Henry’s hatful! 2022 Apico BSMA Nationals Round 3 – Race Report & Results

The Apico BSMA National had a last-minute venue change to Brookthorpe after planning issues forced the Wroxton circuit to cancel and the BSMA would like to extend their gratitude to Mike Truman for the use of the immaculately turned out facility.

Report and Images by Ady Cowshall – Images of Speed

Mother Nature played ball with a far better than forecast weekend and the racing across all classes was spectacular! It was kicked off with a lovely tribute to Andy Marchant, 2-time BSMA champion with a parade lap led out by close friend Jamie Dobson.

The MX2 class had the benefit of the groomed circuit first with Henry Williams the AMCA championship team Apex GasGas rider setting a pace unrivalled by even the MX1 class, winning everything in convincing style. Adam Harris put up a gallant effort on his 2 stroke Fantic being the best of the rest after some intense battles through the weekend with Lee Truman. Ready to pounce on any mistakes, Jaydon Murphy kept the pressure on along with Jake Curtis-Stevens, both getting in on the action. Harvey James was just on the outside looking in but kept his championship hopes alive rounding out the weekend in sixth.

With the track ruffing up quickly the MX1 boys started searching for those wider lines with Ryan Voase’s lightning reflex’s putting him out front on both Saturday races it was down to the youthful exuberance of Luke Sturgeon and George Clarke to take the race wins. Voase took 2nd in moto1, his best result of the weekend, backing it up with a 3rd Sunday to give him 3rd overall. Mark Young on a borrowed bike struggled with set-up on what he described as riding a ‘pogo stick’ on Saturday but came back on Sunday with a set-up dialled in to take both race wins and the overall, tying on points with Sturgeon who struggled coming through the field from a poor start in the final moto. Josh Greedy fell foul to bike issues on Sunday after putting in two solid rides Saturday, a crash knocked his front pipe off in moto 3 and then a heavy landing saw him miraculously still clearing the big triple with bars fit for the ‘Tour de France’!

The senior group running both 250f and 125 together saw fastest qualifier Toby English on the 125 blitz the field in both Saturday’s motos but it all fell apart as Sunday’s first moto had him at the back of the field on lap one by 3/4 of a lap and it was 3 laps before he caught the tail-enders and started to pull up through! Had Jake OGorman not had a bike issue in race one he could well have been on the top step, winning both races Sunday and following English home on Saturday in the second. Morgan Walters was the overall winner of both groups with 4 solid finishes at the sharp end. Both groups showed a lot of inconsistency really mixing up the overalls, it was Joe Beaumont taking the 125 honours ahead of Jamie Kuehn and Alfie Crealock-Lovell while Ellis Bubb muscled his 250f round for 2nd overall ahead of Kai Reason who went down while leading on Sunday.

The dual age group vets had some rapid wildcards entered and a missing Darren King so BSMA pride was placed solely on the shoulders of Jamie Dobson. Fastest qualifier was AMCA king Gary Davies but by less than a second from Dobson. The gate dropped and it was Davies and Rob Lewis locking bars with Dobson right there, but Davies went missing leaving an easy victory for Lewis after Dobson got tangled up with a lapper sustaining some nasty footpeg grazes in the process. LRT’s Simon Lane puled up from a poor start to pinch 2nd spot from regular Sam Callow while Davies closed in in 4th. Lewis couldn’t answer Davies’s pace in moto 2 and settled for 2nd while Lane diced with Dobson. Sunday saw a rested Dobson hit form as he fended off the efforts of Davies for the win and then it went to Davies fending off Dobson for the final encounter. Lewis took a third and DNF after a tip oversaw him hobble away with a tweaked knee. Lee Martin mixed it up at the front end there waiting for any mistakes and hounding Callow.

Small wheel 85 hit the track next and fastest qualifier by far was Harley Prickett but things went Pete Tong as he hit the deck, in turn, two of moto one leaving him dead last and only able to claw his way back through to finish 6th. So it looked like one of three riders had the chance to snatch overall victory from Prickett’s misfortune. Cameron Chapman, Jack Leese and back from injury Jenson Severn. Chapman took the win in the first, followed by Leese and Severn. From then on in it was Prickett doing all the winning, but Prickett needed each to have at least one bad moto. Severn obliged in moto 2, Chapman in moto 3 and Leese was edged out on both Sunday’s motos by a rejuvenated Severn handing a 2 point advantage to Prickett for the overall.

Big wheel action saw another tie break situation for the overall. 2 wins apiece for Kai Thorpe and Riley Voase and some great battles from two riders with opposing styles. Thorpe clung on to win moto1 by a couple of bike lengths while moto 2 and 3 were taken by Voase aided in one by a fall from Thorpe, Thorpe then took the final moto and overall. Jack Evans returned to BSMA action as a wildcard with newfound pace, losing out to Noel Brooks after cross rutting in the dying stages of moto 1 then notching up two 3rd places to net 3rd overall from Brooks. A stronger day on Sunday for Lewis Evans got him a top 5 while Rocco Hands had clutch issues and soil samples before getting it all together at the end of the weekend with a blistering 3rd

Autos saw a huge lineup once again and once again Tommy Wood was the one to beat. Wood took another maximum but did have to work a bit harder than usual to keep Charlie Wilcock and Mason Staddon at bay. Wilcock closing right in at the flag on the final moto after a backmarker took Wood’s line to the flag. But taking nothing away from Wood yet again another display of class riding in the huge ruts. Mason Foreman pulled a 3rd out of the bag in moto three to pip Preston Chorley to 4th overall.

The 65cc Juniors had the roughest track to deal with but Casey Lister took it all in his stride, completely annihilating the field each time out despite Cohen Jagielski’s attempts to run at the front. Jagielski equally had his place secured in second by a similar margin and as one of the youngest riders in class has time on his side. Less than a handful of points separated 3rd and 4th as William Dennis and Arthur King were never far from each other all weekend. The super stylish Terry Challinor’s hopes for a top 5 were dashed after a 19th in moto2while Harley Ince improved his finishes over the weekend to take that 5th spot.
