All hail the heroes of Hawkstone! 2025 Bridgestone British Masters Round 4 - Race Report & Results

The second half of the season for the 2025 Bridgestone British Masters powered by Rock Oil saw a tough test for the riders, as the series travelled to Shropshire and the legendary Hawkstone Park.
Amidst the pleasant scenery and the historic splendour of the venue, it’s often overlooked what a tough venue it is, and more than a few riders were pleased to get through without spills and with a decent score for the championship.

Once again, the hosting Salop Motor Club had provided a fantastically prepared venue, although, as expected by the track’s reputation, it became a tough challenge each day. Fortunately, the forecasted thunderstorms mostly passed the venue by, with only a few brief showers.

The Fix Auto UK Pro class saw Josh Spinks (Triumph West London) carry a narrow six-point lead over Christopher Mills (Mills Racing Yamaha), although on the site where Mills took a brilliant double moto win last year, the momentum was with the championship chaser.

Both riders had some tough competition however, with some noteable debutantes, Todd Kellett on his factory backed Yamaha making a rare UK motocross appearance, whilst the intrigue was with 15-year old Anglo-Swede Freddie Bartlett, his Sevenseven2 Kawasaki team truly throwing him at the deep end as he took to the track on a stock KX 450!

Added into the mix were round one winner Jamie Carpenter (Crendon Tru7 Honda), whilst SC Sportshomes Husqvarna duo Tristan Purdon and Charlie Heyman were both looking for a good result.

Qualifying went the way of a very methodical Kellett, who blitzed the track early, showing some great lines with a 2.08.299 lap time and forcing everyone else to play catch up.
Whilst Kellett continued with some practice laps, both Mills and Heyman got close, but no cigar, with less than half a second covering the top three!

As the gathered for moto one it was Jamie Carpenter who grabbed the early lead from Kellett, Heyman, Purdon and Carlton Husband on his Phoenix Tools Fantic.

Carpenter’s day was short lived, however, as he hit some trouble near the bottom of the Hawkstone Hill, touring back to the paddock on the third lap before he withdrew for the day.

This left Kellett in the lead for a brief period before the advancing Purdon was able to fight to the lead, as Kellett dropped back. Seemingly struggling for speed, he then opted to pit mid-race for emergency bike repairs, setting him back one lap as he rejoined to finish the moto in nineteenth position.

This left Purdon as the runaway leader from Heyman, but the momentum was gathering further back as Mills advanced after a tough start, closely followed by Spinks who was in close contest with Bartlett, who had settled in nicely on the 450 and was making progress.

Mills was able to break clear to second and string together consistently fast laps to bring the gap to five seconds on the final lap, but Purdon had enough in the tank to hold on for victory. Heyman was a little further behind in third, falling away from the leaders but still putting in a solid few laps to take a comfortable third from Carlton Husband, who had advanced to fourth.

Just a few seconds back, Freddie Bartlett took a brilliant fifth after battling with the red plate holder, Josh Spinks. In the fight between youth and experience, perhaps Spinks was thinking of the long game in the championship, but this was certainly not to discredit Bartlett, who had fought through the leaders well after a steady start, and was certainly making those in attendance take notice. It was worth remembering this was a rider who, by his age, could still be in the 85cc classes.

Another rapidly advancing rider was Ben Mustoe, who had a poor start but brought his ASA Gas Gas through into eighth after a bad start. Mustoe had also been observed practising that old Grand Prix trick of tagging along with a faster rider in qualifying, spending a couple of laps chasing fellow West Country star Kellett to learn some lines!

That was it for Mustoe’s impressive day as he sat out moto two, which turned into something of an attritional affair.

Christopher Mills had a much better start as he holeshot from Purdon and Heyman, with Dan Thornhill getting a good launch on his Chambers KTM.

As the multiple South African champion Purdon chased Mills into the woods, behind there was trouble as Thornhill clipped a wheel in the second corner and went down, with the unfortunate Harry Bradley right behind him, who was left with nowhere to go as he piled into Thornhill’s downed bike and hit the sand hard.

Everyone else filtered by, but on the opening lap, Purdon then stuck a great move on Mills to quickly snatch the lead.

He’d looked strong in Moto One, and once again, Purdon looked fast and effective on the tough track, as a threatening Mills, who once again was finding some good lines, settled in a couple of seconds back.

Behind the two leaders, things were getting tough. After gating fifth, Kellett was struggling to get into a rhythm, so he wisely parked the bike at the start of the third lap.

Shortly after, Bartlett’s day came to an abrupt end. After fighting past Husband and Tyla Hooley into fourth, he stumped his leg badly, abruptly dropping his pace. With the track getting relentlessly tough, Bartlett wisely opted to retire to the pits. A real shame, but his racecraft during the day had certainly made the spectators take note!

Heyman was running a strong third, however, behind him, a Phoenix Tools battle was developing as another impressive youngster, Josh Vail, was starting to hustle Husband, and the youngster on the team eventually got past the senior rider. Husband was able to stay fifth, though, as he kept Tyla Hooley at bay, the young Triumph rider impressive in sixth as he started to really show some of the speed and form he was carrying before last season’s injury woes.

Behind all this, though, Josh Spinks had suffered a poor start and, on a track not entirely to his liking, was struggling in the early stages.

With a championship on the line and Mills carrying a huge advantage in the sand, Spinks knew damage limitation was important as he picked his way into the top ten, eventually passing Raife Broadley for seventh after it seemed at one stage the Fantic two-stroke was a little bit out of range.

At the front, however, Mills knew his second would give him the red plate, but could he go one better, ace snatch the overall win?

He certainly tried as he began to push Purdon in the closing laps, but the brilliant South African was too good on the day, and was able to manage his pace to maintain a cushion and snatch the overall with two wins. Mills followed in second, whilst Heyman continued his impressive day to take another solid third place for the final podium spot.

The Clubman class kicked off the weekend’s action, as series leader Elliott Pugh took the first moto win, sharing the first day honours with wildcard Harry George.

However, the third moto of the weekend saw drama as Pugh retired after picking up an injury, having to sit out the remainder of the weekend. George took the third moto win whilst the impressive Henry Partridge scored the final moto.

The double was enough to give George the overall, whilst Ryan Christian’s consistent podium finishes in the motos gave him second overall, just ahead of Lee Clarkson, whose impressive second place in the first moto was enough to secure his podium spot. Pugh’s double DNF drops him to fourth in the series, with Lee Clarkson taking the top spot from Ryan Christian and Matt Fuller, only 26 points separating them!

Amateur MX1 was all about the championship big hitters as Scott Aldridge extended his fine form, taking three moto wins and showing some fantastic form. The clean sweep was denied in moto two, when Shrewsbury star Charlie Hamlet took the win on his local turf, eventually finishing third overall behind Ben Knight, whose consistent finishes gave him the second spot.

The podium echoes the title race, Aldridge’s great day in the Shropshire sand extends his championship lead to 41 points over Knight, with Hamlet 88 points down to stay in contention.

Amateur MX2 was a much closer affair with three different moto winners, Henry Siddiqui, Syd Putnam, and, like MX1, another Shrewsbury star, Zac Stealey, taking a moto win.

One rider who missed out on victory was last year’s MXY2 champion, Beau Brown, but two second places left him handily placed in the deciding final moto.

As Stealey powered through to the win, he got himself onto the final podium step ahead of Siddiqui, whilst Brown took another second place to secure the second spot on the podium.

Winning honours therefore went to Putnam, who took third, his third one of the weekend, which, coupled with his second moto victory, gave him a hard-fought overall.

Stealey increases his title lead to 68 points from Jonathan Roderick-Evans, with Leon Williams third.

The 125s turned into yet another battle between series leader Charlie Richmond and Matt Bayliss. The blend of youth and experience fought away all weekend, Richmond again coming out on top with three motos; however, Bayliss stopped the clean sweep by snatching a moto win.

The battle for third was a little closer. Jimmy Margetson took a brace of second-place finishes, although on Sunday, Ryan Waggot initially challenged until a small spill cost him valuable points, Margetson narrowly snatching the final podium spot.

Incredibly, despite winning every overall round, Richmond is only 20 points ahead of Bayliss, with every moto now seemingly of vital importance!
Maison Jones’ hard work appears to be paying off as the Welsh wonder jumps up to third, tied on points with another young gun, the Cornish flyer Zane Stephens.

MXY2 saw George Corke snatch the overall win with two motos, whilst series leader Ollie Bubb snatched the second moto.

Sunday’s motos started with Rhys Whyment in dominant form as he swept to the moto win, a result that bumped him up to fifth overall on the weekend.

With the overall at stake, the Hawkstone circuit proved to take no prisoners, as Corke took the overall win by winning the last race, whilst Bubb was left to rue a late mistake which cost him valuable points; he took second.

Will Haddock’s impressive season continued, third in the final moto meant he tied on points with Lewis Proud, who finished closely behind him, Haddock’s better final moto serving as the tie breaker.

In the title race, Haddock sits just 48 points behind in third, whilst the gap between red plate holder Ollie Bubb and George Corke is a mere 8 points!

The Big Wheel 85 class is shaping up to be a real classic, with six riders still with potential title aspirations.

Hawkstone saw four points separating the podium finishers as Joel Winstanley-Dawson and Harley Marczak battled across the weekend, in a closely fought and occasionally ill-tempered affair.

Differences were settled by the end of the weekend, however, as the two tied on points. Marczak’s second moto win gave him a shot at the overall, but Winstanley-Dawson had slightly better consistency; he took second in the final moto to tie on points with Marczak, taking the tie-break in the final moto.

Olly Waters held onto his title lead with third overall, also winning the first moto, whilst the impressive Brian Giles really got into the swing of things on Sunday with two comfortable wins boosting him to fourth overall behind Waters, with Archie Stapley and Arthur Moore just behind.

Just 18 points separate Waters from Arthur Moor,e who was sixth overall at Hawkstone. Winstanley-Dawson moves up to third from Cohen Jagielski, with Harley Marczak and Archie Stapley rounding out the top six. Only 56 points separate them all!

The Small Wheel 85 class saw Jett Gardiner in fine form as he took three moto wins, whilst series leader and title rival Arthur King took a win in moto three to deny the clean sweep. After a tricky start to the season, Ethan Gawley is starting to make some real inroads. He took a trio of third-place finishes to snatch the third spot from Teddy Merriman, Ricky Barrack and Jamie Currie.
King holds onto the series lead by just 16 points with Gardiner a close threat.

Teddy Merriman has been ever consistent just behind the leaders, sitting 68 points behind in third.

Jack Waters snatched the first moto in the 65s; however, Alfie Cotter’s fine form in the class looked set to continue as he swept to the following two wins.

The final moto saw it all boil down to the wire! Forrest Roberts’ perseverance paid off as he took the victory, whilst Waters made a move to snatch second on Riley Rodgers. This proved to be crucial as Cotter could only get fifth, putting him equal on 170 points with Waters; however, that better second position from Waters in the final moto gave him a dramatic win.

Roberts’ win in the final moto gave him a comfortable third overall from Finley Pope, whilst Riley Rodgers and Mason Foreman packed out the top six.

Despite failing to grab the overall, Cotter still holds a 64 point championship lead from Roberts, with Riley Rodgers a little further back in third.

After the tough test of Hawkstone, all of the championship classes still look pretty wide open as the tension mounts ahead of the penultimate round!

The series moves to the North East and Schoolhouse next time out on the 26/27 July. The jump-filled venue was a huge hit last year, and with so much at stake, the Schoolhouse round looks set to be a cracker!
