time taking third.

The last race saw Gus again with the early lead from Ben with Danny Flude tucked in third just ahead of Gardiner, but Gardiner was to make a mistake on the opening lap and dropped back to seventh. Ben got the better of Gus towards the end of the opening lap and with a clear track in front of him he went on to make it a hat-trick of wins with Gus again second and Gardiner after his earlier mistake coming back to pass Flude to take third.

Brandon Eva took the overall in the support class

In the Senior Championship Class there was some real close racing as in the opening race it was Jason Worth who led for most of the race before losing the lead to Jacob Randall on the penultimate lap but Worth came back to pass Randall on the last lap to take the win with Ashley Locke taking third.

The second moto saw a close conflict between Dave Colton and Worth with Worth who had lost the lead to Colton on the opening lap regaining the lead on lap 4 and from there went on to take the win from Owen Richards who got past Colton who eventually came home in third. In the last race, Worth did not get the best of starts and had it all to do, but a man that was on a mission in this one was Randall who from being mid-pack on the opening lap was up into second by the end of lap 4 behind Richards who he got pass to take the lead a lap later and from there went on to take the win with Locke third ahead of Worth who took fourth and with it took the overall.

In the Support Class, there was a win for Sam Morcom in the opening race over Brandon Eva who thought his way back from a second lap spill, but in the other two races, there were no mistakes from Eva who led from the off in both races to take the chequered flag and with it took the overall.
