Reigning Champions Team Australia dominated the qualifying day for the 2025 Motocross of Nations in Ironman with brother Jett and Hunter Lawrence taking the MXGP and Open race victories in superb style, while their MX2 rider Kyle Webster took a solid fifth.
The Netherlands, with good results by Kay de Wolf, who was second in the MX2 race, and Calvin Vlaanderen, who was second in the Open, were second, but there are question marks over Glenn Coldenhoff, who crashed out in the MXGP race and didn’t finish the moto.
In third was Team Belgium, with Sacha Coenen leading the way with an impressive MX2 win on his MXON debut, while his brother Lucas came from last in the MXGP race and worked his way up to a great sixth. Laim Everts backed up the Brothers with a great fifth in the Open moto.
Germany, with a second from Ken Roczen in MXGP and a fourth by Simon Laengenfelder in MX2, ended the day in fourth.
Host Nation had to defy an awful gate pick to finish fifth with Eli Tomac nailing ninth in the MXGP race while Justin Cooper showed good speed for third in MX2 and RJ Hampshire fought through the pack to fourth in the open class.
Team GB found it hard going with Josh Gilbert being our best performer with 13th in the super tough MXGP race, while Dylan Walsh in MX2 and Conrad Mewse in the Open were both 16th.
Team France’s Romain Febvre showed good speed for third in the MXGP race with a feisty Ruben Fernadez in fourth and Tim Gajser in fifth.
Joe Shimoda for Team Japan notched up a great second in the Open moto.
Onwards to tomorrow’s main races. Australia are going to take some stopping!
