It's go time! 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship Round 5 - Preview

When a motocross championship reaches its penultimate round, there can be no better place to visit for raising excitement levels and getting that adrenaline flowing than the iconic Hawkstone Park! And, that’s the destination this coming Sunday, July 6th, for the latest 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship title chasing adventures! So far, the opening four rounds have been staged as double-header events with racing on both Saturday and Sunday each time. For Hawkstone, though, it’s the one-day format and three blocks of demanding, hotly contested, and highly competitive action instead!

Last time out at Lower Drayton, AJP team rider Jayden Ashwell scored his first Open class overall win of the campaign, but series leader James Dodd on the FUS Marsh Honda was to pick up yet another podium in 2nd ahead of Will Hughes, Edward Briscoe, James Bates, Luke Bull and Joshua Fletcher-Williams. In the Open class championship table, the ultra-consistent Dodd still leads the way 39 points clear of Ashwell, with Hughes 3rd, Bates 4th and Adam Wells 5th.

In the Lower Drayton MX2 contest, Henry Williams of the FUS Team and Josh Waterman of CPMX Racing both scored 91 points in the race for overall glory, the verdict going to Williams courtesy of his better last moto placing. These two aces are also going right for it in the battle to bag the title and with just Hawkstone and Warmingham Lane to come, Henry tops the table only a very slender 10 points better off than Josh. Currently sitting in 3rd place, 2T ace Luke Dean and just a further 36 points in arrears and still very much right in the title hunt followed by the battling Luke Meredith, Yarin Evans, Jordan Wright and Charlie Palmer.

With another faultless maximum points score at Lower Drayton, Jimmy Margetson on the AJP KTM is going clear at the top of the 125cc Championship standings and certainly looks odds-on favourite at present to comfortably retain his crown. Jimmy’s advantage is 57 points with Midwest Racing pilot Wyatt McGregor in 2nd and Luke Newman in 3rd. Going into the Hawkstone event, it’s Aaron Colley, Will Turner, Scott Corfield, Luke Phillips, and Benjamin Sullivan currently are the other lads occupying the top eight table positions. Although Jimmy’s bossing the main 125cc class, it’s a totally different story over in the Youth 125cc contest. Suffering from stator issues on his Yamaha machine at Lower Drayton, Ollie Jewitt saw an 18-point Championship lead evaporate into what is now a 5-point deficit! The new lad at the top is Woz Boyce, a rider who has been super consistent all season long! In this tight Youth 125cc contest, 3rd placed Linc Hasted is also still very much right in the mix with Ted Bullen, Oliver Bebb, Harley Piper and Northern Irish lad Ryan Jackson next up.

Although Wildcard Elvis Totney took the overall BW85cc win during round four, it was Stanley Siebert who extended the series lead. At Lower Drayton, Stanley finished as runner-up, earning himself another big 81 Championship points in the process. So, at present, the top six in that one reads Siebert 348 points, Sean Smout 297, Finn Fitzgerald 223, Aston Whitehead 217, Jimmy Whiston 193 and Ryan Tilley 192. Over in the SW85cc class, Championship leader Freddie Smith scorched to another overall win in style. Young Fast Freddie now has a nice 81-point advantage at the summit with Connor Johnston, George Milnes, Sebastian Perrins-Talbot and Harry Sayce still chasing hard.

Taking out a Wildcard entry, Libby Chatburn claimed the top step in style at Lower Drayton with a maximum points score in the AMCA Women’s class. For series leader Amber McGregor on the Midwest Racing Husqvarna, it was also to be a productive weekend, bagging a solid 3rd overall. With those 75 points earned and in the bag, Amber has a nice 53-point cushion with Erin Howes on 270, both Hannah Jones and Jaymee Garrood on 233, Holly Williams, the Lower Drayton runner-up, on 221 and Sophie Jones on 218.

Although Wildcard and FUS Marsh Honda rider Phil Mercer was the Lower Drayton star scorching to a quartet of Vets moto wins, the action was to again be close and very entertaining! In the Over 40’s it’s looking like a battle for the number one spot between defending Champion James Lane and the fast-starting Jamie Dobson. At present, the gap is just 18 points in Lane’s favour, but should the current top two fail, then Sam Callow is certainly waiting to pounce! The all-action Callow was right in the thick of the entertainment providers during round four, along with Richard Meakin.

Defending his Vets Over 50’s crown, Simon Lane is already almost in touching distance of another title. Incredibly, his advantage is at present a whooping 160 points with Ste Marlow in 2nd and Matt Ryder 3rd. Although Vets Over 60’s leader Brian Staples was a Lower Drayton non-starter as he was away picking up an ACU British Vets title instead, he still tops the AMCA table for his age group, 34 points clear of Paul Blick.

Michael Harbage is still going along nicely at the top of the Clubman Seniors Championship, continually producing consistent, high points scoring rides. On the podiums at both Fatcat and Brokthorpe, Harbage has an 89-point lead at present over Ricky Ryder and Billy McGillivary, who have leapt into 3rd in the standings. With Hawkstone next up, Oliver Parry, Louis Tilley, Lloyd Clarke, Jed Reeson, Luke Bradley, Kurt Talbot and George Bromley round off the top ten.

With overall victories in three out of four completed rounds, Leighton Price is certainly flying high in the Clubmans Juniors Championship. At present, Leighton is a big 99 points better off than Jack Breakwell, with Oliver Critchley, Matthew Limer, George Wilcox, Ryan Murphy, Joseph Harvey, Harvey Hunt, Benjamin Prosser and Kieran Oldfield next up and still chasing hard.

So, with it all to play for in the 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship, Hawkstone Park is certainly the place to be this coming Sunday, July 6th. The circuit can be found near Market Drayton in Shropshire, SY4 4NA.
