De Wolf makes strong MXGP debut with top seven in Spain

Kay de Wolf marked his full-time step up to the MXGP class with an impressive top-seven overall finish at the MXGP of Andalucia, overcoming injury and brutal track conditions to deliver a determined performance in Spain.

The Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider arrived at round two of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship facing a major challenge. Not only was it his first appearance in the premier class, but it also came just weeks after a thumb injury ruled him out of the season opener in Argentina.

Thrown into the deep sand of Almonte—made even more punishing by heavy rain—de Wolf’s debut became a true test of resilience. The circuit quickly deteriorated into one of the roughest and most physically demanding tracks, but the Dutchman adapted well as the weekend progressed.

After being caught up in first-turn chaos during Saturday’s qualifying race, de Wolf lined up on Sunday focused on gaining experience and building momentum in his first MXGP outing.

In race one, he showed early intent, pushing into the top ten on the opening lap and maintaining a strong pace throughout. Despite the demanding conditions taking their toll late in the moto, he secured a solid tenth-place finish—an encouraging start in elite company.

The second moto saw further progression. Working his way forward steadily, de Wolf improved his lap times and race craft as the moto unfolded. By the closing stages, he had broken into the top ten and continued to push, eventually finishing eighth after a strong late charge.

Those results were enough to secure seventh overall for the day—an impressive return to racing and a promising first step in the MXGP class.

Reflecting on his debut, de Wolf said:

“Honestly, I’m really happy to be back racing. It’s been a tough few weeks with the injury, so just lining up again and finishing both motos feels good. I’m not at 100% yet, but I could feel it getting better every time I was on the bike. The speed is there, I just need a bit more time and race rhythm. Overall it’s a solid start to my MXGP journey, and we’ll keep building from here.”

With his first MXGP appearance now under his belt, de Wolf heads to the next round in Switzerland with confidence growing—ready to continue his adaptation to the premier class and build on an encouraging debut.
