Shaun’s right had clipped the fencing on the inside of turn one which created a domino effect on the following pack, sending at least ten riders into the trees on the outside of the track, with one needing an Air Ambulance. The race was stopped and restarted over an hour later.

Red Plate holder Simmo’ fractured a bone in his right hand, and a sharpened footpeg clearly ripped through his shirt into his left tricep. Championship runner up Tommy Searle was also involved in the accident and also sustained some injuries, however, needing to keep a hand on the leaders Red Plate and after some considerable thought, Simpson opted to ride on in a damage limitation effort.

Taped up, battered, bruised and bloodied, Simmo’ managed a painful 7-4 score to take 4th overall on the day, and while Searle won the event overall with 3-1, Simpson is still only 5 points in arrears in P2 in the championship.

With four rounds to go and 200 points still at stake, the championship is still very much alive, though Simpson will not be racing in the MXGP of Russia or Latvia and the team will take a view on the German MXGP in due course.
