Walk in the Park! Thomas Brown Memorial Motocross – Race Report and Results

by adminSeptember 10, 2018

All roads led to Cumbria this weekend and Route 44 Haverigg for the second running of the Thomas Brown memorial. Nearly 200 riders entered had entered, and countless more on site to watch and for Thomas’s legendary after party all was set for a mega weekend.

A huge amount of background work had been done, by too many to mention, but namely Samantha Brown and Karen Law and their families. Even the Cumbrian weather could not spoil spirits as racing got underway on Saturday following a gathering in the marque around Thomas’s #44 KTM 125 machine.

The Cumbria Mx club had the Route 44 track looking perfect, 1 year on from a total re-design and rename in Thomas’s honour ‘the peoples track’, and with emphasis on a fun weekend the Autos were first up to hit the sand.

Finlay Pickering has been virtually unstoppable around the Route 44 circuit this year, and with a moto 1 victory it appeared that was to continue, however Lucas Lee was having other ideas taking 2 race victories over the weekend. The overall came down to race 5 on Sunday and it was Pickering taking the win and the top podium step by a tight margin. Making the long trip from Scotland, Finlay Easton was solid all weekend to take the final podium place just ahead of Moto 1 second place rider Leo Self. Fair play to the Auto racers as they got the worst of the weather and the roughest of the track, a great learning curve for them. A special mention must go to Young Vinnie Anderson making his first race appearance. The son of Brad, I’m sure we will hear this name a few more times in future, hope you enjoyed it.

Carlton Husband A class winner, as big crowd looks on.

The 65’s class shows Ryan Waggott taking the overall with 4 out of 5 race wins, however, race 5 winner Jamie Keith kept him honest all weekend ready to pounce on any slip up. With the step up to the 85 Small Wheel class looming for Waggott, he looks like leaving his 65 days on the up. Dylan Davidson completed the podium with a 3-4-3-3-3 score card.

Our first perfect weekend in the Small Wheel 85 class, the one to do it…West Cumbrian Robbie Park, even mixing it up with the quick big wheel boys in most races, it was an great weekend for the whole Park family. Jake Walker and Grace Richards battled out the final podium places with Walker coming out on top by the end of the day Sunday.

The 85 B/W class was always going to be a shoot out between North East duo Sam Atkinson and recently crowned Mx Nationals S/W Champion Ollie Colmer stepping up onto the B/W, once Oliver Barr wasn’t on the gate for Moto2. Atkinson it was completing a perfect 5 race maximum points haul despite being run close by Barr in Moto 1. Colmer went 3-2-2-2-2 to take second overall behind his mate, with Ellis McMaster completing the podium. Some great racing in the 85 combined class including an impressive 5th in the big wheel class for Jordan Acton who is improving all the time.

Luke Edgar C under 30s

Denny Rapson was in a different league in the Rookies class, maximum points and clear in every race, this lad has some serious speed and the fastest lap of any class in the first block of racing on Saturday, definitely one to watch when stepping up into the adult classes. With Rapson gone, a very very impressive Jack Abbott took his liking to a new KTM machine and had a solid series of results to take second overall with Liam Sommerville in third. Ben Blackburn could have been in the mix had it not been for a moto 1 8th place. Also a get well soon to Adam Slavin who had a tumble on Sunday in the wave section.

The Adult C over 30s class was next up and had another maximum man. We don’t see Michael Graham much in Cumbria now, however he does not appear to have lost any of his speed taking maximum points. Facebook live legend Nigel Smorfitt improved as the weekend went on and with 2 second places on Sunday took the next step on the box. Opposite to that, after a strong Saturday Karl Rodgerson fell away  a bit on Sunday and had to settle for third overall.

Jack Abbott youth class ahead of Brad Knowles

The under 30s C class was taken by West Cumbrian Kylan Walker with a 1-1-1-1-4 scorecard, Lewis Mchale has been in great form this season but had to settle for second despite going 3-2-1 in Sundays races. Completing the podium was Daz Birbeck. Ryan Metcalf was unlucky not to be involved after a second in moto1. It was great to see so many of Thomas’s friends and fellow C class racers turning out and supporting this event, its been a long time since we have seen nearly 2 full c class gates in Cumbria, top marks lads.

Now the Adult B class in Cumbria this year has been almost impossible to call as the gate drops, and this weekend was to be no different with even more riders thrown into the mix. 4 different race winners out of 5 races and 2 of them not even in the top 10 overall. North East racer Keith Noble had a great Sunday going 1-1-2 to take the top podium step only 2 points ahead of moto 5 winner Tony Cadman. Third went to Ben Southward. Andrew Craig and Chris Muir were the other 2 race winners finishing 13th and 18th overall respectively.

So the final class of the block and of the weekend was the A class, and a huge crowd amassed on the banking waiting for battle to commence. 3 different race winners, bar banging, paddock discussions, fence breaking, thrown in with some serious speed and bike craft, this class had it all. Race winners and British Championship contenders Husband, Anderson and Hague added to our local racers and top class riders travelling long distances, as the gate dropped. By the end of Sunday Carlton Husband was the man to take the trophy, with a 1-2-1-1-4 score card. Husband and adopted Cumbrian Brad Anderson had two great battles on Saturday in a 4stroke v 2 stroke battle royal, both winning one race each before Anderson sat Sundays racing out. The climax of racing on Sunday was moto 5 of the A class, Jay Hague was the winner in a super battle which had everything throughout the pack, including a Husband argument with a fence and a mad charge through the pack. Brad Todd will be happy to get a solid weekend in the books to take second overall for the weekend  with Hague in third. John Robson deserves a mention for a moto ridden without a seat,  also Declan Hunter for putting his 125 machine in the mix.

Following racing on Saturday, was a evening and night full of entertainment and fun for racers, family and friend’s to enjoy, and I’m sure there were some sore heads the following morning. A raffle with a huge array of prizes donated from all over the country and an Auction of race shirt’s from top riders including Tyla Rattray, Shaun Simpson and a Thomas Brown shirt, with all proceeds going into the Thomas Brown fund.

This weekend is gathering a reputation as being one, if not the best in the north, although in circumstances we wish were different. Be sure not to miss this next year. TB44.
