Awesome Artus storms Retro Vets Motocross at Whiteway Barton - Race Report & Results

Back on the Bank Holiday Weekend of Sat/Sun 24th & 25th May, a new event was introduced by the UK Evo Mx team, which was the Retro Vets, which took place at the ever-popular Whiteway Barton track near Kingsteignton in Devon.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

There was a fair entry in all classes, which was to produce some excellent racing on a track that had been prepped nigh on to perfection, with water being put down early morning and during the day, which was to keep the dust down to a minimum.

Danny Blakely

In the Ultra Evo Under 50’s up to 08 class there was a surprise entry from Dan Thornhill who was out on a 250 2-Stroke Honda who was getting in some bike time in preparation for the VMXdN event later in the year and Dan was to show his class and looked comfortable and was to take all five race wins by some considerable margin with William Ell taking second overall ahead of Charlie Parker who took that third step on the podium and in the Ultra Evo Over 50’s up to 08 class there was only one winner over the two days and that was Danny Blakeley who raced away at the front to take the chequered flag on five occasions with Casey Jones who finished second to Blakeley in all five races taking second overall and Darren Kenington taking third overall with five third place finishes.

Dan Thornhill

In the Evo Under 50’s up to 89 class there was a fine performance from Gareth Artus who was to take a clean sweep of wins, but he was to be pushed in a couple of races by the big 500 Honda of Nigel Kibble who gave his all and ended the weekend taking second overall with a 2,2,2,2,3 scorecard after losing his back brake in the last race and third overall was William Ell who was pretty consistant on both days, whereas in the Over 50’s class there was a clean sweep of wins for Dean Warren who didn’t have the best of starts in a couple of the races and had to force his way to the front with Richard Dors taking second overall from Jonathan Briggs who took that third step on the podium.

Marcus Alba

In the Super Evo Under 50’s up to 99 class it was Marcus Alba who was to lead the opening race from the off before Luke Dean took over on the opening lap, but Dean went down on lap two on a sharpe righthander and Alba took the lead again, but this was short lived as Dean had regrouped and was to regain the lead on the third lap and from there went on to take the opening race win. Dean was to take three more wins over the two days to give him the overall, but he was denied a clean sweep in the second race on the Saturday by Paul Bowen, who did have Dean looking to take the lead before Dean went down. Brad Thornhill was on top form and was consistant in all five races with a scorecard of 2,2,2,2,2, to give him a well deserved second overall with third overall going to Bowen who’s scorecard was 3,1,3,3,3, and in the Over 50’s class it was Jason Aylett who went into day two leading for the overall with two wins and a second, but the Sunday belonged to Martyn Tucker who won both races which was enough to give him the overall from Aylett by three points with Tony Hale taking third overall.

Martin Tucker

The Over 60’s up to 1999 class saw Mike Allport take four wins over the two days but unfortunately, he picked up a Dnf in the second race which put him off the podium and the overall was to go to Martin King who did win the second race and was second to Allport in the other races. Second overall was David White with a 3,2,3,3,3, scorecard and third overall went to Sean Renvoize, but in the Over 60’s 2000 upwards any bike class there was a clean sweep of wins for Marc Spruce who took the overall with Nigel Parker and Greg Pascoe tied on points for second overall, but by virtue of the better result in there last race it was Parker who took second.

In the Twinshock Under 50’s class it was Jordan Davies who took the opening race and was looking good to take the second race when with one lap to go a mechanical problem with the bike saw him take a Dnf and it was much the same for Davies in the third race when he was leading and the problem reoccurred, and he picked up another Dnf. Davies came back strong on day two and took both wins but it wasn’t enough to get him on the podium as the overall was to go to Matt Wells with a scorecard of 2,1,1,2,4 with Matt Bennett second overall and Ben Dyer taking that third spot on the podium, whereas in the Over 50’s class it proved a good first day for James Reeves winning all three races and the first race on day two but unfortunately for James he was a nonstarter for the last race which was to cost him the overall which went to Andrew Batten who even though he didn’t win a race he was most consistant with Steve Matthews who did win the last race taking third overall.

The Pre 83 125 class saw Carl Benham in fine form, but he was denied a clean sweep of wins in the last race, which was won by Jordan Hands, giving him second overall behind Benham, with Richard Benham taking third overall.

The Wme Pre 85 class there was no stopping Nicky Jones who was in a world of his own once he hit the front and notched up all five race wins to take the overall with second overall going down to the last race result as both Kyle Goodbear and Toby Wright were tied on points but with Wright beating Goodbear he was declared second overall.

Archie Hicks

In the Modern Under 50’s class there was a fine display of riding from Archie Hicks who was to take a clean sweep of wins and the overall but there was some good battles going on behind him in all the races between Sam Dyer, Danny Smyth and Bradley Priest and it was Priest who took that second spot on the podium by two points from Dyer who was third overall.

In the Over 50’s Modern class Craig Pratley showed that he can still ride a bike at some speed and was to take all five race wins by some considerable margin, second overall was to go to Chris Brown who was to give his all with a scorecard of 3,2,2,2,2, and third overall was to go to Gareth Dunsford who had been consistant all weekend.
