With cooler conditions than Saturday creating perfect racing conditions, thousands of fans packed the famous Portuguese hillside circuit to witness another thrilling chapter in this year’s MX2 World Championship.
While Guillem Farres completed a flawless weekend with a commanding overall victory, there was also plenty for British fans to feel positive about as Ollie Colmer secured his career-best Grand Prix finish in 12th overall, with fellow Brit Ben Mustoe also impressing in 13th.
Farres carried his excellent form into Sunday’s races after finishing second in Warm-Up behind Sacha Coenen before grabbing his first advantage of the day in Race One.
Although Julius Mikula claimed the first Fox Holeshot Award of his Grand Prix career, Farres wasted no time moving into the lead through the second corner before immediately beginning to edge clear.
Behind him, championship leader Sacha Coenen suffered a heavy crash in the opening laps while running third, dropping him outside the top twenty. The Belgian produced an impressive recovery ride to finish sixth, but there was no catching Farres, who claimed his sixth race victory of the season.

Janis Reisulis rode brilliantly to finish second ahead of reigning MX2 World Champion Simon Längenfelder, with Camden McLellan fourth.
Ben Mustoe had another encouraging race by running inside the top ten during the early stages before eventually crossing the line in 13th, while Ollie Colmer continued to gain valuable experience finishing 15th.
Race Two saw Farres once again produce the perfect start, taking the Fox Holeshot before controlling the race from the front.
Janis Reisulis again looked impressive early on before championship leader Coenen charged through to second after another determined recovery ride. Liam Everts eventually worked his way into third, but nobody had an answer to the pace of the Spaniard.
Farres completed the perfect weekend with victory to secure his second career Grand Prix overall, while Reisulis celebrated his first ever MX2 podium in second overall and Coenen limited the championship damage by finishing third.
For the British contingent, Colmer enjoyed his best-ever Grand Prix performance by finishing 12th overall for Chambers KTM, while Mustoe rounded out a strong weekend in 13th overall for the ASA United GASGAS team.
Colmer celebrated the result on social media, saying:
“MXGP Portugal 🇵🇹
12th overall today! My career best GP overall.
Thank you to my team and family for supporting to get to weekends like this 😁
Thank you to all the sponsors & supporters 🙌”
Farres’ victory cuts Coenen’s championship advantage from 46 points to 32 heading into the second half of the season, ensuring the MX2 title battle remains wide open as the championship heads to South Africa next weekend.
Guillem Farres
“I feel great, it’s really nice to get a perfect weekend, and this is my first ever perfect weekend. This GP is also special because it’s close to Spain, so I had my family here and a bunch of friends showed up as a surprise. I haven’t changed a thing the whole weekend, which gives me a lot of extra confidence when riding. We did a lot of work this winter and for some reason on hard pack tracks I haven’t touched a single clicker all year. The most important thing is not winning every weekend, it’s minimizing the bad days. On the good days everything is easier; on the bad days is when the real champion shows up.”

Janis Reisulis
“I was feeling very calm this weekend. The last two races were not how I really wanted, so I went in with nothing to lose and just went for it. Two quite good starts helped me and I was feeling really good on the track, nice flow and I was just keeping it in control. In EMX you can sometimes relax at the end of a race, but in MX2 the intensity at the end is sometimes even higher than at the beginning, and that’s what I’ve been losing in the early part of the season. This weekend gave me a lot of experience keeping up at the front in the last laps. I’m slowly getting into this class.”
Sacha Coenen
“I started not too bad in race one, was in third, but then I made a mistake and went down, and came back from last to sixth which was quite difficult because the track was wet and slippery, you couldn’t make a mistake because it was really fast for everyone. In race two I had a not too bad start, stayed in third for quite a long time, made a move into second place and tried to come back, but Guillem passed me so I couldn’t catch him. Third overall was not really bad for a bad weekend, let’s say. I just had some issues dealing with the front at times, but it is what it is.”
