Dean the don at Hawkstone! 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship Round 5 - Race Report & Results

Proving that it’s still a major draw for riders, the iconic Hawkstone Park had the ‘Entries Full’ signs up last Sunday. The event was the penultimate round of the 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship, and in what was always going to be a very tasty affair, the excitement levels then went up a notch or two with the inclusion of numerous ‘Wildcard’ competitors. Indeed, one of those ‘Wildcards’ was to undoubtedly be the star of Sunday’s meeting, so take a bow, Lucy Barker!

Race Report and Images by Mike Wood

At Hawkstone, the AMCA Women’s Championship riders were pitched into a Vets Championship class which included former Grand Prix pilot Phil ‘Factory’ Mercer. Barker, though, is a modern-day FIM World Championship rider herself as well as having recently been crowned for the third successive season the European Women’s Motocross Champion. On her rapid AVT Campers KTM, Lucy brilliantly won all three motos in style with fellow Ladies Libby Chatburn and Lauren Collingwood also posting impressive top ten positions. With Collingwood having recently returned to action after breaking her arm, unfortunately, Moto Two mechanical gremlins stopped her from claiming a podium spot, so instead it was the consistent Chatburn and Holly Williams joining the super Barker in the top three overall prize winners circle. In the all-important AMCA Women’s Championship table, Amber McGregor still leads the way and will carry a nice 55-point advantage into the final round with Erin Howes in 2nd and Hannah Jones 3rd, just a single point ahead of Williams.

In the Over 40’s Vets, Lee Martin scored his first overall win of the season, his only other podium placing coming during the opening round at Fatcat Motoparc back in April. At Hawkstone, Lee was right on it heading home Jamie Dobson, James Lane and Rich Meakin. Defending his crown in the O40, Lane will take a tight 17-point lead into the decider at Warmingham with his season-long rival Dobson still hot on his heels; that’s the story of the season in this one. With Sam Callow failing to score in the opening Hawkstone moto, he has now dropped down to 4th in the standings but is only a single point behind Meakin.

James Lane the Vets Over 40 series leader

For Over 50’s Vets leader Simon Lane, Hawkstone proved to be a very painful affair! Deciding to also race in the FXR AMCA series on Saturday, he crashed out in practice, breaking his pelvis in the process. Get well soon, Simon! His pain, though, was to be ever so slightly soothed by the knowledge that he had already accumulated enough points to retain his AMCA title! With Simon out, Wildcard Phil Mercer topped this class ahead of John Littler and Casey Jones. With another maximum points score and overall win, Brian Staples continues to top the Over 60’s Vets series, and he is now 51 points clear of Paul Blick, meaning that his title could well be confirmed after moto one at Warmingham Lane in August.

After scoring his first overall win of the AMCA season during round 4, Jayden Ashwell was at it again during the Hawkstone bash, topping the Open class podium ahead of series leader James Dodd and Scott Aldridge. In three super hot moto’s which was combined with those on the gas, hard charging MX2 pilots, Ashwell was first past the post in both motos one and two before Dodd took the last race honours.

In that MX2 class, it was Luke Dean on the 2T HM Racing Fantic who took top slot from Jayden Jones and Henry Williams. And boy was Dean good at Hawkstone, really mixing it up with the Open class lads and recording a very strong 4/7/5 result card. For MX2 series leader Henry Williams, the day did not start well, being torpedoed off his Honda early in moto one before then brilliantly charging from last back to 15th. From then onwards, Henry scored 8/6 placings, leaving him with a 16-point advantage at the top of the table, ahead of season-long challenger Josh Waterman, and Dean just a further 15 points in arrears, holding 3rd. This one could still go all the way to the final chequered flag of the season! In the Open class title race, Dodd has led the way since round one, and he’s still at the top, 36 points clear of Ashwell. Only these two riders can now mathematically lift the crown, as Will Hughes in 3rd requires just a further 4 points to secure the bronze medal position.

Hawkstone Park and yet another maximum for the superb reigning AMCA 125cc Champion Jimmy Margetson. Those results mean that Jimmy could well wrap up another title during moto one at the final Warmingham Lane round. With Jimmy in cruise control at Hawkstone, Charlie Palmer, having competed all season in the MX2 class, dropped back down to a 125cc mount and what fun the Holab Concepts Fantic rider had! Right in the business end of proceedings, Charlie reeled off an impressive 7/2/2 scorecard for 2nd overall, with the always consistent Luke Newman earning 3rd. All season long, the accompanying 125cc Youth class has been an entertaining, red-hot affair and going into Hawkstone, Woz Boyce led the title charge with just a 5-point advantage after moving to the summit ahead of Ollie Jewitt during round four. At Hawkstone, Boyce pulled another 6 points clear of Jewitt, but this one is almost certainly going to be all about a title-deciding last moto at the final round! Enjoying his very best meeting of the season and highlighting the total unpredictability of the Youth 125cc class, it was Oakley Kettle who was to bag the Hawkstone overall with Boyce, Linc Hasted, Oliver Bebb, Jewitt and Ted Bullen next up. So following the Hawkstone sand surfing, the respective 125cc tables show Margetson on 454 points, Wyatt McGregor 378, Newman 360, Aaron Colley 333, Will Turner 289 and Luke Phillips 189, the main class top six. Over in the Youth’s, it’s Boyce on 369 points, Jewitt 358, Hasted 325, Bullen 296, Bebb 286 and Ryan Jackson 213.

Woz Boyce the 125cc Youth leader

Just as per all of the other Hawkstone classes, the combined BW85cc/SW85cc contest was full but did not stop very impressive ‘Wildcard’ Jenson Severn from blasting to a brilliant maximum. In the opening two clashes, fellow ‘Wildcard’ Elvis Totney chased him home with Finley Cookson, the last moto runner-up. Of the AMCA series registered riders, Sean Smout was the best BW85cc rider with a consistent hat-trick of 5th placings. In the series, though, Stanley Siebert, who has controlled proceedings since round one, is still holding top spot, 50 points clear of Smout, with Finn Fitzgerald in 3rd. Wildcards Oscar Hindley and Freddie Davill were the top two finishers in SW85cc, but AMCA series leader Freddie Smith was also on the podium again in 3rd. The Hawkstone results mean that Smith has now accumulated enough points to be confirmed the 2025 AMCA SW85cc Champion, many congratulations Freddie!

Showing fantastic spirit and true character following the unfortunate injury to his Dad on Saturday, Tyler Lane flew the Lane Racing flag in style by taking the Clubman Juniors overall win at Hawkstone ahead of series leader Leighton Price and Lewis Day. In the combined moto, which also includes the Clubman Seniors, Tyler went 5/10/14 as Cameron Doleman, Albie Hall, and Liam Morrod took the moto wins. Going right at it, the three moto victors also filled the Clubman Seniors podium with Hall bagging top honours from Morrod and Dolman. Although Clubman Seniors series leader Michael Harbage was down in 10th overall at Hawkstone, he only requires another 16 points at the final Warmingham battle to earn the title, with Ricky Ryder and Billy McGillivary currently occupying the other medal positions. Over in the Clubman Juniors, though, it’s business already done and dusted at the top with the title in the bag for Leighton Price. The battle for silver and bronze will be fought out by Jack Breakwell, Oliver Critchley, Matthew Limer, Ryan Murphy, George Wilcox, Joseph Harvey and Benjamin Prosser.

So the 2025 AMCA British Motocross Championship goes down to the final round at Warmingham Lane in August. Many congratulations to Freddie Smith (SW85cc), Leighton Price (Clubman Juniors) and Simon Lane (Vets O50’s) who have already put their titles in the bag, but who will now join them?
