CT Events Season Sign off & Matt Murphy Memorial Motocross – Race Report & Results

There was a very relaxed and chilled out atmosphere at Hawkstone Park last weekend at the CT Events season finale, as there were no championships at stake, and riders got to ride the full circuit before putting their bikes into hibernation for the winter.

There was a Twinshock Class incorporated into the event in memory of the late Matt Murphy, and around 20 riders enjoyed their day in the sand, with Matts family and friends meeting up for the tenth anniversary.

The Salop Club had made quite a few improvements to the track since our last visit, with the far whoops gone and the full hill in use, which went right at the top cutting out the left kink, and it was the best I have seen it in a long time. The dry weather also helped, and there was even grass on the circuit, which soon disappeared after the 200 riders completed practice. CT Events put together a great six race format with five blocks over the weekend, with just a couple of injuries and everyone seemed to love it.

There were two full Novice groups, and in Novice 1, consistency was the name of the game as Mitchell Collins put together a set of top five finishes to take the win, with Aiden Carney in second. A DNF for Richard Roberts in race three, after winning the other four races put him down in third overall.

In Novice 2, Jake Thornton took the overall victory, winning two out of five. Guitar Webster was second, after winning the final race. Danny Webster won race three and took third, with race two winner George Clarke in fourth.

On Saturday we were treated to a Twinshock masterclass in the Matt Murphy Memorial by Jimmy Margetson, who was riding the Ken Sourbutts Honda, and took all three wins, setting times that would have put him in the top six of all the modern bike classes. Unfortunately, Jimmy couldn’t ride the Sunday due to a family commitment. So, this gave the other riders an opportunity to win, and Scotlands James Haddow, took it by winning both Sunday races, claiming victory by just two points from Sam Vickers on the Yamaha. Another Scot, Craig Smith rode well in the sand to claim third. And fourth was Irelands Willie Burgess, who seized his bike in race one, before turning out the spare for the rest of the weekend. The Matt Murphy Memorial trophy was awarded by Gary, Lauren, and Shaun Murphy to Phil Roberts for his endeavour and for finishing all five Hawkstone races as one of the elder statesmen of the twinshock fraternity. It was also good to see our Italian friends Massimo Signorin and Pietro Mistrigo taking part and enjoying the experience.

Lee Martin won three from five in the Vets Over 40 class to take the win from Julian Freeberne who finished each race in the top three in second, with David Wilcox in third. Paul Johnston was the star of the show though on his 89 Honda 500, as he tore round the circuit making it look easy, and took two race wins, but the clutch finally gave up the ghost, leaving him unable to do the final race.

Ady Bradley made it look like a walk in the park as he stormed to five wins in the Vets Over 50’s on his Suzuki. Second place went to Scotlands James Whitelaw, with Tony Houseman in third, and then a whole glut of riders Ewan Johnston, David Hopkins, Craig Smith and Mike Allport only a few points apart.

Reece Jones won both Sunday races which helped him take the overall win in the 125’s by just four points from Wesley McGavin in second.
Rob Holyoake had won all three of Saturdays races but wasn’t riding on Sunday, which meant Joel Fisher took third followed by Harry Barker and Simnon Booth.

The 250 two strokes saw Rory Jones take all five wins, with Corey Nemeth pushing him hard in second and Patrick Jackson in third.

The MX1 class was won by Jayden Ashwell with five clean wins with Jack Benniston in second and Daniel Parry in third from Logan Wilcox and Josh Greedy.

Dylan Spencer took the MX2 class with three wins. Race one winner Bayliss Utting took second from Alfie Calvert and Corey Collins, with race two winner Mackenzie Marshall in fifth.

It was a great end to the season, and credit to the club for putting on this extra event at the world-famous Hawkstone Park.
