Team Isle of Man triumph at 2026 Farleigh Castle Vets MX

Team Isle of Man take victory at the 2026 Farleigh Castle Vets MX, with Danny McCanney, Jamie McCanney and Gavin Hunt claiming the team win.

Back on the weekend of September 12th & 13th, the 2026 Farleigh Castle Vets MX event took place at the iconic Farleigh Castle Motocross track and attracted a huge entry, with all classes full prior to the meeting.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

Entries for this year’s event included many riders from overseas, and making a return after competing in 2025 was Guy Martin, who took part on day one only, plus a rider who unfortunately hadn’t been allowed to ride for several years on British soil was the big Russian Evgeny Bobryshev, who for sure would be one to watch for the many spectators who were in attendance.

Evgeny Bobryshev

Guest of honour at this year’s event was a rider who needs no introduction: American Mike Brown, who normally would have been taking part at this event, but Mike is still recovering from a series crash he had a couple of years ago, but he wanted to come over to show his face to the many British fans that he has. The track was in prime condition for practice and qualifying on the opening day, with the odd light shower or two mixed in, but Sunday was a bit tacky to begin with after rain early morning, and a heavy shower mid-morning made things a bit tricky, but once it dried after the dinner break, the track was nigh on perfect.

Guy Martin

The Main event for the weekend was the Team Race, which consisted of twenty teams, each with three riders, with the best eleven results over the four races counting towards who would be the winners. Qualifying was fast and furious, with positions on the start gate being decided by the fastest time set, and the fastest rider on this occasion was the Ozmo Motorsport Poole Yamaha team rider Lewis Trickett, who would have first choice at the gate.

Team GB rider Rob Holyoake leads the first team race

In the opening Team race it was one of the Team GB riders in the shape of Rob Holyoake who had been drafted in at the last minute to replace the injured Steven Clarke who led from the off and showed great speed at the front on the opening lap, but all the time was being pushed by fellow team rider Brad Anderson who was to get past Holyoake as was the RC Motorhomes rider Lewis Tombs, but a rider who really was making good progress after not the best of starts was the Isle of Man team rider Danny McCanney. Anderson raced away to take the chequered flag from Tombs, with McCanny a close third. In the second moto, Anderson had a flyer in this one and hit the front from the off and was to try and get away at the front on the opening lap, but he was soon to be joined by the Russian Bobryshev for the MX32 Rokit team on the second lap, but the Brit used all his experience and held off the challenge and started to ease away on the third lap and went on to take his second win ahead of Bobryshev, with the HM Racing21 team rider Ben Putnam taking third.

Brad Anderson

At the end of day one, it was the Isle of Man team, with all three riders having good results, who had the lowest score and were leading after two of the four races, but it could all change on the second day.

The third Team race saw a few changes to riders, which included Team GB rider Rob Holyoake, who was out with a serious ankle injury, and taking his place was Ricky Brown. The gate dropped for the third Team race and, this time it was Tombs who led early doors, followed by Danny McCanney and Bobryshev with, Anderson getting pushed out on the first corner there in fourth, but Ando was on it and by the end of the opening lap he had taken the lead. Tombs and Bobryshev had a real tussle on the second lap, with Bobryshev eventually finding a way past and did close in on Anderson on the last lap, but it was too much to ask, and Ando took the win, with third going to Tombs, but up there again, finishing in the top six was two of the Isle of Man riders to keep their chances of winning still on track.

Danny McCanney putting the hammer down for the Isle of Man

In the last Team race, Anderson forced his way into the lead on the second corner and was soon to ease away with a clear track in front of him and went on to make it a clean sweep of wins, but all eyes were on second and third, as they were Jamie and Danny McCanney for the Isle of Man team, who waited for their third team rider, Gavin Hunt, who had done what was required and came home mid-pack, which was to give the Isle of Man team the overall win from the RC Motorhomes team, with Great Britain taking third spot on the podium.

As well as the Team class, there were several other classes that provided some excellent racing during the weekend.

In the Evo Open over 30’s class, there was no stopping Lewis Tombs, who dominated all four races, but there was a good battle going on behind him on several occasions between Sam Chapman and Nigel Kibble, with Leighton Holmes also getting in the mix, but it was Kibble who held his nerve and was rewarded in all four races with second behind Tombs to take second overall, with third overall going to Chapman.

John May

The Evo Open over 40’s class produced some good racing, and back riding after a long time off the bike was Bristonian John May. Michael Ogden had to be at his best in the opening race, as breathing all over him was May, who was pressing Ogden all the time before May came to a halt with a carburettor problem, which let Ogden race away to take the chequered flag, whereas in the second race it was May from Ogden for the first couple of laps before a slight mistake from May was enough for Ogden to get past and he went on to take his second win of the day with Steven Bixby after a long hard battle with James Kensington taking third. The third race on the Sunday was one of the best races of the weekend, as Ogden and May were at it again at the front with virtually nothing between them going into the last lap, but they were not aware of the charging Kensington, who was soon up with them on the last half a lap. May managed to pass Ogden to take the lead, but with less than half a lap remaining, Kensington was flying and passed both Ogden and May to take the win. In the last race, May led from the off and was looking good on the opening couple of laps before he was gradually being caught by Kensington, who had managed to pass Ogden and was soon all over May with just a couple of corners to go, but May just held on to take the win. Ogden took the overall by one point from Kensington, with May taking third overall.

In the Evo Open over 50’s class, it proved a good opening day for Neil Greenland, who was to win both races, but Sunday saw a win each for Dean Warren and Jake Morphey. At the end of the four races, consistency was to decide the overall, and that went to Morphey, with Greenland second overall and Warren taking third overall.

The Evo Ultra Open over 16 class: there was a fine display of riding from Freddie Bartlett, who took both wins on the opening day but was pushed hard in the second race by Drew Stock, who was to chase him right to the line, with Bartlett just taking it by .874 of a second. Race three on the Sunday was nigh on a carbon copy of the second race, with Bartlett put under pressure again from Stock, but Bartlett took the win this time by .871 of a second, whereas in the fourth race both Bartlett and Stock had no answer to Josh Coleman, who raced away from the off to take the chequered flag, but with three wins and a second, Bartlett took the overall from Coleman with Stock third overall.

Craig Pratley, Rob Herring and Mark Eastwood.

In the Evo Ultra over 50’s class there was plenty of talent from years gone by like Rob Herring, Mark Eastwood and Craig Pratley who had set the fastest time in qualifying by some three seconds. Pratley, once he hit the front in the opening race, took a comfortable win from Eastwood, but in the second race, after passing the early leader David Campbell, Pratley looked in control at the front, but Eastwood, who was now in second, had other ideas and was on a charge and soon caught Pratley, which turned into a battle royal on the last couple of corners, but Pratley held it to take the win by just .788 of a second. The third race on Sunday saw Campbell again with the best start from Eastwood and Herring this time with a better start. Eastwood was to pass Campbell on the opening lap, but it wasn’t the best of starts for Pratley in this one, and it got even worse as he went down hard going into the last corner on the opening lap, which was to end his racing for the weekend. Eastwood was to go on untroubled to take the win, and he was a convincing winner in the last race, which was enough to give him the overall from Casey Jones, who had been consistent all weekend, with Campbell just pipping Herring for third overall.

This year the organisers, rather than having just an over-50s Evo Ultra class they split them and ran an over-60s class, which saw the man everybody likes to watch now at the age of 64, American Doug Dubach, compete, and he showed his class and totally dominated the races, winning all four; second overall went to Andy Watkins with Martin King taking third overall.

In the Evo Ultra 4-Stroke over 30’s class, it looked as if Kieran Banks was going to walk away with it after winning both races on day one and the first race on the Sunday, but a disastrous last race put him out of contention for the overall, which went to Elliot Barrs, with Jake Marles second overall and third overall going to Joel Hughes.

Evgeny Bobryshev

The Super Evo Open over 30’s class was pretty good to watch, with Evgeny Bobryshev winning the first three races after some long, hard battles with Brad Anderson, who was also out in this one, but the last race saw Ando hit the front from the off, forcing Jamie Skuse wide at the second corner. Bobryshev was tucked in third and was soon all over Skuse and managed to find a way past, and on the second lap Bobryshev was all over Ando looking for a way past, but he overcooked it exiting the horseshoe corner and spun around. Ando was looking good at the front, but chasing him down was now Skuse, who was having a good ride. Bobryshev had remounted and had fought his way back up into third, but his race was soon to come to an end when his chain came off out in the woods. Ando was to go on to take the win from Skuse a close second with James Lassu coming through the pack taking third. Ando took the overall from Skuse, with James Barnwell third overall.

Jamie Skuse

In the Super Evo Open over 50’s class, Laurence Wiltshire was back riding and was to produce a good performance, winning three of the four races, with Martyn Tucker winning the last race, but Wiltshire was to take the overall from Tucker, with third overall going to Matt French.

The 125 class (up to 96) is always one of the favourite classes with spectators, and this year we saw some thrilling races with Luke Dean in fine form, dealing with different conditions in all four races, taking a clean sweep of wins with Clinton Barrs second overall, just pipping Jordan Barrs by one point, who took third overall.

In the Twinshock over 30’s class, there was no stopping the Red Rocket of Josh Spinks, who was in a class of his own, winning all four races for the overall, with second overall going to Graham Blacklock, who finished second to Spinks in all four races, and third overall went to Tom Moore, whereas in the over 50’s class it was Howard Stanfield who dominated the proceedings, winning all four races, with second overall going to Mark Slade and Miik Davies took third overall.
