Moto podium for Mewse at Mantova – Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee Team Report

Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee returned to full strength at round nine of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship on Sunday. The Grand Prix of Lombardia marked the return of both Bas Vaessen and Adam Sterry, who sat alongside Conrad Mewse (just re-signed until the end of 2022) underneath the awning.

Conrad Mewse endured a tricky first moto, where a chaotic first lap left him right at the very back. Climbing up from outside of the top 30 to 18th, on a track that most riders struggled to make passes on, was an impressive showing. The second moto was where he really shined though, as he used the power of his KTM 250 SX-F to round the first corner in second. Mewse quickly slotted into third and held that position is reasonable comfort until the chequered flag fell. Eighth overall was his final ranking on the day, which helped him to maintain ninth in the championship standings.

Bas Vaessen returned to action alongside Mewse in the MX2 class and was immediately luckless in the first moto. A crash on lap one left his bike too damaged to continue, so his attention quickly shifted to moto two. Starting outside of the top 20 left him facing an uphill climb, but he still clawed his way back to 15th to gain valuable points and some much-needed momentum. That result put him 19th overall on the day too.

The third rider beneath the Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee tent, Adam Sterry, experienced his best day in the premier category. A superb start in the first moto allowed him to experience the pace towards the front for the first time, so some brilliant experience was gained. 16th was his finsihing position. A similar result was gained in moto two, 17th to be exact, except he charged from the cusp of the top 20 in that encounter. 17th overall was where he was ranked at the end of the Grand Prix of Lombardia.

Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee will hit the same Mantova layout for the 10th round of the current term in just a couple of days – the Grand Prix of Citta di Mantova will take place on Wednesday.

Conrad Mewse: “It was a good day overall. I didn’t get a very good start in the first race and they put a lot of water down. The water went up underneath the tear offs, so I had to pull all of those on lap one and it meant that I couldn’t really get too close to people as I was coming through. I had a much better start in the second race and hung on for third for a lot of the race. It was nice to finish on a high, but hopefully we can bounce back on Wednesday and have two consistent rides. That is the only thing left now, to put together two good results. I am looking forward to Wednesday!”

Bas Vaessen: “Today was all about getting back into the groove. I missed a lot of races and was a little nervous before qualifying, so rode too tight and made too many mistakes. I actually had a good start in the first moto but crashed in the second corner and the bike was too banged up to continue. I had to pull out. My initial jump out of the gate was good in moto two, but I went into the first turn on the outside, which wasn’t great. I made passes but could not get further up than 15th. I’m looking forward to Wednesday to see if we can get some more points.”

Adam Sterry: “It was a pretty solid day today. I rode a bit tight but progressed as the day went on and actually felt pretty good at the end. I am happy to build from this, after not riding so much coming into this weekend and puncturing my lung only two weeks ago! I’m looking forward to Wednesday where I will try to improve on what happened today.”
