Living it large at Landrake! South West MXC – Race Report and Results

The South West Motocross Club was the first club in the region to host a race meeting since the lockdown restrictions were eased at the weekend, and with close to 400 riders over the two days, it proved to be a popular one.

Landrake was in prime condition over the two days and provided a superb venue for the many riders making their return to racing after months out of the saddle, although drizzle on Saturday morning made it tricky for the kids early doors. A minutes silence was held on both days to remember popular club member Ewan George who sadly lost his life a few months back.

The meeting was split into two with Youth racing on Saturday and the Adults on Sunday.

Thirty-one Auto’s made the gate for moto one and it was Riley Ray Barrow who took the chequers in the opening encounter, but Casey Lister fought back to win the remaining two races to take the overall from Barrow and third-placed William Dennis.

Blake Ward-Clarke and Robbie Daly traded race wins in the Junior 65cc class, with Ward-Clarke gaining the upper hand with two victories to Dalys one, but it did go down to the wire with Ward-Clarke fending off Daly by less than two seconds in the final race. West Country racer Zane Stephens would round out the top three in the 35 strong line-up.

There was heaps of talent on show in the Small Wheel 85’s and heading the lot was Joey Benifield who took the overall win over double race winner Reece Jones. Jones would rue a first race, first lap mishap when leading which relegated him down the order and seeing him eventually fight back to fifth. Isaac Ash on his Small Wheel 85 debut had a great day to finish third overall.

Tommy Smith was the early pacesetter in the Big Wheel 85’s notching up the first race win but only by a whisker as Henry Life was less than a second behind at the finish flag with Louis Vincent less than two seconds behind him in a great race.  A lap one issue for Smith in Moto 2 saw him have to battle from outside the top twenty up to eighth but a no show in race three ended his chance of a podium finish. Life would win the second moto by a slender 2 second margin over Harrison Roberts with Ben Mustoe in third. In the final deciding moto Roberts would win out in a close battle over Life and Vincent but with the most consistent three moto’s in was Life who would take the overall from Roberts and Vincent.

The Rookies were crammed full of superfast racers and with so many keen to race the group was split into two.  The racing in the A group was out of the top drawer but it was Louie Kessell who came through the battles with a trio of race wins and the overall, with Alfie Jones second, Jude Morris third and Ty Westcott who was always in the mix in fourth.

In the Rookies B group Jamie Hibberd went through the card to top the podium ahead of Thomas Williams and Oliver Bordessa.

On Saturday there was also an Open/Evo support class which saw Joe Clayton go 1-1-1 finishing ahead of Callum Gordon on each occasion with Giles Richards nailing the final podium spot.

Sunday saw the arrival of the big guns with a good entry of MX Nationals and British Championship contenders ready and raring to duke it out on West Country soil.

First blood went the way of Dan Thornhill in the opening MX1 moto but Liam Knight fought back to claim the remaining race victories and the overall. Thornhill would finish second with local racer Josh Taylor getting right in the mix and riding well for third.

The MX2 class looked quite similar to the previous days Rookie class with the Young guns super keen to get more laps under their belt. Louie Kessell matched his previous day’s performance by racking up another three race wins making it a perfect weekend for him while Jude Morris moved up a spot for second with Alfie Jones in third.

David Ford rode a stormer to take the Vets win with two race victories with Simon Matta in second with one race win and Richard Green in third.

In the Inters Ryan Davis was unstoppable firing in a full set of race wins on his way to the overall. Lee Hocking would finish second getting the edge over Ashley Locke as they were tied on points going into the final moto.

Jack Heath piled in with two great wins to open the weekend in the Novice class but a DNF in the final moto put pay to his podium credentials. Jak Ford would save his best for last, winning the last race and bagging the overall with it from Luke Horsey and John Haxton.
