Griffiths on fire at Ford! 2023 UK Evo MX Championship Round 2 – Race Report & Results

Back on Sunday, April 23rd Round 2 of the Uk Evo Mx Championships which was originally to take place at Wickwar in Gloucestershire took place at Ford in Wiltshire. Rain had fallen overnight prior to the race day which made things a bit slippery to start the day, but by the time practice was over the track was nigh on in prime condition for yet another good entry for what has become a very popular series.

Report and Images by Dave Rich

The 125 Evo class saw Jordan Barrs win the opening race but he had to be at his best as fellow CR125 rider Daryl Bolter was all over him in the closing stages and at the line was just a second behind with Kristian Hutchings taking third where as in the second moto it was a breath taking encounter between Hutchings, Barrs and Bolter with literally nothing between them at the line with Hutchings taking it by 0.344 of a second with Bolter 0.192 behind Barrs taking a close third. In the last race, it was Bolter who was to lead early on before a mistake saw Hutchings take over at the front followed by Barrs with these two battling it out all the way to the chequered flag with Hutchings just holding on to take the win from Barrs with Bradley Doyle taking third. Hutchings took the overall by literally one point from Barrs with Bolter taking third overall.

Luke Dean giving his all in the Evo 250 class

In the Evo 250 class there was a dominating performance from Luke Dean on his CR250 who won the opening two races from the CR250 of Jamie Smith with Smith in the last race denying Dean a clean sweep of wins, but it was Dean who took the overall from Smith with Jordan Carrier with a hat trick of third place finishes taking third overall.

The Evo 500 class saw some close racing with Ben Griffiths winning the first two races on his CR500 but he was put under huge pressure in the last moto in the closing stages by Paul Edge who was giving his all trying to find a way past Griffiths which he did on the last lap and just held off Griffiths to take the win, but it was Griffiths who took the overall from Jamie Scott with the KX500 Kawasaki of James Price taking third overall.

There was no stopping Kevin Reed in the Evo over 60’s class

In the Vets Evo over 45 class, it was Kevin Sanders on his CR125 who was to take the overall with two wins and a second with Martin King on his CR250 taking the other win and a second and a third to end the day second overall and third overall went to Steve Bundock where as in the Vets over 60’s class there was no stopping the RM500 Suzuki of Kevin Reed who was to take a hat-trick of wins with Vince Crawley second to Reed in all three races taking second overall and with three third place finishes third overall went to Nick Baum.

The Super Evo under 40’s saw a clean sweep of wins for Scott James on his KX250 with the KX500 of Ryan Allen taking second overall with a hat-trick of second place finishes and Chuck Davies on his KX125 taking third overall with a hat-trick of third place finishes whereas in the over 40’s class it was Nathan Davies who took the overall, but Nathan was denied a clean sweep of wins in the last moto by Luke Dewey who was to complete a 2-2-1 scorecard to give him second overall and taking third overall was Craig Dowding with a hat-trick of third place finishes.

Bradley Clarke turning the power on in the Super Evo under 40’s class

The over 50’s Super Evo Class saw Jason Morris win all three races to give him the overall but who was going to take second overall as both Steve Wells on his KX500 and Max Hendy on his CR250 were tied on points going into the last race so it was all on this race and it was Wells who took second in the race ahead of Hendy with gave Wells second overall by 2 points from Hendy.

The Twinshock under 50’s class saw a clean sweep of wins for Scott Faulkner on his 560 KTM with Matt Nash giving his all in all three races onboard his 250 Red Rocket with a hat-trick of second place finishes behind Faulkner and taking third overall was Phillip Peaster who powered his YZ465 to three consistent finishes where as in the over 50’s Twinshock class there was a fine display from Terry House on his 490 Maico who took a hat-trick of wins, but Terry had to work hard in the opening race when he got stuck in fourth gear and had to run with his bike up one of the hills but he soldiered on and rode the rest of the race in fourth to take the chequered flag. Second overall went to Wayne Twidle on his 250 Red Rocket with a 3-2-2 scorecard and taking third overall was the RM400 Suzuki of Nick Dyer.

Scott Faulkner dominated the Twinshock under 50’s class

The Modern 2-Stroke under 50’s saw Paul Burn dominate all three races on the YZ250 with Jason Williams taking a hattrick of second place finishes to take second overall and Josh Herbert ended the day third overall and in the over 50’s class it was a clean sweep for the KTM125 of Gareth Dunsford with Darren Kenington taking second overall with a hattrick of second place finishes and third overall went to Gary Henson who was third in all three races.

In the WME Pre 85 class there was a win for Matthew Hitchman in the opening race which he followed up with two second place finishes in the other two races to give him the overall with Dean Warren claiming second overall with a 2-3-3 scorecard ahead of Kevin Butcher who took third overall. Nicky Jones was to win the second and third races, but a non-scoring first race saw him end the day eighth overall.
