Searle and Gilbert rule at Blaxhall! Maxxis British Motocross Championship Round 4 – Race Report and Results

WP

The fourth round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championships which took place at Blaxhall yesterday was marred by a huge first bend crash in the opening MX1 moto.

As the racers throttled into the first bend it is thought Shaun Simpson clipped a post on the inside of the track sending him into the crowd of riders who in turn were thrust outside the track in a big heap. Simpson, Tommy Searle, Lewis Tombs and Ryan Houghton all received injuries from the crash with Houghton coming off the worst suffering from a broken femur and a broken bone in his neck.

The riders regrouped after an hour for the restart with many battered and bruised racers taking to the track to keep their championship hopes in check. It was Jake Millward who once again made the start, but unlike other moto’s where the MXGP big guns reeled him in, this time he kept his cool and took an excellent gate to flag moto win, followed by another rider who had his best ever Maxxis result Jake Shipton. Tommy Searle fought through the field to third while Simpson clearly struggling from the aftermath of the earlier crash dropped down the order to seventh. Brad Anderson did it for the 2 Smokers in fourth with Mel Pocock fifth.

Tommy Searle was in a determined mood in Moto 2 and took control early doors and the lead from start to finish for the overall. Shaun Simpson was again on the tail of his rival but coming up behind him was the Estonian freight train of Harri Kullas and Gert Krestinov, both who were down the order on the first lap. Kullas would move into second with Krestinov behind him in third which was enough to earn the Phoenix Tools Kawasaki rider second overall. Simpson would settle into fourth ahead of Pocock and Anderson who would claim the number 3 spot on the podium. James Dunn also had a great day finishing in sixth overall.  Moto 1 pacesetters Millward and Shipton were both out of the points.

Ashton Dickinson was the first to show in the opening MX2 race and held the lead until lap 5 when Alvin Ostlund made his way to the front, only for him to suffer a DNF. Taking advantage of the Revo Husqvarna rider’s woes was Josh Gilbert who moved into the top spot and pulled clear for the moto win from Kiwi racer Dylan Walsh, Martin Barr, Taylor Hammal and Dickinson in 5th.

Josh Gilbert claims his first ever Maxxis Overall

Another rider looking to make up for a non-scoring race 1 was Bas Vaesson who looked a class act and never looked back after a good start to take the moto victory from Ostlund, Walsh, Gilbert and Dickinson. So the podium would see Gilbert take his first ever Maxxis overall, from Walsh with Dickinson making his first ever Maxxis podium with a fantastic day of racing from him. Hammal and Barr would both suffer mechanical problems while in contention.

Ike Carter would continue his superb season with a win in the MXY2 class. Joel Rizzi took the chequers in Moto 1 but a fall in the early stages of Moto 2 meant he was on the back foot and with Carter riding fantastically at the front it was a bridge too far for the RFX KTM rider. So it was Carter and Rizzi taking the top two positions with Josh Peters riding a blinder for third overall.

The 85’s were a great addition to the racecard, and in the Big Wheel 85’s it was Sam Atkinson who reigned supreme ahead of Bailey Johnston and Charlie Palmer. In the Small Wheels Ben Mustoe and Tyla Hooley battled it out for the win with a moto win apiece. The overall went the way of Mustoe though as he won the second moto. Ryan Waggott would finish third.

Taylor Hammal rode a stormer in Moto1.

The series now moves into round 5 at the awesome Desert Martin circuit in Northern Ireland on the 30th June.
