Shaun Simpson and Dylan Walsh put in stand out performances at Hawkstone Park to take their respective MX1 and MX2 wins at the 6th round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championships supported by Pro Clean yesterday.

Simpson, who has been in a season-long battle with Tommy Searle, was a dominant force at the famous Shropshire venue, making two fast starts before checking out at the head of the field by big margins to take each moto victory and the overall.

Red Plate holder Searle has been struggling too from injury and did a great damage limitation job with a 2-2 scorecard and keep his series lead, but he was fortunate in Moto 1 with Elliott Banks-Browne suffering from a blown motor with two laps to go as he was looking good in second. Harri Kullas another racer riding through the pain barrier pulled the moto 1 holeshot and finished the first moto in third, and with a fourth in the second moto came good for third overall.

Harri Kullas was quickest out of the gate in both MX1 Races

Jake Nicholls on his comeback Maxxis race went down early in the first moto but hauled his way back to eighth and followed that up with a solid third in Moto 2 for fourth overall. Jake Millward continued his great season with a pair of fifths and fifth overall, while Mel Pocock followed up a superb fourth in the first moto with a sixth for the same spot overall. Jason Meara backed up his stunning MX Nationals Pro debut last week for seventh overall for the Phoenix Tools Kawasaki team with Jake Shipton in eighth.

Jake Nicholls made his return to the British Championship and took fourth overall in the MX1 class just missing out on the podium

The Revo Husqvarna duo of Dylan Walsh and Alvin Östlund were a class act in MX2, with the Kiwi Walsh grabbing both holeshot to flag victories with Östlund chasing him just a few seconds behind on each occasion for a 1-2 overall from the pair. Buildbase Honda’s Josh Gilbert had nothing in reply to the lead combo but was the best of the rest going 3-3 for the third position on the podium. In moto one Martin Barr and Taylor Hammal were joined at the hip as they fought their way up to fourth and fifth from well down the order, moving their way past the fast-starting Ashton Dickinson on the penultimate lap relegating him to sixth.

Ashton Dickinson powered his way to taking the overall in the MX2 Expert class

Hammal would crash out early in Moto 2 after a being in the top six on lap one, with Barr and Ashton resuming their positions at the sharp end of the field in fourth and fifth for the same positions overall. Liam Knight showed well for sixth overall while Tom Neal rode a stormer for seventh, with Michael Ellis eighth.

Walsh now leads his team mate Östlund by 12 points in the series with Gilbert 34 points behind the Red Plate holder with two rounds still to go.

The MXY2 class once again showcased the abundance of emerging talent in the UK right now with Race FX Ktm’s Joel Rizzi taking first blood and the chequers in Moto 1 from Kyle McNichol, Jack Grayshon, Ike Carter and Josh Peters.

Kyle McNichol took his first overall at Hawkstone in the MX2 Youth Championship

With a red flag halting proceedings six minutes into Moto 2, everyone had to go again and this time it was Carter with the upper hand taking the win from McNichol, Grayshon, Rizzi and Tom Murphy. With a 2-2 scorecard it would be McNichol who would take a well deserved overall victory just a point ahead of Carter in second, with Rizzi third and Grayshon fourth.

In the support class Stephen Wade went 1-1 to take the overall over Harry Bradley and Kieran Cooke.

The championship now moves onto the legendary Foxhills circuit in Wiltshire for the 7th and penultimate round on the 11th August.
