Cornish glory for Mewse, Searle & Richmond! 2025 Motul ACU British Motocross Championship Round 5 - Report & Results

The Motul ACU British Motocross Championship made a welcome return to the West Country and the superb hillside hardpack circuit of Landrake in Cornwall on Sunday for Round five of the 2025 series.

  • Conrad Mewse kept his unbeaten run going with a 1-1 performance in MX1
  • Tommy Searle extended his MX2 championship lead going 2-1 in MX2
  • Charlie Richmond edged out Ryan Waggott for the 125cc victory

In MX1 Crendon Tru7 Honda’s Conrad Mewse continued his run of race victories, making it 10 from 10 in 2025, although he didn’t have it easy, having to recover from a poor start in moto 2, where he fought his way from 10th to the front to keep a hard charging Adam Sterry of Chambers Racing at bay.

Josh Gilbert giving his all on home soil in Cornwall and was to take second overall in the MX1 class.

In moto one, Mewse had to overcome the fast-starting Lexa MX rider and local hero Josh Gilbert, who had the early lead and looked fast at the front, but once he got ahead he and Gilbert took control of the first two spots to finish 1-2 ahead of the SC Sporthomes Husqvarna rider Tristan Purdon who had a great race. Taylor Hammal continues to edge closer to the front on his DRT Kawasaki and finished moto one in a good fourth ahead of Sterry in fifth, Apico Honda’s Tom Grimshaw in sixth, Lexa MX’s John Adamson in seventh, and Chambers Racing’s Dan Thornhill.  Much to the delight of the local crowd, Louie Kessell finished a superb ninth with Apico Honda’s Martin Barr rounding out the top ten.

Back to Moto 2 and Mewse had his work cut out to take the victory, and fend off Sterry, who looked super fast in second.  Gilbert finished third ahead of Hammal, with Adamson fifth, Grimshaw sixth, Thornhill seventh, and Kessell going one better for eighth. Charlie Putnam had one of his best-ever MXGB rides on the SC Sporthomes Husqvarna, while another local racer, Josh Taylor, secured a fantastic tenth.  Spare a thought for Purdon, who went down hard and couldn’t finish the moto. We wish Tristan a speedy recovery.

Conrad Mewse the MX1 victor

The overall saw Mewse, flanked on the podium by Gilbert and Sterry in that order, with Hammal in fourth.  Special mention to Kessell for finishing a career best eighth,  and Putnam in ninth, as well as Taylor in twelfth.

The MX1 podium

Over in MX2, there were big question marks over Dirt Store Triumphs Red Plate holder Tommy Searle who only a few weeks back suffered a broken back at the Arenacross World Tour finale in Abu Dhabi, but he put pay to any doubts by finishing a strong second in moto one behind ASA United GasGas’s Ben Mustoe who rode a fantastic race to win his first-ever British Championship moto.

Ben Mustoe took his ever MX2 pro win

SC Sporthomes Husqvarna’s Charlie Heyman continues to grow in confidence and stature and took third in the first moto ahead of the Dirt Store Triumph of Billy Askew and Calum Mitchell, who had a superb fifth on the Worx Total Triumph machine.  New DRT Kawasaki signing Kay Karssemakers would end the moto in sixth just ahead of Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Spanish GP rider Oriol Oliver.  Making a welcome return to injury and showing fantastic pace was Joe Brookes, who showed his credentials for future podiums with eighth. Jake Nicholls rolled back the years on the Crendon Tru7 Honda in ninth, and Chambers Racing’s Ollie Colmer was tenth, with the consistent Glenn McCormick on the Chambers Racing bike tenth.  Gabriel SS24 KTM’s EMX250 duo Gyan Doensen and Max Werner were 12th and 13th respectively.

No 45 Jake Nicholls and No 15 Henry Williams battling it out in the MX2 class.

Moto Two saw Searle ride a stormer. He made a great start, grabbed the early lead before Oliver would reel him in and make the pass for the lead, but the wily Dirt Store Triumph rider would make a clever move to pass his KTM rival straight back and take the wind out of the Spaniard’s sails. Searle would go on to take the race win and the overall, with Oliver claiming second in the moto ahead of Karssemakers, who showed good speed in the second race, with Heyman again looking good in fourth.

MX2 Podium

Race one winner Mustoe would have a disaster, crashing out and hurting himself and having a DNF, which was a huge shame for the young rider after having such a good first moto.

Askew would finish fifth in Race 2 ahead of Brookes in sixth, Nicholls in seventh, Werner in eighth, McCormick in ninth and Doensen in tenth.

Overall, it would be Searle on the top step of the podium with Heyman a fantastic second and Oliver third. Karssemakers would be fourth with Askew in fifth.

Tommy has now extended his lead in the championship to 14 points ahead of Askew, with Heyman one point further back.

In the 125cc class Round 1 winner Ryan Waggott showed he has speed on hard pack two, fending off Charlie Richmon,d who clouted his hand on a post for the win in the first race before the roles were reversed in moto 2, where Richmond would take the chequers which would give him the overall over Waggott. Hayden Statt would work hard for two thirds and the number 3 spot on the box, Harry Lee would have a good day with fourth overall, Drew Stock was fifth, the fast starting local racer Zane Stephens had a great sixth, Lucas Moncrieff was seventh, Christopher Brindlay was eiggth, Finley Pickering was ninth and Jack Evans was tenth.

Ryan Waggott heads the opening 125 race and was to go on untroubled to take the win

Richmond now has a 13 point advantaage in the Championship over Waggott going into the next two rounds at Duns in Scotland on the 30th & 31st August.
