Simpson’s Conquest. Maxxis British Motocross Championships – Rundown and Results

by adminMarch 10, 2019

The opening round of the ACU Maxxis British Motocross Championships proved to be survival of the toughest as the wet and heavy conditions tested man and machinery to it’s Extreme at the Fatcats Motoparc today.

Shaun Simpson aboard his RFX KTM looked ultra quick from the offset, and these type of conditions certainly suit the Scotsman as he blasted to the quickest time in qualifying, from Todd Kellett less than a second behind.

Come race time Simpson was in no mood to mess around pulling to the front of the field where he stayed for the entire Moto 1. Lewis Tombs and his Buildbase Honda are certainly hooking up off the mesh starts, but after holding second early doors, he dropped back to fifth. Harri Kullas followed on from his MX Nationals victory for second in race one ahead of BOS Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle, who had to work his way through the field. Mel Pocock made a good MX1 Maxxis debut with 4th, while Brad Todd impressed with 6th.

There was a shock leader early on in Moto 2 as Jake Millward pulled the holeshot and kept control in the lead, and looked comfortable there too. It took Simpson 4 laps to get by Millward and into the lead and while this was going on a whole host of Moto 1 front runners were falling by the wayside including Kullas, Pocock and Shipton.  Closing in on the front two was Searle who moved passed Millward on lap 6 and started the chase for the lead. Searle’s rise to the top didn’t have to wait long though as Simpson went down gifting the Kawasaki rider the lead and Millward second again. Simpson was soon back into second, but Searle controlled the remainder of the race for the win, from Simpson, Millward, Tombs, Ryan Houghton and the fast-starting Dan Thornhill.

With a 1-2 scorechart, it was Simpson who would take the round 1 overall, from Searle in second and a well-deserved podium spot for Lewis Tombs in third, with Millward riding a stormer for 4th and Houghton 5th.

There was less than a second splitting the top three MX2 racers in Qualifying with Revo Husqvarna’s Dylan Walsh taking pole, from Conrad Mewse and Bas Vaessen.

It was Ashton Dickinson who headed the field for the early part of Moto 1, but by lap 2 Dutchman Bas Vassen was out front. By lap 5 it was Vassen’s Hitachi KTM teammate and reigning MX2 champ Mewse who was back in the lead, although he never pulled a clear lead with Mewse just a second ahead when they went passed the chequers. Alvin Ostlund would finish third just ahead of Martin Barr in 4th, with Walsh 5th, with Dickinson putting in a terrific performance for 6th.

Vaessen would gain his revenge in Moto2 taking the victory over Mewse and the overall with it, as Conrad made hard work of it, having to fight through the field after a poor start. Ostland would once again finish third in the moto to stand on the third spot of the podium for Revo Husqvarna, with his Kiwi teammate Walsh 4th in race two with Josh Gilbert in 5th and Martin Barr 6th.

In the super stacked MXY2 group Joel Rizzi showed exactly why he is so highly rated by going 1-1 for the overall onboard his RFX KTM. Dominic Lancett put in a good performance for second overall, ahead of Kyle Mcnichol in third, Ike Carter 4th and Max Ingram who had a fantastic 2nd in Moto 2 5th.
