Heaving at Haverigg! Thomas Brown Memorial & Cumbria MX Battle in the sand – Race Report & Results
All roads once again led to Route44 Haverigg on the Cumbrian Coast for the 2021 Thomas Brown Memorial, one of the best events in the UK Mx calendar, if you have not been before a simply Why? That is the question. Big Gates, Sand Track, Beach 100yards away, dads race, fireworks and a beer tent….with the added bonus of only 2 races on a Sunday ;).

With the ongoing fixture clash nightmare this season, the meeting was a joint one with Cumbria Mx final Championship rounds and the Battle in the Sand…..5 races over 2 days were go.
Saturday 9am all bikes to the start line for a Lap Parade in honour of Thomas Brown. Matthew Moffat top Northern Racer and a good friend of Thomas had the honour of leading the lap onboard the #44 KTM owned by Thomas’s family. Also on Sunday, as with many clubs throughout the country, there was a Lap for Jude Morris at 1:01. We hope these laps can show support to the families who are always in our thoughts.
Leo Whittle
First up to hit the track was a big lineup of Autos, it seems a big surge in the numbers entering this class which is great for the future of the sport in the North, and keeps the Dads fit with all the running after them. Taking a very very impressive maximum points in the Autos was Lyaa Rutherford (apologies if this is a miss-spelt name from my laps) 5 wins over the weekend. Finley Pope had 2 second places over the weekend and that was enough to pip Caleb Shearer to the second podium place, Taylor Dodd from the North East just behind in fourth before his jump up to the 65 class.
The 65 class was wide open with some great battles both inside and outside the top 10. a 2—1 racecard on Sunday was enough for Alfie Lawrie to take the honours ahead of Irish Raider Kyle Graham. Moto 1 winner Yamaha rider Finley Cookson completed the podium but will be disappointed with a moto2 8th. Special mention goes out to local lad Connor Thompson who has been on the Gas this year especially in the North East Championship, he, unfortunately, broke his wrist on Saturday, get well soon Connor.
The Small Wheel 85s ran separate from the Gig wheels and the top 2 were only split by a single point come Sunday lunchtime. Kaden Boyd, it was coming away with 217 points and a 1-2-1-1-3 just ahead of Route44 regular Owen Kenningley, great battle lads. Scottish lad, Robbie Scott completed the podium after an impressive season in the Scot Mx championship.
Ryan Waggott
Cumbrian Ryan Waggott has been plotting his trade up and down the country this season, however, you can see the racing with the faster lads has paid off as he laid down some super fast laps in the big wheel class. Liam Johnson was the only one to pip Waggott in moto 4 in Liams final season the 85s. Jake Hayes went quietly about his business was consistent and ended up an impressive third on the podium.
Race 1 in the Rookies was absolutely class, a proper ding dong battle between Brad Knowles Arai Elcock and Charlie Henderson with the three at times three abreast going into corners, great safe fast racing lads. The Podium was to end up in the order above with Jay Cheel very unlucky not to make the podium with a 18-4-2-2-2 racecard.
Finley Easton
Again I will apologise if this name is incorrect, but my laps have the Over 30s class as Jain-Carlo Sivoris going 1-2-1-1-1 ahead of local lad Ben Southward and another local and 2020 Cumbrian champion Mark Blacklock in third. The returning Clark Davidson showed he has lost none of his speed, solid just behind in 4th.
Over 30s line up
Dean Sewell won the Under 30s category taking 3 impressive wins in doing so. Samuel Carruthers continued some impressive riding shown recently coming second overall ahead of Jack Sutcliffe. Local lad Ethan Brierley was overjoyed with a long-overdue first win in the class in moto5 Sunday, as eventually, everything came together as he has been on the gas for a while now.
Michael Graham as he did last year (I Think) took home the B class victory to the North East, a huge number travel over the A69 and A66 to this event annually and Michael recovered from a poor moto1 to take 4 race wins. Mark Reed-Brough another who has been on form recently followed home 2 points behind in second with Joe Khamouli third.
Stefan Robson
With several of the A class who would normally attend this event, unfortunately, missing due to the clash with the British Championship at Landrake. However, even though ran with the Bs the entertainment laid on was awesome as always. Gavin Stephenson came through the pack in moto 1 to take the victory, his first of 5 over the weekend. 2Stroke pilot Daniel Parry came home second with Local lad Dee Jay Walker completing the podium.
Another great weekend enjoyed by all who attended after sadly missing last years event. A big personal thank you to all involved in organising these events and on the day, as without you we simply would not have Motocross to enjoy. Thank you from me.
