Thorpe thumps in Landrake win! 2022 Apico BSMA Nationals Round 2 – Race Report & Results

The Cornish circuit didn’t disappoint with track conditions being almost perfect for the 2 days of racing as the Apico BSMA nationals moved into round two a few hundred miles from round one.

Heavy mist delayed the start a little but it soon cleared to a glorious sunny day. The seniors got things started with the 125 and 250f classes running together and like the first round it was a 125 heading the charge. Harrison Greenough had the 2 stroke singing for all to hear as he took a maximum in the 125 class but also smoked the 4 strokes, Morgan Walters pushed him hard in moto 1 but for the next 3 motos, he could have emulated Carlquist at Namur! Points leader Jamie Kuehn managed to bring it home 2nd overall in the 125’s after some tough races but had Finley Horn, Jake O’Gorman and Alfie Crealock-Lovell been more consistent he could have been looking at losing his grip on the series. Joe Beaumont’s consistency put him behind Horn just off the box but in front of Lovell and O’Gorman. The 250f’s was where the close racing within the group was with both Jay Platt and Walters taking wins, but a little confusion for Walters in the final moto allowed Platt to real him in on the final lap giving him the third win instead of two apiece. Levi Davies ended up behind Kai Reason and Billy Elvin in the first moto but set about netting three 3rd place finishes in the remaining motos to grab the final podium step.

Vets, another mixed group came onto track next with firm favourite in the over 35’s making it clear why as he stormed off to a maximum 4 out of 4 with no challenges all weekend. Alan Pearce joined the fun on his 125 giving Sam Callow something to think about as he ousted Callow from his customary runner up spot by a couple of points as they traded places all weekend. Ian James spent too much time tasting the Cornish soil putting him down the order as his rivals James Jackaman, Sean Ketterill and Ed Lewis all took advantage. In the over 45’s the new old blood was rising to the top as first moto winner and last year’s champ, Darren King took a lap out to pop his knee back in socket allowing Simon Bonser to take moto 2 and the overall after King lost a huge chunk of points. Richard Green had one not so good race but did enough in the other motos to secure 3rd overall. The final moto saw a freak incident between two of the top runners in class, Paul ‘Wildman’ Willis and Bryan Tucker had a collision coming out of the whoop section causing both bikes to become tangled beyond belief leaving Wildman with a no score and Tucker the last points-scoring position. This really opened up the overalls as Martin Curtin and Chris Stemp picked up 4th and 5th with local Scotty Williamson taking another position off Tucker in the overall standings.

BW 85 saw Kai Thorpe all set for a maximum but for a fall while chasing Riley Voase in the 3rd moto. Voase looked every part the winner and un-ruffled by the constant harassment from Thorpe, as Thorpe ramped up the intensity he lost the front end landing off a small tabletop coming into a corner handing an unchallenged win to Voase added to his win at Sherwood. Both Seb Moore and Rocco Hands both suffered DNF’s in motos to take them out of contention for overall honours but it looked like Ashton Somerville had them both beat as he put on showed some great speed just losing out maybe to fitness as the races went on. Noel Brooks and Lewis Evans rounded out the top five with Jonas Brown hot on the tailpipe of Evans.

SW 85 had wildcard Danny Flude stealing the show taking a maximum in a dominant show of determination to get out front from the get-go. Flude had a lot of attention from Mason Jones in the early stages of moto 1 but held firm. Jenson Severn, round 1 winner had poor luck all weekend resulting in a DNF in the final moto after crashing out in the whoops, but not before he put the pressure on Flude in moto 3 for a solid 2nd place finish. Travis Bixby backed up his start to the campaign with a calculated ride for 3rd overall. Archie Congdon showed his track knowledge was on point with some great lines and impressive jumping to nudge Finley Stead down into 5th overall.

Jumping a 65cc bike over the big tabletops of Landrake is no mean feat but for the front runners in the junior class it was all in a days racing. Casey Lister had a lot of attention all weekend from Arthur Moore as the pair dominated the class. Lister had 3 of the 4 wins but Moore managed to take the 3rd moto. Both were untroubled by the rest of the field who in most cases were close to a minute down by the end!. Moors however ended the weekend down in 7th overall after not finishing the final moto giving the results a shakeup. Cohen Jagielski continued to look strong, despite his size getting better as the weekend progressed claiming 3rd overall and keeping his championship hopes for a second consecutive title in 2 separate classes alive. Spencer Newman followed suit with progressing to improve as the weekend went on resulting in 4th overall while Arthur King’s soil sampling on Sunday dropped him to 5th after some great rides Saturday. Theo Stead’s last race performance jumped him up the table to claim 6th benefitting from Moore’s misfortune.

The auto class needed a slight track alteration as one jump was deemed to be too severe for the majority but the steep climbs and other huge jumps were still there to challenge these little warriors. Tommy Wood again took the class to school with a masterclass of riding finishing well ahead of closest rival Mason Foreman. Forman had his hands full of Freddie Gurney in moto 1 but from then he was on it and had a comfortable weekend for 2nd overall. Gurney’s weekend didn’t end as planned after a DNF in the final moto dropping him down the order. Mason Staddon on the super trick Talon/Madison KTM inherited 3rd overall after an ailing bike cut out in the final moto for Charlie Wilcock. Finley Pope’s final push to the weekend gave him the points needed to pip Freddie Graham for 5th overall

The adult classes provided some super close action yet again. In the MX1 it was Billy Wynn who set the pace but was soon overhauled by Harry Bradley and Ryan Voase, Simon Booth got himself into 3rd before a slow starting George Clarke scythed his way through the field to catch Voase for 2nd. Clarke got a gate to flag victory in moto 2 while Bradley worked his way to 2nd, Booth 3rd and Voase 4th. Booth and Josh Greedy headed the field in moto 3 before the freight train of Clarke and Bradley stormed through. The final moto saw a determined Bradley come past the fast-starting Booth and Clarke to take the win.

The MX2 was a straight 4 from 4 for Ben Franklin but the battling to get there was intense after an uneventful first moto it really kicked off in moto 2 with Franklin dropping out of the lead down to 4th while Jake Curtis Stevens led until Adam Harris took over in lap 3 being pushed by Jordan Eccles before he went down and lead till the final lap when the pressure from Franklin became too much. With the action following suit in Sunday’s moto’s it was a surprise to see the 125 of George Hopkins right up there in the mix fighting to podium pie coming away with a 3rd and 4th to reward him with 4th overall. Kieran Yorke wasn’t far behind in 5th overall after a spirited ride in moto 4 to take 3rd.
